I hope everyone had an enjoyable weekend 🙂 Hard to believe we’re beginning week 4 of 2nd grade, wow! It was so nice to meet so many of you at Open House. I also had former students and parents stop by to say hello which I absolutely love!

1/2 Day this Friday September 20.

NWEA math testing will be Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Please make sure your child is at school on time because we start testing first thing.

Here is a summary of what we’ll be doing this coming week:

In our Reading/ELA time, we’re continuing learning new routines for our new program. We’re discovering the differences between fiction and non fiction books, developing our stamina for reading for longer periods of time, while I’m assessing each student to see what their instructional reading level is. We are developing our listening skills by listening to a story read aloud, discussing with a partner, and developing our writing skills by writing about the story and any connections or thoughts we have. Our phonics skills are being reviewed daily also. No spelling words yet. Those will be coming as we getting further into the program.

We began a new Math unit–measurement. We begin with centimeter cubes then will use rulers this week. Students will be measuring objects as well as pictures in their math books and on homework pages. They’ll also be expected to figure out how much longer or shorter one object is than another.

Learning about our Community is the focus all year long of our Social Studies curriculum. We’ve been talking about things in our community as well as in other communities. Learning which are natural/physical characteristics and those that are human/man made ones. This is where the many experiences you and your family do together helps your child learn.

We’ve begun our Science unit–Matter. We’ll be learning about how understanding properties help us use materials to solve problems.

If you weren’t able to make it to Open House, I do have open slots to sign you up for conferences that will be in November. If you already know a day that works for you, please email me and I’ll see what I can do.

Enjoy your week!
