Please continue to work with your child counting coins. Students need to be able to identify both sides of a coin and know its value. This week we have been counting change up to a dollar. We have also been practicing how to make an amount using the fewest number of coins. Today we introduced how to figure out how much more money we would need to make a dollar starting at a given amount by counting up using the arrow way.
We still have quite a few students still struggling identifying and knowing the correct value of each coin. Please, please, please work with your child on this. Counting money is a necessary skill and it reinforces number concepts such as counting by five’s, ten’s, and one’s as well as building number sense of numbers through 100 by finding different ways to make the same amount and combinations to make 100 (number bonds).
