Our New Class Pet!
Here is a photo of our new class pet, a praying mantis. The kids are going to get to name it!
Parent-Teacher Conferences
If you didn’t get a chance to sign up for parent-teacher conferences at Open House, the schedule is up on the Parent Info page. Leave me a comment and let me know which open time works best for you. Time slots are given on a first-come, first-served basis. If there are no times available that will fit your needs, please email me and let me know what works. I will try my best to accommodate you. Thanks!
Today’s Homework
You can find today’s homework on the Assignments page, just like always! 🙂
Reflection for September 28, 2011
Late start days always go by in a blink of an eye, and today was no different! We spent a good chunk of our morning discussing census and how to interpret data based upon the 1790 census. There is some math homework based upon this information, and all students were advised to bring their SRB (Student Reference Book) home to complete their assignment. We also reviewed the concept of equivalent fractions. I encourage students to visit my blog for some practice with this topic.
As you know, the MEAP is bearing down on us, and we have a program in place to help your child brush up on his/her skills! It is Study Island, a web-based computer program available for home use. I encourage students to work on the 4th grade standards that they have not yet completed in preparation. Every student has a username and password. Please help remind your child to practice on Study Island daily.
I hope to see you all at the Parent Meeting that is taking place in the Media Center today at 3:00!
Reflection for September 26, 2011
Happy rainy Monday! Today in Art class, the students began work on Anti-Bullying posters. They are to work on these posters at home, as well as devise a slogan for their poster.
In science we are beginning our unit on body systems. There is a great Brainpop video that I shared, and students are encouraged to share it with you at home! We will be discussing the systems of the body and how they work together to keep our bodies running smoothly!
We had our Unit 1 math test today, and my goal is to have them all checked and returned tomorrow. Parents are asked to look over the test with their child and sign it. Students will then return the test to school. Look for test answers to be posted on my blog on the Class Notes page once all students have completed the test.
Just a reminder: The 5th grade parent meeting will be held at 3:00 on Wednesday, September 28th in the Media Center. I hope to see you all there!
Finally, a very happy birthday wish to Mahmoud and Siham, and a belated happy birthday to Mahdi! 🙂
Reflection for September 23, 2011
We have some SMART kids! We were practicing test taking skills today and we learned about crossing out answers that were not relevant. We did this using Study Island, and I HIGHLY ENCOURAGE the students to continue this at home! Students should be working on 4th grade Study Island topics, as this is what they will be tested on with the MEAP.
We have a math test on Monday, and a review sheet was passed out. Students were given the opportunity to meet in small groups if they were unsure of prime factorization and exponents. All students should be ready for the first math test! Don’t forget to have your child visit my Math tab for some practice with prime factorization and exponents.
Next week we will begin discussing body systems in science. It is usually a class favorite! I look forward to diving in!
Have a great weekend, and try to stay DRY! 🙂
