8th Grade

JOURNAL: Race – – J. Frank Duryea, who was born on this day in 1869, with his brother Charles, built and operated the first automobile in the US. He also won America’s first automobile race.  If you could participate in any type of race what would it be and why?  Would it be on land, in the water, in the air?

Today students worked further on their group speeches with the goals of:

1. Outline their strategy/approach to the speech

2.Begin to write the speech – each person MUST contribute to the writing.

6th Grade

JOURNAL:  One Word Prompt- – Spirited

Students had 25 minutes to finish boards and practice presentations. We did it! Presentations will start tomorrow!

JOURNAL: Would You Rather?- – be a talented engineer or a talented coder?  Explain.

Today students started to work on their team speech in earnest. They had three goals to achieve:

1. Choose Topic

2. A LITTLE research

3. Outline strategy

6th Grade

JOURNAL:  Would You Rather – – live in a circular house or a triangular house?  Explain.

The goal today was to finish the story pitch boards, that didn’t quite happen 🙂 They are doing a GREAT job with these! The communication between group members and how every group member has a job means that I am happy to extend, hopefully, one more day and then we will start presentations.

JOURNAL:  College Essay – – What historical moment/even do you wish you could have witnessed?                       – Stanford University

1.  Team speech to present

  a.  Must be broken into 3 parts

  b.  Must use a variety of techniques

  c.  Cannot be longer than 2 minutes.

  d.  must have speech in a Google Doc – highlight and   label the different arguments:               

  i. pink – pathos

  ii. blue – ethos

  iii. yellow – logos

2.  Be sure to look at the rubric

Group challenge – Pitch Board Construction

1.Must be neat and readable from a distance

2.Must have good grammar, sentence fluency, and conventions

3.Be sure to include 4 relevant pictures

4.Do a rough draft first!!!!

5.Everyone in the group must be working on a section/part.

HOMEWORK:  Make sure that you are reading your books.  Your first book project is due in 20 days.

Would You Rather? – – Be the first person to explore a planet or discover an island?  Explain.

1. Small group read two speeches (Patrick Henry and Samuel Adams) – box and summarize

2.After you box and summarize, highlight and label the different arguments:

  a.  Blue – pathos

  b.  Red – ethos

  c.  Green – logos

Students did an EXCELLENT job working on these and translating them. It took a little longer than expected, but the critical thinking and collaboration was worth the time spent.

6th Grade

JOURNAL: Conflict – – Write 3 scenarios – one that has a person v. person conflict, one with a person v. self conflict, and one with a person v. nature conflict.

1.Group challenge – specifically, students worked with their team to make sure that the climax of their story made sense and was a good mid-way point between their conflict and their resolution.

2. I handed back the quiz that students took on Monday. I will meet with students who did not do well to talk with them about a retake opportunity next week after school.

2.Introduce project challenge: Your team works for the Fryzel Publishing Company and she is looking for the next bestselling children’s book.  Your team has been asked to “pitch” a story idea to the publishing executives before they give the go ahead to write the story.  They are asking for the team to construct a story board of the idea.  (a plot structure, a developed conflict, and a clear theme)

Journal:  Ads – – Of the ad presentations that you saw, which one was the MOST successful.  Explain.

Student worked with their small groups to sort and discussion all of the critical feedback they received from their presentations and then wrote a CER for each gear of critique.

Tomorrow, students will individually reflect on the project and the learning for a summative grade.

6th Grade

JOURNAL:  Freedom- – In “The Crane Maiden”, the old couple set the girl/crane free.  Do you agree or disagree with their decision?  Why?
