Welcome Back! 8/31/20

I hope everyone enjoyed some fun and relaxation this summer!

Monday, August 31 – Advisory teachers will be contacting their students/parents by phone.

Tuesday, September 1 – Students will follow the half-day schedule (below). Seventh graders will be meeting with all of their classes virtually via Schoology/Zoom.

Wednesday, September 2 – No Zoom meetings for seventh graders. Teachers will be at Bryant from 8:30-11:30 distributing materials to students/families.  You may also pick up a Chromebook if needed. Be sure to come and also say “hi” to your teachers!

Thursday, September 3 – same schedule as Tuesday

Friday, September 4 – No School

Monday, September 7 – No School

1) To get to your Schoology courses, you need to go to dearbornschools.org, then go to the Student Portal page, and click the Schoology link. Sign in with Google using your district username and password.

2) Once you are in Schoology, click on Courses near the top or “My Courses” at the right. As you are looking at the courses be sure you select the version of the course that shows “S1” in the title or you may notice “SQ1” in the technical name for the course which is just below the title.

As an example, my first hour math course says the title “7th Grade Math S1” and below it says “Per1-SQ1-Sec10”.  S1 stands for semester 1, Per1 stands for period 1 (1st hour), SQ1 stands for semester/quarter 1, Sec 10 stands for section 10 (which means nothing for us teachers and students…it is for scheduling purposes)

3) Once you have clicked the name of the course, it will open and you will find the Zoom link your teacher created. Click the link and Zoom should prepare to open. You need to be patient as you wait for your teacher to let you into the video call.

The half day schedule…

Half Day Schedule for 7th grade

I look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday! Please email me if you have any questions!   furlowd@dearbornschools.org

Reminder, Parent Survey, PTA Fundraiser

All grades for last week’s assignments are entered! Late work grades have been updated based on what I have been emailed about up through this morning!

REMINDERS:

Please be sure to have all math late work completed by Tuesday night (June 9th).  I recommend that students log in to Student Connect to check their math grades by Monday June 8th. If you see that you are missing more than 5 points for an assignment in the grade book it is because you did not complete all the skills assigned for that week. If you are missing between 1 and 5 points, you did not earn all the points for a skill due to your smart score in IXL or percent in Khan….you can retry the skill to earn more points if you would like. Refer to my email on June 2 at 11:54am for how to figure out which skills are missing.

PARENT SURVEY:

Parents, Dearborn Schools is hoping to get your feedback…
Please complete this school reopening survey by Friday, June 12th. For translation assistance, parents may call 313-580-2532 Monday June 8th through Friday June 12th 8:30a.m. through 4:30p.m.

PTA FUNDRAISER:

The Bryant PTA is having an end-of-year fundraiser…Bryant face coverings.
Sale runs through Sunday, June 14.     PTA Face Coverings Sale

Assignments- Week of 6/1/20

Grades will be entered this afternoon/evening for Week 6 assignments (week of 5/25), as well as for late work from previous weeks (up through what I have today). If you choose to catch up on anything from a previous week or choose to improve any of your scores this week, please email me to let me know so I can update your grade, otherwise I won’t know you completed it…I don’t get a notification from IXL or Khan.

ASSIGNMENTS

This week will be our last week of new assignments. Yay!! Please have all late/missing work completed by Tuesday, June 9th. I need time to check all late/missing work and update the grades online.

This week is all about interpreting data in different types of displays and graphs – tables, line plots, bar graphs, histograms, circle graphs, line graphs. Also, you will practice creating a bar graph from data given. These are skills that often show up on tests like NWEA, MStep, PSAT, etc. There are no videos for this week, but these practices should be pretty straightforward. However, if you need support, before you answer the first IXL problem for each skill, you may want to click the part where it says “Learn With an Example” which will show right above the problem, but below the light blue bar that tells the name of the skill you are working on.

Assignments are due THIS FRIDAY, June 5.

No KHAN ASSIGNMENTS this week.

The IXL ASSIGNMENTS are:
7th grade skill  * BB1 (Interpret Tables)
7th grade skill  * BB2 (Interpret Line Plots)
7th grade skill  * BB7 (Interpret Bar Graphs)
7th grade skill  * BB8 (Create Bar Graphs)
7th grade skill  * BB9 (Interpret Histograms)
7th grade skill  * BB12 (Interpret Circle Graphs)
7th grade skill  * BB14 (Interpret Line Graphs)

VIDEO CHAT/CHECK-IN FOR THIS WEEK

As of now, I have not scheduled a video chat session for this week. If something changes, I will post to the blog and post in Google Classroom.

