8th Grade

JOURNAL:  Your Choice – – It can be about whatever you want, but it must have a clear beginning, middle, and end.

Today we discussed the strategy of pathos/ethos/logos. We then took notes in our interactive notebook (Mr. Tabby) and re-grouped our print ads based upon this new knowledge. I also collected our 4 journals from this week.

JOURNAL:  Lesson – – Explain what you think the author wanted us to learn from reading “The Two Brothers”?  Explain.

Today students finished working with their groups to dissect the story “The Two Brothers”. They specifically were looking in the story to identify theme, setting, character characteristics, and main events.

We are still working on getting to class on time, bringing all of our materials the FIRST time, and using the bathroom between classes. Please talk with your student about organization and time management. Also, helping them to clearly label all of their folders and notebooks would be VERY helpful. Specifically, clearly marking them “LANGUAGE ARTS” or “MATH” so they grab they right ones 🙂

HOMEWORK: 1. Postcards are due MONDAY. 2. NWEA testing starts Tuesday with reading. 3. Students should have a book in class for when they are done testing.

Monday, August 26

Welcome back students and parents! What a whirlwind of a day! It was great to see all of you and meet the new 6th graders. Today in class I introduced myself to students and I got to learn a little about them. Today students learned the following about me:

  • I am the oldest of three (I have a brother 2 years younger and a sister 8 years younger).
  • I graduated from Miami University in Ohio with a Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature and Political Science. I earned my first Master’s Degree from The University of Michigan in English and my 2nd Master’s, also from U of M, in educational leadership.
  • This is my 22nd year of teaching. I have always taught in Dearborn – first at Woodworth Middle School and then at STEM.
  • In my free time I love to read historical fiction, travel, do SIMPLE art projects, and go to Michigan football games (my family has had season tickets for over 40 years!).
  • My favorite beverages are Coke and iced tea (I STRONGLY dislike coffee). My favorite foods are Thai, Mexican, Pizza, and chocolate 🙂
  • Lastly, this summer I traveled to New York City for the 4th of July fireworks. WOW! there is no better sight.

I can’t wait to get to know all of you a little better this school year. We are going to have a fantastic year 🙂
