Focus for the Week of January 22, 2019
This week our second grade students will be working on:
Reading: Students will learn to use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.
Math: Students will explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations. They will add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds. They will use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Writing: Students will write opinion texts in which they introduce a topic, use reasons and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.
Science: Students will continue to learn about the structures of matter and the surfaces of the earth as it relates to solid matter. They will learn about defining and delimiting engineering problems and developing possible solutions. Students will work on optimizing the design solution
Social Studies: Students will explain why people form governments. They will use examples to describe how local government affects the lives of its citizens. Students will identify services commonly provided by local governments (e.g., police, fire departments, schools, libraries, parks).