QUESTIONS?

As always, feel free to email me with any questions and I will respond as soon as possible.

Make it a great week!

Assignments- Week of 5/25/20

Grades have been entered for Week 5 assignments (week of 5/18), as well as for late work from previous weeks (up through what I had today). If you choose to catch up on anything from a previous week or choose to improve any of your scores this week, please email me to let me know so I can update your grade, otherwise I won’t know you completed it…I don’t get a notification from IXL or Khan.

ASSIGNMENTS

This week we are working on area of circles. I highly recommend you begin with the Khan Academy work for this week first. You will see that I assigned two videos, two articles, and 2 practice exercises in Khan Academy, however I suggest you complete them in the order I listed below. You will notice that one of the articles and one video talks a little bit about circumference. Certainly, the information is worth listening to and reading about, however you will not have to work on any circumference problems this week…you don’t have to answer the circumference examples in the article either. Before you start the first IXL problem, you probably want to click the part where it says “Learn With an Example” which will show right above the problem, but below the light blue bar that tells the name of the skill you are working on. You will definitely want to be sure you have a calculator with you when you do all of your work in Khan Academy or IXL this week, or use the online calculator that I shared a link to in Google Classroom.

Assignments are due THIS FRIDAY, May 29.

The KHAN ASSIGNMENTS are:
* Video: Labeling Parts of a Circle
* Article: Radius, Diameter & Circumference
* Exercise: Radius and Diameter
* Video: Area of a Circle
* Article: Area of Circles Review
* Exercise: Area of a Circle

The IXL ASSIGNMENT is:
7th grade skill  * AA5 (Area of Circles)

Assignments- Week of 5/18/20

Grades will be entered today and tomorrow for Week 4 assignments (week of 5/11), as well as for late work from previous weeks (up through what I have today). If you have caught up on anything from a previous week or choose to improve any of your scores, please email me to let me know so I can update your grade, otherwise I won’t know you completed it…I don’t get a notification from IXL or Khan.

ASSIGNMENTS

This week we are working on inequalities- choosing solutions to inequalities, writing inequalities from seeing a graph, and solving one-step inequalities. Again, in 6th grade you did work with inequalities, probably only using greater than (>) and less than (<) symbols and most likely without negative numbers. In Google Classroom I have uploaded a resource that shows you the symbols we use for inequalities and what each of them means, as well as the “rules” for inequalities. Also, I shared the link to Mr. Suni’s blog because he created a good video with examples for each of the assigned IXL skills, so you can click the link for the video under his 1st/2nd hour.

Assignments are due THIS FRIDAY, May 22.

No KHAN ASSIGNMENTS this week.

The IXL ASSIGNMENTS are:
7th grade skill  * T1 (Solutions to Inequalities)
7th grade skill  * T3 (Write Inequalities from Number Lines)

7th grade skill  * T4 (Solve One-step Inequalities)

Have a great week! Eid Mubarak to those that will celebrate this weekend!

Assignments- Week of 5/11/20

Grades will be entered today and tomorrow for Week 3 assignments (week of 5/4), as well as for late work from previous weeks (up through what I have today). If you completed work and see that you didn’t earn full points, it is most likely that you did not earn the highest score for the skill in Khan or IXL OR you are missing one or more of the skills. If you choose to improve any of your scores or get caught up on anything from a previous week, please email me to let me know when you are finished with something so I can update your grade.

ASSIGNMENTS

This week we are working on combining like terms to create equivalent expressions and also to solve equations. This is something you did in 6th grade, but without negative numbers. Also, I had assigned some Khan practice on these topics back in March. Assignments are due THIS FRIDAY, May 15.

The KHAN ASSIGNMENTS are:
* Video: Intro to Combining Like Terms
* Video: Simplifying expressions
* Exercise: Combining Like Terms with Negative Coefficients

The IXL ASSIGNMENTS are:
6th grade skill  * Z10 (Solve equations involving like terms)
7th grade skill  * R14 (Add and subtract linear expressions)

7th grade skill  * R New! (Identify equivalent linear expressions using algebra tiles) – This skill is listed UNDER R16.

Assignments- Week of 5/4/20

Grades will be updated today for last week’s assignments, as well as grades for late work from previous weeks (as of yesterday).

