We have been working on adding 2 digit and 2 digit numbers with regrouping, as well as, 3 digit and 2 digit numbers with regrouping using the vertical algorithm and place value drawings. This week we are introducing subtraction of 2 digit numbers with regrouping (unbundling/exchanging/decomposing/borrowing). Please see the videos below and refer to the Homework Helper that is sent home with every Homework.
I hope you enjoyed your time with your student over break. I missed them greatly and found myself thinking of them often! We have a truly amazing group of students this year. They couldn’t wait to share with their classmates and I all the highlights of their vacation. Thank you so much for thinking of me this holiday season with all the wonderful gifts you shared with me. I am truly lucky to teach your student.
Here are a few of this week’s highlights.
NWEA testing for Reading and Math will be happening over the next few weeks. A schedule is being made and I will share our testing times as soon as I know. Please encourage your child to take their time and do their best. Encourage them to read the directions/problem carefully and to make sure that their answers make sense. On test days, don’t forget to have your child eat a healthy breakfast including protein, such as yogurt or eggs, to help their brain function at its best!
Parents, please read and SIGN the planner DAILY. All students record all homework and notes about events in their planners every day. Encourage your child to use their planner as a To-Do list and reminder of what homework they need to do. You can also use the planner as a tool to ask about your child’s day. Any unfinished classwork is sent home at least weekly on the “Return to School” side of the green folder. Any work on that side, must be completed and returned to school. If you are unsure about work needing to be done or not, feel free to write a note in the planner asking about it, or just have them complete it and return it. It’s always good practice!
Green folders- Parents, please go through your child’s folder DAILY. Homework and unfinished work is sent home on a DAILY basis. Corrected work is returned at least once per week, and is place on the “Keep at Home’ side of the folder. Please look through these papers as it will give you insight into what your child is doing in class and their strengths and weaknesses. Also all notes regarding school policies and events will be on that side also.
Subject
Focus
Reading
We are practicing retelling narrative stories, especially folk tales, using the story elements and transitional words. The elements are: characters, setting, problem, plot (events/action), solution, lesson/moral.
Writing
We are working on narrative stories and including all of the story elements as well as creating an exciting opening and a satisfying ending.
Spelling
We are working on the “er”, “ir”, and “ur” spelling patterns. Words are: first, shirt, chirp, term, clerk, curve, surf, burst, hurt, were.
Math
We are continuing to learn new strategies to solve 2 digit addition and subtraction problems. This week we are practicing compensation for subtraction, and decomposing/making a 10 for addition.
Science
We are wrapping up our land forms/ earth changes unit. We are focusing on fast and slow changes such as erosion, and natural disasters.
Social Studies
We are exploring how people affect their communities and that many actions have positive and negative consequences.
I will be posting more about our math strategies and spelling tomorrow.
Our Module 3 test will be Monday, December 10. It will cover writing numbers in standard form, unit form, word form, and expanded form. Students also will draw numbers using place value disks. Students will have to show skip counting between two numbers using 10’s and hundreds using either a number line or as a series of numbers with commas. Students will also have to compare numbers given in different forms using <,>, and =. Students have had multiple homework assignments and problem sets on each of these topics. All homework assignments have been corrected and returned for you to review with your student. A short review will be sent home on Friday. I will post answers to it Friday evening so that you can review it over the weekend.
Here is quick glance of what we will be learning about this week.
Spelling
Ending digraphs – th, ch, sh, tch. Words are: path, hitch, patch, wish, teeth, tooth, dash, wash, never, long
Writing
Informational paragraph writing. Students will write a topic sentence, gather 3 facts from an article, and write a closing sentence.
Reading
Informational text. Students are looking for the main idea of a multi-paragraph text by re-reading the first and last sentence of each paragraph after reading the text completely.
Science
Students are exploring how water changes the Earth (erosion) and about different bodies of water.
Social Studies
We are continuing our geography unit by creating a map and a a map key of our classroom and then creating an island with different types of land forms and drawing a map of our island.
Math
We are comparing numbers based on place value and +/- 1, +/- 10, +/- 100 of a number using place value strategies.
Thank you for working on letter formation. Our writing is starting to improve. Please keep practicing.
We have been working on basic facts through 20 with our Math Sprints. Students should be using strategies such as Near 10, doubles, doubles +/- 1, +1, +0 to help them solve these problems. Students should be getting about 22 problems done in a minute. When doing Sprints, students should be completing them in order down the page. They should NOT jump around. The Sprints are designed so that each problem builds upon the previous problem or group of problems. This is to encourage looking for patterns and relationships between numbers and problems.
Please contact me at fowlerj@dearbornschools.org if you have any questions.
We will be working on using place value to +/- 1, +/- 10, +/- 100 for any number. We will be using place value discs to help model how the number changes when you change the different units. Students should understand that when +/-1 only the digit in the ones place is changing unless we have to trade up. Same with the digit in the tens place when +/- 10, and again only the digit in the hundreds place changes when +/- 100 unless we have to trade up.
Here are some videos to help you understand the approach we are using.
We are working on comparing and ordering numbers from least to greatest and/or greatest to least using place value. Students are comparing numbers written in different forms such as, standard form, unit form, word form, and expanded form. Students need to be able to compare them with the < (less than),> (greater than), or = (equal) signs, as well as putting them as a list with commas. For instance, 154 < 415 because 415 has more 100’s than 154. Or 252 > 225 because 252 has 5 tens and 225 only has 2 tens. Students should be able to put 3 numbers in order from least to greatest, for example, 154, 225, 252. This becomes trickier when the numbers are given in different forms. If a student is given numbers in different forms, they should first write the number in standard form before trying to compare numbers. For example, if a student is given : 325, 60+400+8, and 35 tens. The student must first write all the numbers in standard form: 325, 468, 350. Now the student can order them from least to greatest: 325, 350, 468.
I hope all of you have a wonderful time over this Thanksgiving break with family and friends. There is NO homework except reading 20 minutes per night. I have discovered that our class loves to help and are quick learners, so give them that odd job whether it’s setting the table, counting potatoes, or organizing/sorting anything! Show them how one or two times and watch them shine! They are big helps in our classroom everyday, so I know they have it in them!
