Just a reminder that next week is only a two day week (Monday and Tuesday). If you and your family are leaving town early, just be sure to check this blog for assignments and journals.

8th Grade

JOURNAL: Story Ending – – The LAST line of the story is “… the man in black fled across the desert, and the ice cream man followed him.”  Write the story.

1.  Introduce new unit and new essential question – How does an author create and build suspense in fictional stories?

2.  New essential learnings – During this unit we will be focused on plot development, character words and actions, as well as writing techniques that all help a writer to build suspense in a story.

HOMEWORK:  Book (2) check in MONDAY.  Have books and / or notes in class MONDAY. You can bring your books as well as your notes to use.

6th Grade

Journal: Your Choice – –

1.Read the story “All Summer in a Day” p. 68

2.Create a character cut-out for Margot – this is an INDIVIDUAL task.

A.Draw a picture of Margot based on the description given of her in the story.

B.Be sure the be detailed in your answers and use complete sentences.

HOMEWORK:  Make sure that you are reading your book for your project that is due December 12th.

Students finished their summative argumentative essays on typing v. handwriting. We will begin our new unit tomorrow – however, we are NOT done working on argumentative essays 🙂

6th Grade

JOURNAL: Rainy – – Describe your perfect rainy day.

1.Finish character cut-out notes – this is the activity that will be done for their book projects too 🙂

2.Read “All Summer in a Day” pages 68-74 – I read just a small bit to get their interest peaked.

Students began to write their SUMMATIVE argumentative essay on handwriting v. typing. They will have until the end of class tomorrow to finish it.

HOMEWORK: The first book check in for the capstone project will be MONDAY. They need TWO books read by then.

6th Grade

Due to the field trip I did not see 3rd hour and due to the shortened class period, 6th hour had a VERY intense Jenga tournament. Congratulations to Larissa, Malak, Lilly, and Sydney for having a game that lasted 25 minutes long and was STILL going when I made them clean up!

JOURNAL: Phunny Stuph #1 – – Florida Coast

Copy the following passage and then fix the errors.

While fishing off the florida coast a tourist capsized his boat.  Cuz of his fear of alligators he was afraid to swim ashore.  Clinging to the overturned boat he saw a man standing on the shore.  He yelled, “are there any alligators around here? The man yelled back, “no they haven’t been around here for years.” Feeling safe the tourist started swimming calmly toward shore.  About halfway there he yelled back at the man on shore.  “how did you get rid of the alligators?”  “we didn’t do anything,” the man called back.  “the sharks got them all.”

Parent/Teacher Conferences are TONIGHT from 4-7. 4-6 are drop in and 6-7 are scheduled appointments.

8th Grade

JOURNAL:  Would You Rather – – do your own stunts in an action movie or have a stunt person do them?  Explain.

1.  Finish articles

2. Complete your 4-square notes from the 3 articles that you read.

HOMEWORK:  5 school days until the first book (2) check in. Your notes must be dome when you walk through the door.

6th Grade

JOURNAL:  Deed – – In the end, which “good deed” should earn Heather her badge, reading to Miss Benson or becoming Risa’s friend?  Explain.

1.Discuss and compare PFAST diagrams with another group – opposite to your own.

2.TDA Questions:

a.Based on what you just read, explain what the narrator has learned from this childhood experience.

b.One of the theme’s of the story is to not judge a book by its cover.  Use the text to explain how this is true.

HOMEWORK:  Finish questions at home – on the back of the PFAST. The story is in Google Classroom 🙂

JOURNAL: School – – Students should never be forced to repeat a year at school.  Pick a side and explain.

Today the 8th graders participated in a presentation with Dr. DeSouza about “Mindfulness”. Specifically, that there are four pillars for success: Belonging, purpose, transcendence, and story telling. Ask your student about it tonight!

6th Grade

JOURNAL:  SNOW DAY – – In an effort to not miss valuable days of instruction, the State of Michigan is considering to pass a law that says for every snow day that we have, we will have to make that day of school up on a Saturday.  If a student skips Saturday makeups, they will be held back a grade.  Argue why this is good or bad for education (and breathe!  This is NOT true).