SOME THINGS TO BRING TO YOUR ATTENTION
  • The list of skills/videos that I have assigned in Khan Academy is growing. Only about 8-10 tasks are shown on the page at a time, so be sure to scroll down near the bottom of the list to click “Next” to see more. I believe some of you just did what was shown on the main page and thought you were caught up….you didn’t realize you should check for a second page or third page. Refer to each blog post for the names of all the skills/videos assigned each week!
  • Many kids are skipping the videos in Khan. I’m not sure why, as they should be helpful and are usually very short. For those of you that are scoring low on the practice skills, it is probably due to the fact that you skipped the video(s). Go back, watch the video(s), then retry the skill.
  • Some kids are only watching videos I assigned and not doing the practice skills. Perhaps you thought you would watch videos one day and do the skills another day and just forgot, but you need to go back to finish the skills.
  • In IXL, some of you are doing just the 7th grade skills or just the 6th grade skills…I have been giving you a mix of skills from each grade. Refer to each blog post for the names of the skills assigned each week and which grade they are under!
ASSIGNMENTS

We are working on 1-step equations word problems this week and reviewing two-step equations. Assignments are due THIS FRIDAY, May 8.

The KHAN ASSIGNMENTS are:
* Video:  Modeling with one-step equations
* Exercise: Translate one-step equations and solve

The IXL ASSIGNMENTS are:
6th grade skills  * Z8 and Z9 (Solve one-step equations: word problems; Solve two-step equations)
7th grade skill  * S7 (Solve equations: word problems)

Points earned for each skill is based on IXL smart score or Khan Academy percent:
75 – 100 = 5 pts
60 – 74 = 4 pts
40 – 59 = 3 pts
1 – 39 = 1 pt
0 = 0

Assignments- Week of 4/27/20

(ALSO WILL POST THIS BLOG LINK ON GOOGLE CLASSROOM)

Assignments: Khan Academy (listed below), IXL (listed below). We are NOT going to work on I-Ready for this week.

As of now, I have not scheduled a Gooogle Hangout for this week, as they were cancelled last week. The district is recommending an alternative for video chats, but I am not yet set up for that. I will keep you posted.

Grades for last week’s work will be updated today. If you completed the work and see that you didn’t earn full points, it is most likely that you did not earn the highest score or you are missing part of the Khan work or IXL work. You may improve any of your scores and/or get caught up on anything you did not finish and email me when you are ready or done so I can update your grade. Advisory teachers are going to be getting in touch with students/families each week to let them know if all work is (or is not) caught up.

These assignments are due THIS FRIDAY, May 1.

We are working on 2-step equations this week. They are called 2-step equations because they involve two operations. The operations will be either multiplication or division AND either addition or subtraction.

I suggest you use a notebook or looseleaf to show your work so that in the event you have a question, you are prepared to email your question to me with an example of a specific problem from IXL or Khan Academy.

The KHAN ASSIGNMENTS are:
* Video: Two-step equations intuition
* Video: Two-step equations
* Exercise: Worked example: Two-step equations

The IXL assignments are:
6th grade skill * Z11 Solving equations involving integers
7th grade skill * S6 Solve two-step equations

For IXL your smart score AND Khan Academy points moving forward are:
75 – 100 = 5 pts
60 – 74 = 4 pts
40 – 59 = 3 pts
1 – 39 = 1 pt
0 = 0

**Reminders for logging in to Khan Academy and IXL: Be sure you go through CLEVER to get to Khan Academy or you will not see the assignments from me! The assignments will show on your home page or you can click the “Assignments” tab on the left. If you have other family members that have school accounts or that use Gmail AND use the same device as you, make sure they they are signed out of their account before you go into CLEVER, otherwise you will login to Khan with their account and not your own. Be sure you are logged in to IXL or your smart score will not be saved and I cannot see it to give you credit! You will be able to check the “Recommendations” to see the assignments from this week and the prior week or you can go to the 6th grade math page and 7th grade math page to scroll to the skills I listed above (you will see they are “starred”).

Check Google Classroom, Please

Due to the fact that we were not able to have our originally scheduled video meeting today, I posted one multiple choice question on Google Classroom about this week’s assignments for students to respond to. I thought it would be a very simple, quick check-in with everyone. Please check it out!

Friday Google Meets/Hangouts CANCELLED

There have been a lot of issues with Meets/Hangouts today across the district, so all Meets/Hangouts with students tomorrow are not going to happen. Not sure about next week…we are waiting until the district gives us direction. Sorry about this inconvenience!

If anyone needs support for completing your math work, please email me and I can do my best to answer your question(s) via email. Your assignments for this week are due tomorrow (Friday 4/24).

Thank you in advance for your patience as the glitches get worked out! The district wants to make sure there are safeguards in place for both teachers and students.
