Bridging the Gap

Bridge the Gap…General Education/Special Education:

This month our students learned more about our Snow School students who have a special education eligibility.  We have 5 classrooms at Snow that are self-contained special education classrooms.  While students in these classrooms learn differently, we are more alike than we are different.  It is up to us as leaders to make sure everyone feels included.  Saying or waving hello, offering a compliment,  helping a student who may have fallen are just a few ways we can connect with students who learn differently.  We can also help students learn social behaviors by modeling good behavior.  When we witness students making a bad choice we can tell them a better choice they could make.  We can also try to understand that if we see challenging behavior, it may be out of that student’s control or part of their disability.  Empathy is the ability to put ourselves into someone else’s shoes.  Questions you may want to ponder at home to further this discussion:  How would life change if  I had a disability?  What would I need to help me learn?  How would I want others to treat me?  Everyone wants to feel included and it is our hope to make sure that we are showing kindness and empathy so that everyone feels included.

Homework

Good Afternoon!

I hope that you are enjoying this beautiful fall day!  Spelling words came home today.  Students have until Monday to complete the spelling homework and the spelling test will be on Monday.  We will not have spelling words next week due to the short week.

Math homework came home for both grades today.  Please support your child as needed and have him/her return it to school tomorrow.

**Timed test for 2nd graders for multiplying by zero and multiplying by one will be tomorrow.  Ask your 2nd grader about our Multiplication Star Wars Clubs!

Field Trip

Dear Parents,

On Thursday, December 8th, our classes will be traveling on a field trip to The Cranbrook Institute of Science in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.  Students will have the opportunity for hands-on science learning by visiting the exhibit:  “Megalodon – The Largest Shark That Ever Lived” and learn about fossils in the class “Dinosaur Tale.”   We will also tour the science museum.  Students must bring a sack lunch with disposable drink.  The cost of our museum visit is $12.00.  Please send cash only by Tuesday, November 22nd.

We can take up to 5 chaperones per classroom.  Please let your child’s teacher know if you’d like to chaperone.  In the case that there are more than 5 volunteers, the teacher will then have to pull names from a hat.  Due to the school bus being full to capacity, parents will be asked to carpool and meet us at the museum.  Parents are asked to pay $2 for fee into the museum for the day.

If you are chosen to chaperone by your child’s teacher, please be sure that your Criminal Background Check is up to date in the school office. You may do this by calling Michelle or Cathy at 827-6250.  If you have never filled out a background check, you must visit the school office with your driver’s license.  Background Checks take up to 10 days to get verified, so please check with the office by Tuesday, November 22nd.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Grizzell, Mrs. Nowak and Mrs. Sabellico

Work Hard and Be Proud of Your Achievements Showcase

WORK HARD AND BE PROUD OF YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS Showcase:

Dear Students and Families of Snow School,

There are many wonderful milestones that have been accomplished by our students at school and in our community.  As part of our Leader in Me Program, we would like to showcase these milestones.  If your son/daughter individually, or as part of your family, a group or a team, has risen to the next level in anything-sports/reading/volunteering, etc., or  has shown great leadership, participated in charity events, helps out at Scouts, church, or in another way, please send in documentation and we will post these in our new showcase for Leadership.  Items, with names!!!, should be sent to Mrs. Zechar.  Your items will be returned after the month they have been posted.  If we get a lot of entries we might have to hold on to yours for a bit before it gets posted.  Thanks for your help in celebrating our Snow School Community!

STEAM

Congratulations to the following students who qualified for the prestigious STEAM club:

1st graders:  McKenna, Zoe, Blaire, Charlotte & Sara S.

2nd graders:  Ryan, Vinny, Izzy, Maggie & Susan

These students qualified based on their high achievement on the fall NWEA.  STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art/ Architecture and Mathematics.  Mrs. Zechar will work with these students, once a week, to give challenging projects to expand their learning.  Students who did not qualify, may qualify in January after taking the test again.  AMAZING JOB boys and girls!! 🙂
