Weekly Newsletter Week of March 19th

This week is the beginning of the fourth and final quarter of the year.  Report cards will be coming home this week.  I will be meeting with some of you on Thursday for conferences.  Here is the objectives for this week:Reading:  RL 4.7 – Make connections between the text of a story or drama and a visual or oral presentation of the text, identifying where each version reflects specific descriptions and directions in the text.RL 4.9 Compare and contrast the treatment of similar themes and topics (e.g. opposition of good and evil) and patterns of events (e.g. the quest) in stories, myths, and traditional literature from different cultures.

Writing: W.4.1
Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.
a. Introduce a topic or text clearly, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure in which related ideas are grouped to support the writer’s purpose.
b. Provide reasons that are supported by facts and details.
c. Link opinion and reasons using words and phrases (e.g. for instance, in order to, in addition).
d. Provide a concluding statement or section related to the opinion presented.

Math:  4.NF.6 Use decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100. For example, rewrite 0.62 as 62/100; describe a length as 0.62 meters; locate 0.62 on a number line diagram.
Ability to use decimal notation for fraction with 10 or 100 as the denominator.  

  • We will be taking our Math test for Unit 7 by the end of this week.

Science:   We are starting our life science unit.

Social studies: We are starting our unit 6- Rights and Responsibilities as Citizens.

Academic Vocabulary:

  • Visual Presentation is a text that is presented in pictures, illustrations, an electronic and new-age media (ex. internet) 
  • Opposing is the act of resisting or combating 
  • Theme refers to the central meaning, message, or idea in a literary text that the author wants to communicate. Theme is never stated explicitly, but must be inferred by the reader
  • ancient –  belonging to the very distant past and no longer in existence-
  • myth – traditional story involving supernatural beings or events.

Spelling words:

Group 2:

stare,  share, dare, care, chair, pair, rare,  bare, fair, hair , always gave, those, use, fast
