Focus for the Week of February 25-March 1st
This week our second grade students will be learning:
Reading: Students will learn to recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral.
Math: Students will learn to add up to four two-digit numbers using strategies based on place value and properties of operations.
2.NBT.B.7-Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.They will mentally add 10 or 100 to a given number 100-900, and mentally subtract 10 or 100 from a given number 100-900.Students will explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations.1
Writing: Students will write opinion texts in which they introduce a topic, use reasons and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.
Science: Students will continue to learn about the structures of matter and the surfaces of the earth as it relates to liquids. They will learn about defining and delimiting engineering problems and developing possible solutions. Students will work on optimizing the design solution. Students will look at images in order to make connections between the text and picture or image.
Social Studies: Students will explain why people form governments. They will use examples to describe how local government affects the lives of its citizens. Students will identify services commonly provided by local governments (e.g., police, fire departments, schools, libraries, parks).
