Last Green Team Meeting Monday, June 2nd

Last Green Team Meeting Monday, June 2nd

Monday June 2nd we will be having our last Green Team meeting of the year. We will be having an end of the year celebration. Please send in a treat to pass. We are also going to make bean bag chair from recycled products again for those who didn’t get to make one last time.

  • We need old sheets and bags of shredded paper.
  • If you have a shredder at home please bring in bags of shredded paper.
  • If you have old sheets at home that you would be willing to donate please send them in Friday or Monday.

Please respond to the post so I know how many students need sheets for Monday.  I will buy some sheets at the resale shop over the weekend if you don’t have a sheet to donate.  Just let me know if you need one.

Thank you to everyone who helped with the Green Team this year. We have exciting plans for next year. I hope everyone has a wonderful summer and I look forward to seeing everyone next year. If your student is moving up to a new school, best wishes and good luck!

Thanks, Katie Keebler

Green Team Meeting Monday 3:35-4:30

Dear Parents,

The Green Team will be meeting again on Monday, March 3rd after school.

Please send in Cheerios with your students.  We will thread them on strings for the birds to eat.

We have ordered worms to start our worm composer that was supposed to arrive by today, but they did not.  If our worms arrive by Monday and are not frozen we will set up the worm composter on Monday.

If not, we will be planting and discussing soy beans as an alternative energy and food sources.

Our endangered animal kits have arrived so we will be discussing those on Monday also.

Have a great weekend!  See you all Monday,

Mrs. Katie Keebler

Green Team meeting 1/27 3:35-4:30

Dear Green Team parents,

Since we missed our Green Team meeting on 1/6 due to a snow day and we will not have school on the 3rd Monday 1/20, I have decided to reschedule our meeting for the 4th Monday 1/27.  During this meeting we will be meeting with Dr. Saarinen from U of M Dearborn and some of her students to work on some special projects for our green house.

The green team decided to save a cougar and one other animal with the extra money.  We will be voting on the extra animal so if you or your child have a preference please visit the WWF and choose the animal you would like to suggest.  Please email or reply to this post to let me know your animal.  Here is their website.

Green Bake Sale

Hello Everyone,

Our Green Team bake sale to help the cougar was a great success!  We earned almost $150 ($149.61),  more than enough money to help the cougar.  We will discuss at our next meeting what we will do with our extra earnings.  We can help another animal or put the money toward one of our other Green Team projects we have planned for this year.

Thank you to everyone for contritbuting such yummy treats!  And a big thank you to all that parents that helped supervise the sale and let their kids stay after school to sell the extra items.

I am very proud of this group.  They really did a great job planning and selling.

We have started preparing a Green Team bulletin board in the back hallway.  We need more articles about current environmental concerns and other green issues.  Please have your student pick a green topic to research and write a short article for the board.  Don’t forget to include some interesting pictures!

Be proud of your amazing kids!

Helpers and baked goods needed for Friday’s bake sale

Hi Everyone,

We still need one or two parents for adult supervision at the bake sale on Friday.  The kids will do most of the work, you just need to make sure everything goes smoothly and help if they don’t know how to do something.  If you are able to stay for part or the whole time please let me know. keeblek@dearbornschools.org

I wanted to remind everyone to please bring in baked goods or treats on Friday morning.  The kids decided to store the food on the shelf above the hooks outside the cafeteria until the sale.

We are also in need of a cash box to keep the money in the day of the sale.  If anyone has one that we could borrow, please let me know right away.

Several students are researching different environmental concerns.   They will be writing articles to post on our new Green Team bulletin board by the back door of the school.  We will change the bulletin board as soon as we have enough articles to post.

Thanks,

Katie Keebler

Meeting reminder and help needed

To all Green Team families;

This letter is to remind you that the Green Team will be meeting tomorrow after school until 4:30.    The Green School is raising money to save the endangered animal the cougar by having a bake sale.  This also a reminder that we are having a bake sale this Friday, December 6th at lunch time 10:40-12:30.  We hope to get one donation from each Green School family.    It would be very helpful to have one or two adults helping the children with the sale.  If you are able to stay some or part of the time please email me right away to let me know.  My email is keeblek@dearbornschools.org.

We also want to tell you about two important projects the Green School Committee needs your help with: recycling and re-purposing.  This year we are striving to raise our level of green school and to teach our students even more ways to protect our earth.  Last year we started with the composting food waste program and we will continue this program, expanding it into classrooms in addition to the cafeteria.

One of the changes we are making is we are collecting recycling materials as well this year.  There is a garbage bag in the cafeteria and one in the staff lounge in which you may place any of your recyclable materials.  Students are being encouraged by their teachers to place recycling materials in bins in their classrooms.

Various staff members have agreed to take home the recyclable materials and place in their containers for the city to pick up.  If you are available to help with this endeavor we would greatly appreciate it.  In addition, if we could have some families willing to have their children bring them home we would greatly appreciate it.

This is a good time to teach a lesson on sustainability, reducing waste and the science of recycling to your students and children as well.  It would be awesome if we could spark an interest in our children that aids in the reduction of waste.  One person can make a difference; imagine the difference our school community can make.

If you have any questions or are willing to have your child bring home some recycling materials please email me with your child’s name and his or her teacher’s name at keeblek@dearbornschools.org or send in a note with your child his or her teacher.  We are hoping to get a schedule together to spread out the burden.

In addition to our composting and recycling programs this year, the green school committee is taking on a re-purposing project.  We have many students who have clothes that no longer fit and are still in good condition.  We are asking Howe staff and families to donate your slightly used clothes to our school.  Some of our classrooms will launder, fold, sort and categorize the clothes to be used for other students in the school.  We will take clothing items, coats, hats, scarves, gloves and blankets at this time.  Our hope is to reduce waste while helping out our Howe families and community at the same time.  Once clothing items are categorized we will update families and staff via the Blog as to what items we have available.  If we have an overflow of items then we will donate to a nearby shelter.

If you have any questions or are willing to donate items please email Kim Jenkins and we can arrange for the items to be stored here at Howe. Her email address is jenkink@dearbornschools.org or send in a note with your child to his or her teacher.

Thank you so much,

Your Green School Committee
