FOCUS FOR THE WEEK

Our second grade students will be working on:

Reading:   Students will learn to explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.

Writing:   Students will write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section. They will also with guidance and support from adults and peers, focus on a topic and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing.”

Math:  Students will learn to recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a gibe number of equal faces. Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.  They will also fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.2 By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.

Science:  Students will plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of liquids by their observable properties.

Social Studies:  Students will be learning to understand the difference between a need and a want and will list items that are a need or want.  They will also be learning about goods and services and how they are different from each other.

After School Tutoring

We will have after school tutoring tomorrow, January 31st. Wednesday is not our usual day but this is will be our make-up day. Last Thursday we canceled tutoring because of Math Night, so it is rescheduled for tomorrow. Please remember that your child needs to be picked up by 4:30.

Field Trip Tomorrow!

Our field trip to Lego Land is tomorrow, January 31st. Please pack a lunch for your child and include a drink as well, remember no glass. Also, we are peanut free so please do not send anything that contains peanuts. If you are a chaperone please be in our classroom by 8:50 so we can leave as soon as the bus arrives.

Social Studies Test

Our Unit 3 Social Studies test will be this Thursday and Friday. Part of the test will be online(multiple choice ) and the other part will be written responses. Please help your child study for the test by using the study guide. We are focusing on diversity, patriotism, government, laws, services the government provides, and symbols of the U.S. (eagle, flag). They will have two nights to study since this is a hard test with lots of concepts.

NWEA TESTING TOMORROW

Your child will be NWEA testing in math tomorrow. Please make sure your child goes to bed by 9:00 tonight so he/she gets a good night’s sleep and encourage eating a healthy breakfast in the morning. Also, remind your child to listen to the question carefully before answering. They will be able to use scrap paper to work out problems as well.
