DFT Attendance Reporting. AESOP and Evoucher

Attention DFT Members,

This is a reminder that it is the responsibility of each DFT member to report their absence in the AESOP system.  In some cases a secretary might put the absence in AESOP if a specific substitute is requested in advance.  However, it is still the responsibility of the DFT unit member ensure that the absence is reported and to verify accuracy in AESOP. Here is the link to the AESOP attendance website. https://www.frontlinek12.com/Products/Aesop.html

In addition, DFT members do not have permission to put FMLA into the system. That would need to be done by a school secretary or by Mr. David Hardoin in the Human Resources Department. The entry of FMLA can only be entered once all paperwork has been processed in the Human Resources Department. Mr. Seeterlin, the Director of Human Resources-Instructional, is responsible for approving all FMLA requests. DFT members can go into the AESOP system and verify their attendance reports.   Here is the link to the HR blog that has information on FMLA and resources for employees.   https://humanresources.dearbornschools.org/employee-leaves-fmla/

The Evoucher website provides detailed attendance data going back over a 2 year period.  This website receives information from AESOP but the updates are always two weeks behind because it is only updated in conjunction with payroll dates.  The evoucher website is where attendance information is taken from when HR builds the layoff and recall databases.  Here is the link to the Evoucher system.  It is also the location where you can download your pay stubs.  https://hrweb.resa.net/eEmployee/

Evaluation Committee Meeting from April 3rd and Evaluation Timeline Reminders

Hello Everyone,

I am posting this reminder regarding the deadlines for the Teacher Evaluation documents. Please remember that it is a joint responsibility of administrators and teachers to complete their portions of the year end evaluations.  For your convenience, here is a link to a memorandum that was previously sent out that lists all evaluation recommended timelines.  All year end evaluation documents must be submitted to HR by May 10th. https://humanresources.dearbornschools.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/103/2013/09/Document2.pdf

In addition, here is information from the district evaluation committee meeting.

The teacher evaluation committee meeting was held on April 3rd and the members present included. Gail Shenkman, Jill Chochol, Wyatt David, Linda Lazar, Rob Seeterlin, Andy Denison, Fatme Faraj, Hassane Jaafar, Chris Sipperley, Nicole Chubb, Scott Guthrie, and Glenn Maleyko.Listed below is important information from the committee.

We had a very productive evaluation committee meeting.  Here is a summary of what we discussed and the recommendations:

1.   We plan to move towards a specific weighted system for subsequent school years. However, we will not implement a specific weighted system for the current year 2013-14. We will take our time and study what other districts are doing. We have the support of the Superintendent, Cabinet and the Evaluation Committee.

2.  Questions have come up about measurements not being available. Starting last year when the timeline on evaluation deadlines was distributed, I specifically emphasized and communicated that measures should be selected where data is available. Choosing a goal where measures were not available was not the recommended model.  Everyone knew about the deadlines prior to developing goals. Multiple years of data can be used per the state legislation.

3.   The state has provided little or no direction with regards to weighting models or the development of effective growth models. However, we are still moving in the right direction with our model and plan to have more consistency with the measurements that we choose in the future.

4.   We have decided to give all teachers a highly effective rating on the district growth measurement percentage due to the fact that we were rated the 14th best school by Bridge magazine and we received a good rating with our district report card that included improvements in many areas.

5. There were some questions submitted by administrators and answers to those questions will be added to the FAQ sheet on the AYP blog.  We discussed them during the meeting.

6.  Dr. Klee is leading a process via the district assessment committee where we will analyze our district assessments and make recommendations for reducing assessments and consolidating our resources so that we develop more valid and reliable growth measures.

7. If the state ratifies bills calling for changes to the evaluation process in Michigan the committee will get together immediately to formulate a recommended plan of action.

Thank you.

Last Week To Nominate Your Favorite Teacher Today!

Friday, April 11, 2014 is the last day to nominate your favorite Dearborn Public Schools teacher to be selected as the 2013-14 Alberta Muirhead Teacher of the Year.  Entry forms can be filled out on-line at https://dearbornschools.org/toy  or can be downloaded at the same website, can be picked up at any Dearborn public school and the district’s Administration Office, 18700 Audette

“We want to make the nomination process as simple as possible because we want to encourage all students to nominate their favorite teachers,” said Chamber Education Committee Chair Stefanie Stover.

