Stop the Summer Reading Slide

Here at Haigh Elementary, we’re pleased to let you know that your student, or students, can use the following fun website to improve reading skills: MyCapstoneLibrary.com.  All a student needs to do is to go to the site, put in the following username and password, and click on the word go. Capstone Interactive is free through 8/31/18.

Capstone reading username:   summer18

Capstone reading password:   lovetoread

Please note that the Capstone reading program, with thousands of full books, gets pretty busy at times. Your student may need to attempt to sign in two or three times.  (All of our students can also use Mobymax, Khan Academy, Code.org, and Typing.com if they go to Dearbornschools.org, select students, and select Clever. Staff blogs are also available all summer long.)  There’s also another reading program at getepic.com. It’s free if you use my account.

This program has a free app called Epic! Unlimited Books for Kids.  Parents can now purchase access to the online version of this for three months for just three dollars–or join free for 30 days.  Offer ends 6/12/18. (Using my teacher account, students can also sign in by entering this classroom code: QNX-8233.  Use of my account is free.)  You can find out more information about this fun program, a program that motivates students to read, by going to the following site: www.getepic.com/summer-of-reading.  If you can, please take a look at both Epic! And MyCapstoneLibrary.com.

Readworks Parent Letter

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Summer is a great time to support your child’s reading progress! Students who don’t read much over the summer show a decline in reading performance from the end of one year to the start of the next. Reading over the summer can help your child maintain the reading gains they made during the year AND also help prepare them for next year!

Here are a few simple ways for you to help:

  1. Create your free Parent/Guardian account on ReadWorks.org

ReadWorks is a nonprofit that provides educators with thousands of free, high-quality nonfiction and fiction articles with questions and activities. ReadWorks is inviting you – all parents & guardians – to create your own free account to help your child stay on track this summer, and all year round!

  1. Go to www.readworks.org
  2. Click on “I’m an Educator”  (parents are educators too!)
  3. Click on the blue “Sign Up”
  4. Make sure to choose “Parent/Guardian” as your role
  1. Print Free Summer Reading Packets Now – www.readworks.org/summer-reading

To make summer reading easy, ReadWorks has curated interesting and knowledge filled summer reading packets on a range of levels that you can print and download for free!

Keep these tips in mind when using ReadWorks this summer:

TIP 1: Summer reading should be accessible and enjoyable, so be sure to choose articles that are at your child’s reading level. Don’t be afraid to start with articles from lower grade levels. The important thing is that students, read, read, read!

TIP 2: Aside from giving your child access to these high-quality texts, helping them keep track of their summer reading and discussing what they’ve been read with family members can also go a long way!

I hope you and your family have a great summer!

PBIS Celebration

PBIS Celebrations

Dear Families,

On Wednesday, May 30th we will be having a PBIS celebration to recognize your child’s positive behavior. This month’s celebration theme is A Day of Play. We will be having our lunch outside and enjoying outdoor play, so let’s hope the weather stays pleasant!

Your child may bring a towel or blanket to sit on during the picnic lunch, and we strongly encourage students bring a brown bag lunch since we will be eating outside. However, a bag lunch (cheese, crackers, or hummus and pita) will still be available for purchase in the cafeteria.

Thank you,

Haigh PBIS Committee

Help Wanted – Field Day

Dear Parents and Guardians,

To help us celebrate another fantastic school year, we will be having Field Day on Monday, May 14, 2018.  For this Field Day event students will work through stations with their class to develop skills they have learned in physical education and have tons of fun!  The schedule for the event is as follows:

9:00 AM – 11:00 AM: Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grades

1:00 PM – 3:00 PM: 3rd, 4th and 5th Grades

On May 14, students need to wear clothes that will allow them to be physically active outside, including tennis shoes.  They need to bring a water bottle. Students are highly encouraged to bring a water bottle that can be refilled at the refill station that we will provide.

We are looking for one parent from each classroom to donate a treat for the entire class to enjoy after their session.  We are also pre-selling Fla-vor-ice as a cool treat for students to enjoy during the activities. The cost for the Fla-vor-ice is $0.50, only one Fla-vor-ice per student please. Fla-vor-ice money is due by Monday, May 7.

Lastly, we need 15 parent volunteers for both sessions to help run stations.  If you are interested in volunteering, fill out the lower portion and return it to Mr. Peecher.  Please, contact Mr. Peecher with any questions.

Thanks!  The PBIS/Field Day Committee  peeches@dearbornschools.org

*We will only be able to accommodate students & parent volunteers for this event.

MStep Testing Begins

We will begin our MStep testing this week. Our test days will be Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The testing will be in the morning only. The students are allowed to bring in a healthy snack for our break on these days. It will be a 15 minute break so the snack needs to be consumed during this time, along with a bathroom and drink break.
