Day 1!

Well…..Here we are! The first day of online learning. Our goal over the next few weeks is to keep children engaged in their education so they do not lose the momentum they have gained over this school year. Daily work will help with this goal. It is recommended that they work about 2 hours a day at home to maintain their learning. This two hour time frame is not all in one sitting. Please make sure there are “brain breaks” (ask your child what this is, they love them!) . I send an example of a day yesterday. Each morning a reading and writing assignments are posted on google classroom. They will open at 8am and close at 4pm. Todays is available right now. I am required to contact each family when their children do not complete assignments. Please have your child write the assignments on paper and either video them reading it and send it to me via class dojo or send me a picture of the work. Thank you so much for your support.

Please check Class DoJo daily as that will updated more frequently. Thank you.

Online Learning During COVID19 School Closing

Posted on March 15, 2020 by Amal Chehab

Greetings Oakman Families,

As you are aware, schools are closed until April 13. While this is a necessary measure for everyone’s safety, students are missing valuable instructional time at school. Oakman teachers and teachers across the district will be in constant contact with students in order to provide online and remote learning opportunities. Classroom teachers have already started to post to their blogs, Google Classroom and Class Dojo in order to define the daily learning expectations for every student.

The Oakman community has always played a leading role in how teachers, students and parents work together to put students first. We are now asking parents to ensure that students have access and make time to complete their daily work. Work together with your children and put together a schedule for them to follow. Children thrive when there are set routines and schedules in place.

Although most of the teacher’s daily expectations will be posted online, we are not promoting technology as the only learning resource. We want to stress the importance of keeping screen time to a minimum and allow for hands-on activities, reading books, writing, STEAM activities and playing outdoors if possible.

All teachers will continue to update their Blogs/ Class Dojo and can be reached by email with any questions or concerns.

This is a sample schedule that students can possibly follow. Please also refer to teachers blogs and Class Dojo for scheduling and assignments.

Information for 3/16/20

Schedule for home

Reading with ALL students:

Read at home with your child at least 20 minutes every day with books they enjoy.

Before reading:

  • You may read to your child a text before he or she reads it.
  • Have your child make predictions about what might happen next.
  • Have your child use picture clues from the cover to predict what the book is about.

During reading:

  • Read out loud to your child.
  • Listen to your child read.
  • Echo read (you read a line and then have your child repeat the line).
  • Read together at the same time (choral reading).
  • Reread or retell favorite stories.
  • Talk to your son or daughter about what they are reading.
  • Talk about how the pictures in the book connect to the words on the page.

After reading, you may:

  • Ask “What do you remember from the text?”
  •  Ask questions about the reading (who, what, when, where, why).
  • Have your child talk about his or her favorite parts of the story and why.
  • Ask “What have you learned from the text?”
  • Ask “Who was in the book and what did this character do in the story?”
  • Connect the story to your child’s life or to other books you and your child have read together.

Example for a daily schedule

Math problem (addition and subtraction up to 1000, multiplication and division for 3rd graders)

Read for 20 minutes – talk to someone at home about what you read

Look at the topic for daily writing on google classroom.  Write about it on paper then record it online and send it to me on Class Dojo or take a picture and send it to me.

Edmentum math

Read to someone for 30 minutes.  Write about it and submit it to me through ClassDojo via a picture of your writing or video tape what you have written.

We recommend 30 minutes of screen time daily and 30 minutes of reading daily.  One hour of writing and other academics.

Valentines Day!

Dear Families,                                         February 7, 2020

We will be having our Valentine’s Day party on Thursday February 13th.  Student who would like to bring in Valentine’s Day cards for other students may do so.  If you and your child decide to give cards I ask that one is given to each child and your child fill out the cards with their name and the receivers’ name.  This is good handwriting practice!  Also, if students would like to bring in a bag of candy or treats we will make goody bags.  We have done this in the past and it has worked out very nicely. Thank you to all families who have signed up to bring in supplies for the party.  Your generosity is appreciated!

Student names are listed below.

Lena, Retaj, Ammar, Sakina, Afnan, Mayar, Hend, Slwa, Adam, Souad, Zahraa, Siddiq, Moshal, Muneer, Abdulhamid, Sami, Zeina

Thank you!

Thank you for all of the birthday gifts and birthday wishes! I appreciate you thinking of me.

We will continue with NWEA testing next week. I really encourage you to have your child go onto Study Island daily. If parents had to pay for the Study Island app it would cost $180 per year! Please take advantage of it on Clever, it is being provided by Mr. AbuRus for our students to use daily.
