Free Lunch Available to ALL Students

Dearborn Schools Offering Free Lunch, Breakfast To All Students

-All students except preschool now eligible for free meals under special federal guidelines

Dearborn Public Schools is expanding its free lunch programs to all students, regardless of family income.

The District was recently informed by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) that it was eligible to offer free meals across the district based on criteria in the Community Eligibility Program (CEP) under the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s school meals program.  Previously, free meals under CEP were offered to all kindergarten to 8th grade students at 14 schools in the district.   Free meals across the rest of the district started the week of September 10, 2018.

“Any time we can provide our students with resources that will help them be successful in school, such as a nutritious breakfast and or a healthy lunch, that’s a positive that we cannot pass up,” said Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko.

Studies show that good health, including good nutrition is important to student success.

While students will not need money to buy meals, most schools will continue to offer individual items for sale in their cafeteria such as extra milk, snacks, or a second lunch.  Children would need money in hand or in their student account to buy those items.

The CEP program will be retroactive to the beginning of the school year.  Students who already paid for lunches will have that money refunded to their student accounts or might be eligible for a refund.   Any refund details are still being considered, and details will be shared with schools as soon as they are available.

Even with the expansion of the lunch program, the district will still ask families to fill out information about household income, although on a different form.  This information is needed for schools to be eligible for other programs, including federal Title 1 funding. Dearborn Public Schools received more than $12 million in such funding last year. Dearborn Schools will also have to occasionally survey selected families to see if the district still qualifies for CEP.

While not all of Dearborn’s schools qualify for CEP on their own, the district used a provision that allows it to average schools together to meet the threshold for all its 36 kindergarten through 12thgrade schools.  The program is not available to preschool students, so it will not be offered at Cotter School. (Students enrolled in the GSRP program at Cotter can qualify for free or reduced lunch under other federal programs.) Students will also be able to get free breakfasts in the buildings that offer the CEP program.  Across Michigan, 652 schools participate in CEP.

CEP was designed to allow schools or districts with a higher percentage of low-income families to streamline the free lunch process.  To qualify for the program, the area needs to have 40 percent of students automatically identified for free lunch. Typically, that means the family already receives some other type of assistance such as food stamps or Medicare.

The schools that were already enrolled in CEP include Becker Elementary, Henry Ford Elementary, Lowrey School, Maples Elementary, McCollough Elementary, McDonald Elementary, Miller Elementary, Oakman Elementary, River Oaks Elementary, Salina Elementary and Intermediate, Unis Middle, William Ford Elementary and Woodworth Middle.

Homework Tonight

Good Afternoon,

Your child will be coming home with spelling and math homework tonight.  The spelling consists of a worksheet with choices for your child to study his/her words.  Your child may pick ANY THREE of the boxes to work on for the week.  Spelling is due on Friday.  Our spelling test will be Friday as well.  For math, there is one worksheet that matches what we worked on in class today.  There is a “Homework Helper” sheet attached to homework to help if you have any questions.  Math will be due tomorrow.

Thank you for your support at home!

Box Tops Competition

The Snow PTA is holding a Box Tops competition where the top three students will win prizes.  Please put your box tops in an envelope or baggie with your child’s name and teacher.  Make sure to get them in by THIS Friday, when the contest ends!

We will continue to collect Box Tops after Friday, but they will not count toward the competition.

Thank you!

We are off to an AMAZING start!  I’m thankful for a GREAT class full of wonderful listeners!  Parents, thank you for your support.  You have raised wonderful children!

Good Afternoon!

We had a GREAT first day!  Thank you for your help with preparing your child for school.  Emergency cards were sent home today.  They will need to be updated, signed and returned to school as soon as possible.  Some students accidentally grabbed mail from the wrong mailbox at dismissal.  Please be sure to check your child’s emergency card and make sure that it lists his/her name at the top.  I have collected 2 that accidentally went home in the wrong backpack today.  We will straighten this out soon and I’m sorry for any confusion.

2nd day of school reminders:

Walk in the school independently – say goodbye to parents outside.

Bring an ice water bottle to keep on desk.

Bring a snack.

Full lunch day.  Either bring a lunch or be prepared to order hot lunch.

Thank you!  Enjoy your afternoon!

I want to have an open and understanding relationship with you and your child.

Arrival:  Please have your child line up on the cement located outside of Door 2. (Culver St. side of school) At the bell, I will meet the children outside and walk them into the classroom.  To help students gain independence, I ask that they say goodbye to you outside and they enter the building with classmates.

***Please let me know if your child will be riding the bus to and from school.***

Tardy Students:  Please try your best to ensure that your child is on time.  The entry bell rings at 8:35 a.m. and the tardy bell at 8:40 a.m.  Any child coming to school after 8:40 a.m. MUST be taken to the office by an adult and signed in.

Dismissal:  Our class will dismiss through the same door, (door 2), that they enter in each morning.  The students and I will be waiting outside of door 2 until they spot you. They should be picked up promptly at 3:35 p.m.  Children who are not picked up shortly after the bell will be sent to the office for their safety. Also, for the safety of your child, please keep me informed throughout the year of any changes in your child’s routine.

Classroom Blog:  To stay as up to date as possible, I will be maintaining a class blog page:

https://iblog.dearbornschools.org/grizzell/

This will be a GREAT source of information about the classroom happenings!  Please let me know if you would NOT like your child’s photo to be posted on our classroom blog.

Classroom Management / Discipline Policy:  I will provide a positive learning environment and I expect your child to come ready to listen, respect others and try his/her very best.  Snow Elementary will continue implementing a school-wide behavior system, PBIS – Positive Behavior Intervention Support. During the first few weeks of school, your child will review the rewards and consequences of this behavior system.

Individual Reward:  Every day your child has the opportunity to earn blue tickets (Pack Pride Points) for following the behavior expectations, demonstrating an exceptional act of kindness, or positive effort on a task.  At the end of each week, I will randomly pull blue tickets from a box. If your child’s ticket was pulled, then he/she may earn a toy or sweet treat from our prize box. Also, your child’s name may be called on the school’s morning announcements as a special recognition.  I will happily accept toy or candy donations throughout the school year. I appreciate your support!

Whole Group Reward:  Students will be encouraged to work well together.  Whole group rewards include: popcorn, sweet treats, or free time on the computer.

Homework Folders:  Your child will receive a Homework Folder on the first week of school.  All notes and homework will be placed in this folder. Homework Folders will travel to and from school each day.  Please check your child’s folder every evening.

Book Bags:  Your child will receive a Book Bag within the first 2 weeks of school.  More information will come home soon.

Lunch:  Our lunch time is 12:00-12:38 p.m.  Students will enjoy recess first and then eat lunch in the cafeteria.

Special Schedule –   As of now, our special schedule is:

Monday:  Art  Tuesday: Enrichment

Wednesday:  Gym & Media

Thursday:  Music

Friday:  Music

Field Trips:  We are planning to go on three field trips this year.  If you would like to join us for field trips, please make sure you have completed the background check in the office.  I would recommend filling out the form asap. The form takes 10 school days to process through the Dearborn Police Department.  It good for three years, so if you completed it within the last 2 years, then you are all set!

Birthdays:  If they choose, students may celebrate their birthdays by bringing a treat to share with the class.  Please refrain from sending treats with any type of nut because of nut allergies. As of now, we have 19 students.

Many exciting things are planned to ensure quality learning experiences.  To get off to a good start, we would like your help. This suggested list of items will be beneficial for your child to bring to class.  If you are unable to purchase all of these items, there is no need to worry.
