This week we are studying suffixes added to root words. Suffixes are endings that change the form of the word.
- The suffix -ful means “full of” , so “careful” means “full of care” and “joyful” means “full of joy.”
- The suffix -able means “capable of,” or “fit for.” Hence, the word “washable” means able to be washed.
- The suffix -ness means “the state of”. It turns adjectives into nouns, such as, darkness, goodness.
- The suffix -ly turns adjectives into adverbs which describe verbs or actions. For example: He is slow. Slow is describing he. He moves slowly. Slowly is describing how he moves.
The words this week are:
- friendly
- careful
- coldness
- walkable
- likely (means probably)
- helpful
- kindness
- washable
- slowly
- truthful
