Book Reports
Greetings! We are beginning a weekly book report project in class this week. Every Monday, students will be expected to turn in their 5 paragraph book reports. They are to read a book, download an appropriate plan from the blog’s Language Arts page, go through the writing process, and produce a final product. Neatness and creativity count! For the month of March, we are focusing on non-fiction. We look forward to our students’ best work!
Imagery
Today we learned that imagery creates mental pictures through sensory language~words or phrases that appeal to the five senses. We explored Sensory Boxes for all 5 of our senses, and recorded descriptive words (imagery) for each item in the box. We also dove into our thesauruses, and found more descriptive words to add to our lists. Check out our pictures!
Science Experiments
Our class had to use what they know about physics to build a ramp and see whose car could travel the farthest. Contest winners to be announced shortly!

Parents,
Please make sure that planners are signed Thursday evening. These signed planners are 5th graders’ ticket in the door Friday morning!
Things to look for in the planner: Assignments and classroom projects, due dates, special announcements, missing/incomplete homework. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call!
Newsletter
Happy “Winter!” First and foremost, I would like to welcome back Mrs. Hanan Hussein to our classroom! She was our pre-student teacher through Wayne State last semester, and has graciously come back to be our student teacher this semester. We are so happy to have her back!
In Math we have just wrapped up fractions, decimals and percentages. We are now discussing and learning about exponents, scientific notation and standard notation. Also, if students were not satisfied with their math grades on past report cards, they may hire a teacher, meet with an adult, study their resource books and notes, and use the blog and Study Island to study and get help. Once the students feel they are ready, they can schedule a mini quiz and try to bump up their grade. Please encourage your child to sign up for mini quizzes.
In Science we have wrapped up our unit on life science, and are beginning our unit on physical science. We will be doing LOTS of hands-on learning, and the kids are super excited! I am currently working on mini quizzes for science as well.
In Language Arts we are wrapping up our tall tales unit, and will be moving into our historical fiction unit. We just received brand new Writer’s Workshop folders and our eager to jump in!
Homework Club is in full swing! Monday through Thursday, starting at 8:00 am, I have my room open for students to come in for extra help, to book shop, work on classwork or just to read. On some days, I am able to stay after school as well. I will let students know in the morning if I am available to stay after school, and they must them call a parent/guardian for permission. My hope is that students who are not confident in a particular goal or area will be able to get the help, one-on-one, that he/she needs. Please give me a call or send me an email if you have questions.
We continue to need boxes of tissues, packages of white copy paper, hand sanitizer and dry erase markers for our classroom. Any and all donations are truly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

The Math-A-Thon takes place this Tuesday morning. If you pass BOTH tests, you will get movie and popcorn! For all other Math Masters who only pass one test, open mike and ice cream will still be your reward. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!
From Our PTA President
Hello PTA Family,
First and foremost, PTA would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! I would like to thank all the parent/staff volunteers during our Holiday Shop. It was a great success. I would like to especially thank the Awada Family from Mrs. Mardini’s class for donating bags of toys for PTA to sell. We made 100% profit on the toys that the Awada Family donated.
Next on our agenda: The PTA meeting on January 24 is rescheduled for Wednesday, February 1 @3pm in the Media Center. The agenda for the February meeting will focus on Valentine’s Day. In the past PTA have sold heart shaped lollipops. The kids were able to purchase them during that week and were distributed on February 14 after school.
We will also briefly discuss our annual Bookfair which will take place on March 12-16. This is always a huge success and we most definitely need lots of volunteers for this event.
The January Monthly Budget will be available on Wed., Feb. 1 at our meeting.
