Halloween

River Oaks Halloween Information

On Thursday, October 31st, students will be allowed to bring costumes to school.  Students will not be able to wear their costumes during the morning, but may put them on in the afternoon prior to our Halloween Parade at 2:15 PM.  Weather permitting, we will walk around the neighborhood of the school during the parade and then have time for class parties.  Parents are welcome to participate in the parade around the neighborhood, but must check into the office first in order to obtain a visitor’s pass. If it rains the parade will be around the inside of the school.

Notes about costumes:

PLEASE DO NOT WEAR COSTUMES TO SCHOOL. Instead, bring your labeled costume in a bag, with your student’s name on it.  Students will be able to change into their costumes in the afternoon. Students may NOT dress up as anything that contains, bloody looking, or would be considered scary for younger students who may be frightened by these costumes. Weapons or toys that resemble weapons are NOT permitted. Most classrooms will have their parties at 2:45 – 3:15, please check your classroom teacher’s blog for more information.

We will also be learning about weight and capacity measurements and relating the units to place value.

Writing

Both 2nd and 3rd grade are working on using the writing process to create a fictional narrative piece about our stuffed animal superheroes. We will be using science to defeat Super villains.

We are working on using our senses to add details and interesting words to our writing to make it come alive. We are also working on using transitional words so our story flows sequentially.

Science

2nd grade is learning about properties of matter such as hardness, absorbency, flexibility, and texture. We will also be learning about the states of matter.

3rd grade is focusing on forces. Forces are pushes and pulls. We will be discovering how engineers use their understanding of forces to build bridges. We will also be experimenting with friction by making a model slide to test different materials.

Social Studies

2nd Grade is learning about communities, types of communities, and why people live in communities.

3rd Grade is studying the geography of Michigan. We are learning about the regions of Michigan and the natural and human characteristics that make up Michigan.
