Kids Heart Challenge

Greeting Flyers Family,

I would like to update you regarding our Kids Heart Challenge that ended on March 1st.   With your support we have raised $10,850.55 for the American Heart Association this year. Amazing work!

Even though our donation window is closed for this school year, we still have one more week to sign up online and take the challenge for a stronger and healthier life.  I am encouraging all of our students to “Take the Challenge”, choose water over sugary drinks, exercise for 60 minutes daily or do a kind deed daily.  It is free to sign up, and students will receive a glow in the dark wristband for their dedication to a healthy lifestyle.  If we can get 50% of our student population here at Lindbergh to Take the Challenge, we will be able to receive an additional $500 to purchase new PE equipment for the students to enjoy!  We are only 5 students away!  The deadline to register and/or raise donations for the American Heart Association is Friday, March 8th.  Let’s all get healthier together!

Jump online, take the Challenge and be a Heart Hero!

Martian Kids Marathon

Martian Kids Marathon

Lindbergh School is participating in the Martian Kids Marathon at Dearborn’s Ford Field on Saturday, April 13th – at 12:00pm (Blue Wave).

This is a 1.2 mile Fun run, so every child is welcome to join for a discounted fee of $20 until March 10th. The race entry will get you a race tee-shirt, a Marathon finisher’s medal and post-race food. The entire registration process is online; you will not need to send anything to school.

Here is how to register. Go to:  https://runningfitevents.redpodium.com/2019-martian-invasion-of-races and select:  “I am here to register as a group leader or group participant”. Then select team name “Lindbergh Elementary”.  Password: flyers2019.

Prior to the Race: Take the Challenge:  A Marathon is 26.2 miles, so the kids will run 25 miles before the race and finish the last 1.2 on race day.  Each child is encouraged to log 25 miles from now until race day and they can do this by participating in any activities such as playing basketball, running, soccer, jumping rope, soccer, dance, karate etc. For every 30 minutes of the activity you can receive  1 mile on your log book (on the back of this flyer).  So if you play soccer for 1 hour you can log 2 miles on your running log.  Although the log book is optional, I highly encourage it to teach healthy habits!

Before Race Day: I pass out the t-shirts on Friday, April 12th at school for those registered.

On Race Day: Please arrive at least 30 minutes before the start time with their log books (if completed). I will be at the race as well, but you will be required to stay with your child before, during and after the race. Cheer on your child as they cross the finish line and complete the Marathon!

If any adults in the Lindbergh Community would like to run the 5k to 26.2 marathon you can also sign up and use the 20% off discount code “SCHOOLGROUP19” (good until March 10th).

This Week in PE

Greetings Flyers Family,

This week in PE our Y5’s-2nd Grade students are working on striking and catching balloons with different parts of our body at high and low levels!  Students will also work on their balancing skills while  we play pancake tag where everyone is it!  For our 3rd-5th grade students we are finishing up our jump rope unit with a test this week.  Our students have worked really hard over the past several weeks and have had so much growth from where we started just a few short weeks ago.  I’m so proud of them!  The test will measure how many turns of the rope under their feet in the time specific time allotted for his/her grade (3rd = 1 minute, 4th = 2 minutes, 5th = 3 minutes),

Believe it or not….. It’s taken three weeks to get started due to our Michigan winter, but we’re going to be able to have the first Team Sports class today after school for those on the roster in 2nd/3rd grade.  I ask that if you have your child enrolled in the club that you meet us in the cafeteria at 4:45pm for dismissal.  Thank you!

As always, thank you for your continued support,

Mr. Harvey

Kids Heart Challenge

Greetings Flyers Family,

We are off to an AMAZING start this year raising raising donations for the American Heart Association!  Students can collect donations one of two ways; registering online with the app or with the purple envelope that went home this week with the students.
Because of the overwhelming response already, I ask that students only turn in their envelope when they are finished collecting their donation on their PE days with the money in their purple envelope.  This way, I can assure that each child has received the necessary prizes they have earned and thank them for their assistance in helping out with this amazing program. If your child has loose money/checks to turn in, I ask that they keep it in their Kids Heart Challenge envelope until they are finished collecting and ready to turn it in during PE class  The deadline for the donations is Friday, February 15th.  Extra envelopes are in the office as well as when the students come to class.
Additionally, I encourage all students to register online for their FREE glow in the dark wristband and your chance at a $25 gift card and a free PE day for the entire class! The class with the most online registrations will claim the prize! Registration is easy, please go to heart.org/KidsHeartChallenge, search the school and the rest is easy.  Another way to register is by downloading the Kids Heart Challenge mobile app and it will walk you through the necessary steps to complete the registration.
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.  As always, thank you for your support,
Mr. Harvey

This Week in P.E.

This week in P.E. our Y5’s-2nd graders will move into a basketball unit where our primary focus this week will be on control with the basketball and hand dribbling.  Students will build confidence through a series of progressions such as slaps, taps and wraps as well as dribbling and using an arm guard (shielding the ball with opposite arm) building all the fundamental skills used in a basketball game.

Our 3rd-5th grade primary focus this week will be on passing and shooting.  Students will learn and practice the techniques used in a bounce pass and chest pass (Bend, Extend, Release) and understand situations they would use each type of pass during a game situation.  Additionally, we will learn about B.E.E.F.!  Balance (body positioning), Elbow (shooting elbow in), Eyes (looking at the back of the rim) and Follow-through (extension of the shooting hand and a flick of the wrist aka the hand in the cookie jar).

News and Notes:

  • With the peak of winter fast approaching, I would like give a friendly reminder that athletic shoes and comfortable clothing are necessary in order to keep kids active, engaged, safe, learning and consistently improving their motor skills.  I appreciate your time and assistance as we work together to prepare physically literate and active kids!
  • If your child is participating in the November Planks-Giving Challenge, please have your student turn the signed calendar into the main office the week of December 3rd for their name on the tree in the gym!
  • The next fitness calendar for the month of December will be distributed to students by the end of the week.

Helping kids stay fit,

Mr. Harvey
