Scholarship from WSU

This is from Maura Sedgemansedgemm@dearbornschools.org

Help me get the word out to new teachers who want to pursue a Master’s degree in ESL/BBE in the fall–WSU is offering a $2500 scholarship to the first 12 people who sign up for a master’s in ESL and join the Melvindale/Crestwood cohort (classes held in Melvindale).  I have attached the announcement.  This would really help new hires.

From Elizabeth Hopkins, the program coordinator at WSU:
Also, here is a handout detailing a new scholarship offering for any new students accepted into the fall 2015 ESL/BBE Masters degree program, who would like to participate in the new Melvindale/Crestwood cohort.  $2500.00 in the first year of classes is a very generous offer, and I would encourage all who qualify to hop on board.  Dearborn teachers can participate in the program as long as they commit to taking one class in each of the three semesters (fall, winter, and spring) of the 2015-16 academic year in Melvindale.  This grant-driven scholarship is meant to generate new cohort partnerships around metropolitan Detroit. I will also be sending it out to other districts in Wayne County.

Happy Mother’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day to All the Moms out there. Thank you for all that you do to support families. We hope that you had a great day.

Sincerely,  the Staff and Student Services Administrators and Faculty.

Substitutes via PESG and the Secretary Committee

We continue to meet with PESG in order to increase the subsitute fill rate and quality. Both the ADSA and DFT unions have participated in the meetings.  We want to let everyone know that there is a process in place to maintain the substitute quality in the schools. However, we know that same quality of instruction will not take place when we have a substitute vs. the full time teacher.  It is also a reality that there is a substitute shortage across the state and the number of students going into the field of education has been reduced.  We hope that Lansing will soon pass legislation to allow us to hire retired teachers as subsitutes.

It is important for everyone to be aware that if there is a problem with a subsitute the employee should report the issue to the building administration. Administration will make a decision and may contact Human Resources to remove the sub from the building. If the same subsitute has issues in multiple buildings then we would remove from the district altogether.

Secretary Committee.

The secretary committee has met two times this year. We are looking at staffing allocation recommendations, modifying testing procedures, and addressing professional development needs. We will soon be sending out a survey to all clerical staff in the school district. The committee consists of representatives from Building Administration, central office, secondary and elementary clerical staff and the DFSE union.

Committee members include: Heyam Alcodray, Ruth Bankhead, Rene Ziaja, Sharon Korhonen, Shelley Dzingle, Fatme Faraj, Kristin Waddell, Marcella Carlesimo, Pam DeNeen, Tery Moslimani, Chuck Baughman, Andrew Denison, and Glenn Maleyko.

Specialty Rubrics via the Danielson Model

In addition to information sent on the last post we are also purchasing the rights to ancillary staff rubrics via the Danielson model. This includes but is not limited to the following. Counselors, special education, psychologists, nurses, social workers, media specialists. Etc.  Thank you to Nicole Chubb and Michael Shelton for initiating a process via the teacher evaluation committee to create, recommend and implement specialty rubrics.

Teachscape Training and the Danielson 2013 rubric

Hello Everyone,
As previously posted and sent out via email, we are moving to the Teachscape model and Danielson 2013 rubric for teacher evaluations. The shared document that was sent out via a google shared email provides a full example of the 2013 rubric that we will use next year. In addition, we have been busy planning for the conversion to Teachscape/Danielson web based evaluation tool for the 2015-16 school year.

Here is the tentative plan:

On August 25th or 26th all administrators will be trained on the Teachscape Reflect Evaluation system. All administrators have already been trained (or for the new administrators they are in the process of being trained)on the Teachscape evaluation Focus module. This includes two 3 hour exams that must be passed which is in addition to hours of on-line training.

On September 3rd administrators will choose 1 to 2 teachers per building that will be trained in Teachscape. They will then implement a trainer of trainer’s model and go back to their buildings to train all faculty on the new system. This will be done during faculty meetings or late start meetings. On October 16th some specific time will be allocated for training.

In addition, here is the link to a recent blog post regarding the 5% district growth percentage.https://humanresources.dearbornschools.org/2015/04/23/5-district-growth-for-teacher-evaluations/

5% District Growth for Teacher Evaluations

The state has provided little or no direction with regards to weighting models or the development of effective growth models. However, we are still moving in the right direction with our model that includes NWEA. Since the MStep Testing is new we will need to integrate that in the future but there is no way to fairly include state assessments at this point in time.

Thus we have decided to give all teachers a highly effective rating on the district growth (5%) measurement percentage due to the fact that we were rated by Bridge magazine as a top school district and we received a good rating with our district report card that included improvements in many areas.
