Math Homework 10.6

Today in class we played a game called, Race to 20. This was a fun game to help us get used to using a numberline to solve math facts.

I sent a copy home with your student. Please play this game tonight with him/her and have them explain the rules.

Here is what you need:

  • game board (supplied)
  • paper clip (supplied)
  • 2 game pieces (either from another game, or Cheerios, M & M’s, buttons, etc.)
  • pencil or pen to use with the paper clip as the spinner.
  • good sportsmanship (positive attitude and kind words)

Rules

  • Put your two game pieces at start (10 on the numberline).
  • Player 1 spins  to decide addition or subtraction. Then player 1 spins for the number of hops to move.
  • Then Player 1 moves his token accordingly.
  • Next Player 2 spins both  spinners and moves his/her piece.
  • The game continues until one player lands on 20.

Things we learned playing the game.

  • There are no “do overs” if we don’t like what we spun.
  • If we are on 0, and we spin subtract, we miss a turn.
  • We say positive words when our partners are frustrated.
  • We are good sports about winning and losing. We don’t make a player feel bad.
  • We play fair and honest.

Enjoy the game. The board and paper clip are yours to keep!

Science Supplies Needed

Tomorrow we will be doing an experiment on insulating properties of materials. Please send to school with your child tomorrow, if possible,:

  • a pair of socks that they can put their hands in. (These will be sent home unharmed).
  • 1-2 EMPTY plastic bottles with screw caps (like from bottled water or pop)

Don’t worry if you do not have an item, we will make due with what we have.sockswater-bottle

Thanks for your help.

Google Classroom is Open!

Today your child brought home a note explaining how to access Google Classroom from home. On it were his/her username and password. Please keep this sheet in a safe place. Please do not allow siblings to access the programs assigned to your second grader.

New this year is a portal available to Dearborn students which then allows them access to the programs provided to them by the district. This portal is called Clever. I have placed a link to this on my blog page under Class Links. Clever can also be accessed through the Dearborn Schools Student Resources page located by clicking on the Resources tab at the top of the district’s homepage.

Please send me a note if you have any difficulty accessing it. I know that a few families do not have access to a computer. Please do not worry. Your child will not be penalized for not doing the assignments online. I will make them a packet with the same assignments that they can turn in weekly.

Parents and families, please be aware that you will receive an email by this weekend asking you to join my Google Classroom as a Guardian.

When guardians join Classroom, they receive regular email summaries for each of their students. Guardians choose the frequency of the emails—daily or weekly—and can unsubscribe at any time.

Guardian email summaries include:

  • Missing work—Work that’s late at the time the email was sent
  • Upcoming work—Work that’s due today and tomorrow (for daily emails) or work that’s due in the upcoming week (for weekly emails)
  • Class activity—Announcements, assignments, and questions recently posted by teachers

This will keep you informed of your student’s homework progress.

Enjoy and happy Googling!

Below are the directions that I sent home.

Accessing Google Classroom

  1. Go to my blog, Mrs. Fowler’s Classroom, at https://iblog.dearbornschools.org/fowlerj/. Please bookmark my blog so that your child can find this site quickly on a regular basis. My blog will be the gateway to many opportunities.
  2. On the side menu under Class Links, click on Clever. This will open up a secure portal for Dearborn students.
  3. Your student will be prompted to sign in with their Google Account/Gmail.
    1. This is your child’s student number@dearbornschools.org. For example if your student’s number is 2003223, then their account is 2003223@dearbornschools.org.
    2. Their password is their birthday in MM/DD/YYYY format. For example if your child’s birthday is July 31, 2016, then their password is 07312016.
  4. A portal will open with several programs that your student has access to through Dearborn Schools. Click on the Classroom This should bring up either my classroom or a selection of classrooms. Please click on Mrs. Fowler’s 2nd Grade.

Is It Lunch Yet?

This is a question that I hear a lot even though I post it on the board every day. And the answer changes depending on which day it is. Our lunch moves around each day because of which specials we have that day. Some days we eat at 11:30 and others not until 12:30. To help with this, every morning children have the opportunity to eat a healthy snack brought from home. A snack is single serving of a healthy food that can be eaten in under 6 minutes.  Students may eat only one snack. We do not have an afternoon snack. Please do not send juice. This is a food only snack. Our class has been doing an excellent job making healthy choices and it shows in their behavior and work!

**Please remember to to help your child pick out a healthy snack every day. Some days it is 4 hours between breakfast and lunch. Kids need a little something to keep their brain and body fueled and operating at peak performance.

Examples of Healthy Snacks

  • fruit (ready to eat)bananas, grapes, apples, etc.
  • raw vegetables like carrots, celery, cucumbers, etc.
  • cheese sticks
  • snack size yogurts (send a spoon)
  • Peanut butter and crackers
  • cheese and crackers
  • crackers like goldfish, Cheez-its, graham crackers, pretzels
  • granola or fruit and grain bars (chocolate chip or drizzle is okay)

Examples of Unhealthy Snacks

  • chips (potato, corn, Doritos)
  • Cheese puffs
  • cookies
  • jello
  • pudding
  • sugary foods
  • chocolate covered anything
  • Poptarts
  • Rice Krispie treats

Math Games

What?! Playing games at school?! That’s right! We have been playing math games to reinforce concepts that we’ve been working on. Playing games helps us to understand the concept because we have to follow the game rules, play fair, and defend our choices by explaining our thinking. Math games help us be problem-solvers as well as teach us skills to be good partners and teammates, like listening, sharing, and taking turns. Games help us learn from our mistakes, and develop strategies and to notice patterns.

Today a few students took home  “Count by 5’s.” Their job is to teach someone at home how to play (the rules are on the back of the board). By teaching someone else, students really have to understand the concept. Math games are a “win-win” in our room.

Parent Tip: If a student is putting down a number, ask them “Why do you think that goes there?” whether they’re correct or not. By asking them that question, they have to think about their decision and explain it. Often they will catch themselves if they are making a mistake. If they don’t, suggest that they count by 5’s and see which number comes before or after. Students have the most difficult counting backwards by 5’s (or thinking about what number comes before). BTW… each row is a separate sequence. The board is not a continuous number pattern.
