Happenings for April 8th – 12th

8th Grade:

This week we continue our shoe models which should be completed by Wednesday. Our next step in the design process is to communicate our succes by creating a commercial which will showcase our shoe designs. Our goal is to complete this unit by April 26th with spending two days watching our commercials.

7th Grade:

This week we get into our architecture unit by learning about what makes up a floor plan and seeing examples of floor plans. Students will then begin creating their floor plan using smallblueprinter.com. We will complete the floor plans by April 18th.

6th Grade:

This week starts a new marking period and therefore a new group of 6th graders will be learning about technology. This week we will begin with an introduction to the class. We will then start working on measuring using inches.

Happenings for March 25th-29th

8th Grade:

We continue the manufacturing unit with the creation of our shoes on Sketchup. Students should send their final designs to me no later than March 27th. Our next activity is to create our shoe as a model out of cardboard. We will continue with the shoe model after spring break.

7th Grade:

This week we will be using the fonts we created to make a card. Students can make any type of card such as a birthday card or get well card but it must include their font style. This activity is complete on the 29th when packets are also due.

6th Grade: 

This is our final week together as we are approaching the end of marking period 3. All boards and rules must be complete by the 27th so that groups may have time to test out their own game and make any changes as needed. We will be testing out all games on the 29th.

Happenings for March 18th – 22nd

8th Grade:

Students are working hard on their manufacturing unit. This weeks focus is on drawing out the shoe design on a printer paper and then learning how to use the Sketchup program by creating a turtle sandbox. Once that is complete we will move onto creating the shoe in Sketchup and print it.

7th Grade:

This weeks focus is on creating a font. We have watched videos about typography (the study of fonts) and we will continue with students researching current fonts to help them design their own ideas. Students will create a rough draft and then draw their fonts onto large drafting paper.

6th Grade:

We continue with board game design this week with students focusing on working in their groups to create both a board and rules.

Happenings for March 11th-15th

8th Grade:

Students began their biotechnology unit ast week by learning about how technology helps people live normal lives. We began construction of our artificial hand models and will be finishing those up on Monday. Tuesday is the day we will spend without the use of our non-dominate aaram and hand. Students will need to come see me between 7:50-8:00 to pick up their tag and a half sheet to take to teachers and then come see me from 2:47-3:00 to drop off their tags and sheets.

Our next unit will be on manufacturing which will last several weeks.

7th Grade:

Students are working diligently on their PSA commercials and have come up with some excellent topics! I am so impressed with the work they are doing. We should finish these and begin presenting them to the class starting on Friday.

6th Grade:

Students have completed their invention projects and I loved their models, google slides and timelines. They really put in alot of work and time into this! This week begins our board game activity. We will be working in groups of 3-4 to build an original board game and create rules to go with their games. We will be testing out the games at the end of the marking period which is Mach 29th.

Happenings for February 25th – March 1st

8th Grade:

Students will continue to work on their career templates in class. The template for the brochure as well as career ideas can be found in the iblog from Feburary 22nd. Students can work on the brochure this week until Friday.  Packets and brochures are due no later than Friday. Extra credit for this unit is also due on Friday!

Students who finish early will be directed to the next unit beginning on Wednesday which in on Biotechnology.

*As always students are expected to use their time wisely in class and work on our assignments first before goign onto other activities. Students may bring in a book to read or work from another class ONLY after our work is completed

7th Grade:

Students have been doing an awesome job on their egg crash vehicles so far. I have heard some great group discussions regarding solving contruction problems. Groups are progressing very well! Remember to complete daily task logs and to speak to other groups about their progress on their vehicles. Our goal is to complete the vehicles by Friday with students continuously testing on the ramp to “work out the bugs”. Final testing is slated for March 5th.

6th Grade:

We are beginning the research portion of our Technology and Invention unit this week. Students will need to have chosen a topic by Monday. They will research when the invention was created, where it was invented, who the inventor was, some fun facts about the invention and how their invention is related to others  They will type a one page paper as part of this activity and the second part of the activity will be a choice of a model of the invention or a powerpoint which displays the invention information, including pictures or  a timeline of the invention.

***When you finish this activity you are to make sure your packet is finished, staple the brochure to your packet and turn this work along with extra credit by Wednesday February 27th.

***Next go to the SKETCHUP icon found on your desktop and practice using the program. Use this time to practice using the toolbar. We will be using this program in a few weeks and you will want to be comfortable with the activity.

Happenings for February 19th – 22nd

8th Grade:

Students will begin thier unit on careers. We will look at various careers in technology that are popular among students. Students will then research a career they are interested in and display their knowledge by creating a brochure which displays information about their career.

Students will need to have the follwing information on their brochure:

Name of the career

Why this career is a good choice?

What the basic job skills are of this career?

What is the median pay?

What is th ejob outlook 10 years from now?

Which schools are est for this career and what degree do you need?

Where can someone get more information about the career?

7th Grade:

This week we will be discussing how vehicles are desgined to keep us safe. We will research ways to create an egg crash vehicle which will be rolled down a ramp and hit a barrier.  This activity will take about 3 weeks to complete.

6th Grade:

This week begins our unit on Technology and inventions. Students will be researching inventions and then will be asked to research one they are interested in learning more about. This activity will take three weeks.

Second, you are to work on the following measuring game. Copy and paste this link into your browser. You may change the settings to remove the timer and increase the difficulty by going form 1/2″ measurements to 1/16 inch measurements. Play until you can get all measurements correct in a ten minute span of time.

Fourth, Take a look at the summative activity for this unit (1/2 sheet rubric). Begin the activity using google docs. READ the rubric carefully! You will have today, Monday and Tuesday to complete the activity. We will watch and critiques these on Wednesday!

8th Grade:

Students will finish the internet safety activity from Friday. Turn in word search and your Google Doc from Friday by Monday the 4th. Our new unit this week will focus on reviewing measuring skills. We will work in both small groups and individually. Our summative activity will be to create a google slide document which will teach someone about how to measure.

7th Grade:

Students will finish the internet safety activity from Friday. Turn in word search and your Google Doc from Friday by Monday the 4th. Our new unit this week will focus on reviewing measuring skills. We will work in both small groups and individually. Our summative activity will be to create a 2D house and truck using construction paper and by following measured lengths.

6th Grade:

Students will continue to work on measuring skills by playing measuring games, working in table groups to measure objects and finally making a ruler themselves.

8th Grade and 7th Grade:

A part of learning about technology involves the use of computers in class. We not only need to respect our school computers but remember that what we do on the computer must also be safe.

Your assignment:

Read the above article and then type one paragraph on google docs explaining why internet safety is important to follow.

  1. Include things you may have seen about internet predators on the news or have read about online.
  2. Type a second paragraph about what you can do if you witness a friend, sibling or relative break one of these internet rules. Explain how you would feel and maybe how the other person would feel about you getting involved in their business.
  3. Locate an advertisement or poster online which displays how kids can be safe using the internet. Make sure it is informative

6th Grade:

This week we will start to work on how to measure in inches. We will begin with the history of measuring and then how to measure in fractions.
