December 11, 2014

Today in class we began chapter 8 on “Ancient Egypt.” Students “talked to the text” for sections 1 and 2. Then, had to think/pair/share with an elbow partner. We completed the preview activity in our notes and section 2 as well. Don’t forget the “Code of Hammurabi” project is due on Monday, Dec. 15. December 8, 2014

Today we presented our groups 4 empires of Mesopotamia and we completed the report card for each empire on the back of sections 8 and 9. Please be familiar with the achievements of each empire for the test on Wednesday. Here is the study guide if you were absent today. December 5, 2014

Today we looked at the achievements of the Neo-Babylonian Empire and we worked on sections 8 and 9 in our notes. Students had to find a “golden line” as they were skimming sections 8 and 9. We then discussed our golden lines and read the sections. Please start working on the code of Hammurabi project. I posted it on my blog yesterday. It is due Dec. 15. Student were also offered an extra credit opportunity to create a 3-D city-state or to create one on mind-craft. I will be looking for ziggurats, irrigation system, reservoir, social structure, or anything else we learned in chapter 5. The city-state extra credit is due on December 18. Please start studying the chapter 6 vocabulary. I will hand out the study guide on Monday and the test will be on Wednesday of next week.

Today we read about the Assyrian Empire and “talked to the text” for chapter 6 sections 6 and 7. One student pair shared thoughts as the other student wrote down the students comprehension of the section. Students then switched roles for the next section. The key vocabulary for this section were (battering ram, aquaduct, and siege.) Students also had to complete sections 6 and 7 in their notes.
We also discussed the Hammurabi code and his laws. Students were assigned a take home project worth 45 summative points.There is a rubric attached that needs to be turned in with the poster. Students need to have these 4 things on it: 1. a summary of the code 2. a summary of their thoughts on the laws 3. create a list of their own laws if they were a leader of a school and 4. draw a picture of a stele. Today we “talked to the text” in chapter 6 sections 4 and 5. Students were asked to pair/share their text with an elbow partner. We then had a group share out on the key vocabulary for this section. (code of laws, unify, and economy) We identified the achievements of the Babylonian Empire and we completed sections 4 and 5 notes. Please start bringing in post-its or sticky notes we will be using these more frequently.

I hope everyone had a nice thanksgiving break. Today in class, we divided the class into groups and each group was assigned to one of the four empires of Mesopotamia. (The Akkadian, Assyrian, Babylonian, and Neo-babylonian empires.) Students were asked to create a poster and every member was assigned to a task. Students were asked to create a title (name of empire and dates it ruled), re-create a time-line, write a summary, illustrate two drawings of achievements, and list 4 achievements for the empire. We will continue this assignment tomorrow in class. If you were absent today you will be assigned to a group tomorrow.
