Focus For The Week Of November 13, 2017

Our second graders will be working and practicing these skills this week:

 

Reading; Students will identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe. They will learn to compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same topic.

Writing:   Students will choose a topic of interest like:  community helpers; weather; animals; biographies; insects or mammals. They will work on finding and researching their topic and including it in their writing.

Math:  Students will learn to tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m.

Social Studies:  Students will continue learning about maps and map symbols.  They will learn about different forms of transportation and how this relates to school and home.

Science:  Students will investigate soil by learning how to make it and discovering how it is made.

Canned Food Drive

Miller Elementary is having a canned food drive for the month of November. Please send in cans or boxes of food. Do  not send any perishable items. All of the canned food will be donated to families in need to help make their Thanksgiving special.

Focus for the week of November 6-10

Students will be focusing on the following areas this week:

Reading:  Students will learn to identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text.  They will also identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe.

Writing:  Students will continue to work on informational writing using research.

Math:  Students will be able to explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations.

Science:  Students will learn how the structure, properties, and interactions of matter work together by writing examples of things that can be made with rocks.

Social Studies: Students will understand that communities are divided into places or areas where people work, play, shop, and live by organizing the map of Treeville into parts.

Field Trip

Our field trip to see Seussical is coming up on Wednesday, November 15th.  We are so excited to see Jumana in the play, she plays a Who! It is only a half-day trip. Please make sure that you sign and return the permission slip and $3 by Thursday, November 9th. If you plan on being a chaperone, please send in $5 for yourself as well. We are all very excited about this trip!
