Hope to see you there!

Spelling Words for the Week of 9/10

This week we continue our study of CVC (consonant-Vowel-Consonant) words with the short sound of e, o, and u. These sounds are tricky and students need to listen closely to here the sound each vowel makes. I am sending home 6 words that follow our pattern and 4 sight words. I will also give 5 familiar words that follow the pattern that we have not specifically studied in order to see if they are able to apply the pattern. Each test will have 15 words. I also give a bonus word that is worth extra credit.

Here are the words:

  • top
  • not
  • pet
  • ten
  • tub
  • cut
  • every
  • went
  • are
  • was

Please encourage your child to neatly and correctly form their letters and use lowercase letters only unless otherwise specified, such as a name.

Here are some videos to help.

Help! Book Fair is Almost Here!

Book Fair is next week during school hours. Your child will have the opportunity to browse and make a list of possible books to purchase on one day. On another day, the students who want to buy books can take their money and shop. The books are very reasonable and I strongly encourage families to take this opportunity to get some awesome books that kids want to read. Just remember to send enough money to cover the cost of the book and SALES TAX (6%). So if a book costs $5, you will need to send $5.30 to cover the price of the book and tax.

In order that your child has an opportunity to shop for books, we desperately NEED your HELP! Ms. Sandi needs parents to work the Book Fair and help kids make their lists and find books. If you can spare even 1-2 hours for even just one day Monday-Thursday that would be fantastic! Volunteering at the Book Fair not only helps your child, but ALL of River Oaks students!

If you are available to help, please contact Ms. Sandi at 827-6750.

We can’t do this without you!

Teacher Cadet

Greetings! I would like to take this opportunity to introduce to you Madison Hughley. Madison is a student at Dearborn High and is participating in the Teacher Cadet program. She will be working in our class every day from 1:30-2:30 or longer when possible. Her goal is to learn what being a teacher is all about. She will be working with a variety of students. She will be meeting with small groups,  individuals, and occasionally whole group leading activities that either I or we have prepared. I am very excited to open up our classroom and have her experience our wonderful class! The students have already met her and are eager to work with her.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back! I am so excited to have the opportunity to teach your child this year. A brief class handbook and emergency card form went home yesterday or today with your child in their green River Oaks folder. Parents, Thank you to all who have already completed and returned them. If you haven’t done so yet, please do so as soon as possible.

Picture Day is Tuesday, September 4. That is next week! If you want to purchase pictures please complete the form, enclose payment and return to school by Picture Day.

We go to Phys. Ed tomorrow for the first time so remember to wear your gym shoes!

We are going to have a great year!

NWEA Testing Tomorrow

We will be taking the Reading portion of the NWEA test tomorrow morning. Please make sure that your child is well rested and has had a healthy breakfast to help them focus and perform to the best of their abilities. We will be taking the test at 9:00 AM. Students are encouraged to take their time and to read the text and the question carefully. I will incorporate breaks if needed. Please encourage your child to do their best.

Spelling words for 5/21

This week we are studying suffixes added to root words. Suffixes are endings that change the form of the word.

  • The suffix -ful means “full of” , so “careful” means “full of care” and “joyful” means “full of joy.”
  • The suffix -able means “capable of,” or “fit for.” Hence, the word “washable” means able to be washed.
  • The suffix -ness means “the state of”. It turns adjectives into nouns, such as, darkness, goodness.
  • The suffix -ly turns adjectives into adverbs which describe verbs or actions. For example: He is slow. Slow is describing he. He moves slowly. Slowly is describing how he moves.

The words this week are:

  • friendly
  • careful
  • coldness
  • walkable
  • likely (means probably)
  • helpful
  • kindness
  • washable
  • slowly
  • truthful
  • awareness
  • likeable
  • proudly
  • greatness
  • thankful

The test will be THURSDAY.

Field Trip Tomorrow

Tomorrow is our field trip to the Dearborn Historical Museum. We will be leaving at about 9:15 and returning by 11:30. It is a short trip but very interesting! We will be back for lunch, so no need to pack anything special (unless you want to). The rest of our day will follow our regular schedule of Math, Reading, and Spelling.

Thank you to Mrs. Arafat, Ms. Abouchahine, and Mrs. Wady for volunteering. Chaperones, please arrive and check-in at the office by 9:00.

Everybody please wear comfortable shoes and weather appropriate clothing. We will be inside most of the time and it is un-air-conditioned. (Historical buildings, you know!)

Remember kids – shorts and skirts need to be close to the knee and no spaghetti straps. Straps need to be 2-3 adult fingers wide. Sleeveless shirts are ok as long as you can’t see inside the shirt through the arm hole.

Ramadan

With Ramadan upon us, please be sure to complete a survey that went home letting me know whether your child will be fasting or not. There has been some confusion the last couple days, so I have sent a note home to hopefully clear up any misunderstandings so that I can support your child with following your wishes. The options on the survey are:

  • Yes, my child is fasting.
  • Yes, my child is trying to fast, but may break it if they feel unwell or are unable to perform academically.
  • No, my child is not fasting.

Students who are fasting will still need to participate fully in all curricular/academic activities. We have a lot of instruction left to do before summer break including several district mandated assessments.

For all those who are observing Ramadan, I wish you a blessed and peaceful Month.

Ramadan Mubarak.
