I am not sure I understand your question. Are you asking if obstacles can be included in the tests, allies, and enemies stage? Or are you asking if obstacles and tests are the same thing?

  1. Hey Ms.Jamieson, in Lord of the Rings, would you consider Gandalf as the mentor or the herald? I think he’s the herald but Im not quite sure he seems a lot like the mentor as well, could he be both????

    • Aya,

Use the notes that we took in class to determine which character serves as each archetype. I was very clear, several times, about characters serving as more than one archetype. I can’t give you the answer to this question, this is what you have to prove to me in your paper.

  2. In J.K. Rowling’s book, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” Harry does not directly refuse Hagrid’s call to go to Hogwarts. He, instead, tells Hagrid that the giant must’ve gotten the wrong person, and that he, Harry Potter, cannot possibly be a wizard. Would that qualify as the refusal of the call for this book? Or would it be when the Dursleys refused, saying that they wanted to “stamp it (Harry’s magic) out of him.” Can another person refuse the Hero’s call to adventure?

    • Zeinab,
The whole point of the paper is for you to analyze the movie through the lens of the hero’s journey and figure it out. I can’t give you the answer. Remember what we discussed in class though, that authors and film makers take the stages and modify them, which is why we as an audience are still captivated by the journey after thousands of years. Don’t take the stages too literally, and don’t over think it.
