tonight’s homeowork

I introduced subtraction with trading today. If it’s too confusing for your child and they are too frustrated, just let it be and don’t complete it. Just return tomorrow unfinished.

The goal is 3 digit subtraction without trading (borrowing). They understood that goal so I moved onto the trading (borrowing).

Field trip tomorrow :)

Just a quick reminder that tomorrow is our trip to the Cranbrook Science Museum. Have your children wear comfortable shoes for walking around in all day. Healthy lunch needed because no food can be bought there. Also, please no money for the gift shop–we won’t have time for that.

No Spelling this week due to the short week.

We’re starting our last writing unit of the year. Narrative–story writing.

We’re done with NWEA testing and I’m almost done with reading assessments. 1 more math test next week plus the last 3 min. computation test.

Library books due this week so please send any in that are at home.

I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend with your families and friends 🙂

Monday May 21, 2018

We’ll finish up unit 10 in math and begin our last unit. It’s focus will be on subtraction strategies for 2 and 3 digit numbers.

We’ll learn about a community issue using a fiction book and how the community solved the problem. This relates to our writing as well.

We’re stating our opinion in writing this week and supporting our choice with reasons. about a community problem.

Comparing and contrasting stories about the same topic will be the last focus for our reading strategies.

A note will come home from the PTA about a holiday sale.

Enjoy the week 🙂

Monday May 14, 2018

Late Start Wednesday May 16. School begins at 9:35

I will update if I hear about any changes to the PTA carnival tonight. 5:00-6:30

Thank you to those who sent in the field trip permission and money. I still need 1 more approved parent to go with us. If you can, it will be greatly appreciated.

2nd grade NWEA testing begins tomorrow through Friday. We will be taking the Reading and Math tests again but 1/2 of each test each day to break it up. Testing will be in the morning.

The April PBIS positive behavior celebration will be tomorrow last thing in the day. It will be an ice cream reward so no toys or electronics from home this time.

This week’s Spelling words are singular/plurals with spelling changes: woman, women, goose, geese, mouse. Dolch words: shall, us, seven, far, cut

We’re continuing stating facts learned from 2 different types of informational articles, 1 book and 1 magazine type article. We’re comparing and contrasting what was learned in each.

We’ll be revisiting Opinion writing for the next couple of weeks and focusing on a community issue we’re studying in Social Studies. After discussing the issue as a class, students have to take a stand on the issue and writing opinions with appropriate reasons to support their opinion.

Math skills this week are in writing explain seeing a number in base 10 and what is shows or not. (Explain a mistake a student makes in writing the number wrong). I’m also introducing making change for $1.00. I’m teaching it by counting up to $1.00 not subtracting from $1.00. (That will come in 3rd with borrowing from the 0s)  For example, if something cost 70c, how much change will you get back from $1.00.  Count up from 70 by 10s to 100 so the answer is 30 cents.

Enjoy the week!
