Howe Green Team

This is not our regular meeting week, but since we had all our work erased last week I feel we need to meet to get our presentation completed.  Please make sure you share any Google slides that are completed with me.

Don’t forget – the Logo Contest drawings are due on Tuesday also.

As part of the process to become a Green School the Green Team is creating a Google Slide Photo presentation of our activities this year.  We worked hard on this at the Green Team meeting this week and just as we were finishing someone deleted everyone’s work.   I have tried several times to restore a previous version and newest version is from the day before.

In order to prevent this from happening again I need each person to create a separate Google slide show for their topic and I will merge them all together after they are created.   This presentation is due before March 1st and the Green team will not be meeting again until March 6th, due to the Winter Break.   Please share your presentation to me at keeblek@dearbornschools.org by February 16th so I will have time to merge them all together and send it to the Wayne County Green School Committee.  Here is a link to all the photos I have from this year Green Team Photos and Videos.  Please use this link not the one in the previous post.

The Green Team also voted to enter the Green School Logo contest.   Each student should draw a logo-  Here are the details – County-Specific Green Schools Logo Design.  Submit a student-created (non computer generated) logo design which represents Wayne
County’s Green Schools program. This logo may be used to promote the Green Schools program during the following school year included on promotional items, website, etc.(limit of 3 designs per school) Entries are due March 1 st .  Please submit your design by February 14th and we will vote for the top three to be submitted.

Dear Green Team and Parents,

As part of becoming a Green School we will be working on the following project:

County-Specific Green Schools Presentation.
Submit a student-created presentation (video, slide or other presentation program) which informs the public about the Michigan Green Schools Program in your county. This presentation may be used at workshops and/or on the county’s website to educate about the
program.

Students will put the pictures in a Google Slide presentation.  Add a description about the activity we did and why.

Feel free to change the colors, and fonts.  Add slides as needed.  Make it interested, remember it is like an advertisement for Green Team.  Show people it is fun and exciting.  I am still working on adding pictures.  If any parents have pictures please share them with us.  The presentation is due by March 1st which leaves us only 1 Green Team meeting left to complete it, that is why we will need to do some of the work at home and polish it up at our next meeting on 2-6-18.   I look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with.

Green Team Meeting this week on Tuesday 1/16 from 3:35-5:00.

We will be having a field trip to the Michael Berry side of the school to see the cars built by the high school students and learn about fuel efficiency.  We will finish up in Mrs. Keebler’s classroom.

The Green Team raise $127 at our sale in sales and donations!  With the other fundraisers we have done this year we have earned $300 this year.  This is enough to buy 1 hand dryer for the bathrooms.  Mrs. Fournier has offered to by the other hand dryer.

We are now almost out of money and we will continue to fund raise for our activities the rest of the year.

There are a few baked goods and lots of crayons left over.  I will be selling them off the cart at dismissal today.

Volunteers and students needed to help run the Green Team Pizza/Bake/Crandle/Crayon Sale today.

Bake goods and pizzas needed.  Christian thought his dad could bring pizza but he is working today and is unable.  Anyone who can bring cheese pizza only would be great!

Volunteers needed for set up and clean up.  Please arrive by 3:15 to set up the sale.

Green Team Project – The green team has started to become aware of the amount of waste in our school.   We weight the bathroom trash and we make about 10 pounds of trash in one day in the two bathrooms.  That is 50 pounds a week, 200 pounds a month and 2000 pounds a year.  We have decided to help eliminate paper waste.  We are going to try to raise enough money to buy hand dryers for each of the bathrooms.  They are $300 each so we will need to raise $600.

Meeting on Tuesday – We will be making candles and molded crayons.   We will be melting crayons and pouring them in molds that I bought for candles and shapes for crayons.   I would like to sell these after school on Wednesday.

Parent Volunteers Needed – Does anyone who has a heat source like a hot plate or  slow cooker that they could bring in to help melt the wax.  We will also be using the 2 microwaves.

Bake Sale/Pizza/Candle and Crayon sale on Wednesday after school – Please send donation of baked good and cheese pizza on Wednesday.  Volunteers needed to help with the sale.

Waste Free Lunch – We weighted the cafeteria garbage last week and we made 54 pounds of garage in one day of lunch, that is 270 pounds of garbage in one week,  1080 lbs of garbage in one month and 10, 800 lbs of garbage just from lunch in one year.    Please to provide a completely wastefree lunch for your child,  encourage your freinds to do the same.

We will be meeting on 12/5 from 3:40-5:00.  Please remind students to bring the alternative energy projects.  We will be recording videos of their presentations.

As part of the activities to become a Green School -“Students research and report the alternative energy, renewable fuels or specialized energy-efficient technology in school operations.”  We watched the following video and student choose one of the 10 topics to research and report on.  Each student or team needs to research their topic and come up with a way to report on it – paper, poster board, diorama, video, or your choice.  I would like to have these completed by our next Green Team meeting on December 5th.  I would like to display these on our Green Team board in the hall and do a video of each presentation to attach to the display with a QR Code.  In case they forgot their topic –  Here are the topics that each student chose.  There are a few untaken if you would like to do a second report or switch topics please let me know.