Hard-copy nomination forms can be dropped off or mailed to the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce, 22100 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn, MI  48124, or fax to (313) 584-9818. Adults may assist students when necessary but no more than two teachers can be nominated per student.

Students can nominate new or veteran teachers whom they feel have made outstanding contributions to the teaching profession.  Preschool through fifth-grade students are asked to describe how their teacher has created a classroom where learning is positive and fun.  Middle school students (grades 6-8) will need to explain how their teacher connects classroom learning with everyday life. Students in high school must describe how their teacher is preparing them to be successful beyond high school. Applications will be assessed on quality of the nomination, not on the number received. Award judges are members of the Dearborn Chamber Education Committee and are not provided with the teachers’ names.

One winner from pre-K through 2nd grade, 3rd-5th grade, middle, and high school will be announced at a special ceremony, Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center. The Alberta Muirhead Teacher of the Year Award is sponsored by the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce.

Teachers selected to receive the Teacher of Year Award are being recognized as positive role models who consistently provide unique, productive, positive classroom experiences. Teachers selected receive a $1,000 cash prize, a plaque commemorating their achievement, and will be part of a select group of Dearborn teachers who have been recognized by the community for their dedication and passion for teaching.

“The teachers in our classrooms are true professionals, dedicated to their craft and to the academic success of their students. This award is a great way for our students to honor and thank their teachers,” commented Dearborn Public Schools Superintendent Mr. Brian Whiston.

Bills that are currently being debated in Lansing. Teacher and Administrator Evaluations

Summary of new Teacher and Administrator Evaluation bills

Administrators (HB 5224):

  • Begins in 2014-15
  • Will have two components; student growth and “practice”
  • For the first 3 years, 25% of the evaluation must be based on student growth and in 2017-18 student growth will be 50% of the evaluation
  • Student growth is determined by the “aggregate data that is used in teacher annual evaluations”
  • 4 rating categories: highly effective, effective, minimally effective, or ineffective
  • If rated minimally effective or ineffective, an improvement plan must be implemented. If ineffective for 3 consecutive years, dismissal is mandated.
  • If rated highly effective for 3 consecutive years, ok to evaluate every other year.
  • PRACTICE component consists of: 1) how well you evaluate others, 2) progress on the school improvement plan, 3) pupil attendance

Teacher (HB 5223):

  • Will have 2 components; student growth and “practice”
  • Begins in 2014-15 and until the 2016-17 school year, 25% of the evaluation must be based on student growth, after that, it moves to 50%
  • The student growth instrument must be determined by MDE no later than 3/1/14. The bill lists all the required components of that instrument
  • Each teacher must be evaluated twice – one unscheduled – one by an administrator
  • If rated ineffective for 3 consecutive years, teacher must be dismissed – as long as the exact same instrument was used
  • The MCEE moves to the Department of Technology Management and Budget. Once the evaluation instrument as described in this bill is fully implemented, the MCEE will be disbanded
  • For teachers in core content areas where growth data is available on state mandated student assessment, 40% of their evaluation is based on this data. For non-core and special education teachers the same 40% applies, but the assessment may differ and be a locally developed one.
  • Each local board determines the percentage weight of these 3 components of student growth: state assessments, local assessments and school level growth (but that component cannot be more than 10%)
  • PRACTICE component:  classroom observations using one of the 4 models (Danielson, Marzano, Thoughtful Classroom or 5 Dimensions) or a district developed one makes up 80% of the “practice” category
  • The other 20% of the evaluation is based on leadership, attendance, contributions, school improvement, peer input, parent/student input. Districts are free to use any of these factors
  • All evaluators must be trained
  • Annually, districts are to send copies of teacher evaluation data to  the state
  • Beginning  7/1/15, no professional teacher certificate may be issued unless the teacher has been rated effective or highly effective for 3 consecutive years or, if these evaluations are not consecutive, a recommendation for issuance must come from the chief school administrator in that district
