Report cards

Good evening,
Following is some information on how parents can access report cards data in MIStar ParentConnect and how schools can help parents with login info if parents can’t login. Please note that if a parent uses ParentConnect, he/she should be able to see data for all their students and do not require separate logins for the different schools.

1. How do parents login to ParentConnect? To login to ParentConnect, parents need their PIN and password; below are the steps to gain access To Parent Connect.Option 1 (Screen below – Recommended): Parents go to Dearborn Schools web site then ParentConnect link. If they don’t know the login info, they click (Need Your LoginInformation) link and it will prompt them to enter their email address as provided to the school and entered in MIStar(Menu/Enrollment/Student Editor/Contacts) and click Submit. This process emails them their PIN and Password.

From Ms Southers

Dear Families,

We’re excited to announce that our school community will be participating in the
OPEN National Field Day event on Friday, May 8th

Field Day is an important tradition at our school. It is a significant day for our students and our staff, and we feel that in these incredibly challenging times this national event is a unique way that we can stay connected as a community and support one another in a fun and meaningful way.

OPEN (Online Physical Education Network) is a national public service organization that provides curriculum and training support to more than 90,000 teachers in all 50 states. We will be using their resources and social media network to help us organize our school’s participation in #NationalFieldDay.

All #NationalFieldDay events are designed to be done indoors or outdoors using common household items. You won’t be asked to purchase any specialized equipment or supplies.

Here’s how it will work:▪ Our school is now registered as a participant in this event. Families can choose to register as well, but it’s not a requirement.▪ The event website iswww.openphysed.org/nationalfieldday.▪ As a part of registration, we will receive Field Day Friday email updates each week with new resources that we will share with you.▪ You can also find updates via social media using #NationalFieldDay.▪ By April 17 your family will receive a set of event cards that you can use to begin practicing. You will also receive a participant practice sheet for tracking progress.▪ Your family will be asked to choose a minimum of 4 events to complete on Field Day. However, you may complete as many events as you’d like to.▪ From May 3 thru 7, we will follow #NationalFieldDay and watch the Field Day Torch travel across the country in preparation for the main event.▪ On May 8, our entire school will participate in events, complete an official score card, share photos and videos through our school’s approved platforms, and participatenationally on social media using #NationalFieldDay.▪ After the event, your student will submit their scorecard via Google Drive (or other school approved method) to their physical education teacher.▪ Every student that completes at least 4 events will receive an OPEN National Field Day certificate.

We will continue to send you weekly updates on this fun and festive event. We appreciate your cooperation and are hopeful that your entire family will use it as a fun and meaningful way to be physically active together and with our entire school community.

Stay well,

Ms. Southers

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring week! We had some really nice weather. I spent a lot of time working in my yard. I hope all families continues to be healthy and safe.

Online learning will start up again tomorrow. Daily online learning will remain the same for our class. One writing prompt, one reading reflection, and 20 minutes of online for math (either Zearn or Edmentum). The two writings can be done on paper and a picture of the writing uploaded to google classroom or sent through ClassDoJo. Which ever one is easier for you. Students should be spending about 2 hours a day on homework. This should not be done at one sitting but spread out throughout the morning or day with break in between.

The writing prompts this week are from Slwa and Zahraa! Thank you both for responding to the Google Classroom document asking for your writing prompt suggestions.

Mr. AbuRus wanted us to make sure you know that we are tracking all students who are doing the work and those who are not. The district is asking for a log of the students who or are not completing the work. I have been keeping track but now the logs will be turned int. Again this is new to all of us and we are learning as we go. We will have another online staff meeting tomorrow and I let you know if I learn addition information.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

From Dr. Maleyko

April 2, 2020

Greetings,

Today, Governor Whitmer announced that schools in Michigan will be closed for the reminder of the 2019-20 school year.  We applaud the decision by the Governor to ensure the safety of all Michigan students as we continue to work toward slowing the spread of the COVID-19 virus.  On behalf of the Board of Education and our entire staff, I want to take a moment to thank and express our appreciation to all of the health care professionals and first responders who have been working on the front lines to treat those affected by this virus.

To summarize the Governor’s official, seventeen page order, here are a few key points:

  • All public school buildings will be closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.
  • All school districts must develop a plan for continued on-line/distance learning.
  • Seniors will be allowed to graduate and students will move to the next grade assuming they are on track to graduate, have met standards, and/or will show they have met standards over the next several weeks via online learning or other methods.
  • Assessments are waived (SAT, PSAT, M-Step). Students who were scheduled to take the SAT this spring will have an opportunity to take the SAT which may occur in the fall.
  • Food distribution programs will continue.
  • The state will continue to provide school aid payments allowing districts to pay staff regular wages/salary and benefits for the remainder of the school year.

We are still reviewing all of the details in the Governor’s order and awaiting further direction from the Michigan Department of Education.  However, our administrative team has already started developing a distance learning plan that will be submitted to our local Intermediate School District (ISD) as required by the Governor’s order.  Approval by the ISD will ensure the remainder of the school year will count for the District and that we will continue to receive our school aid budgetary payments. A key component in the Governor’s order is that students need to participate in distance learning or other forms of continued learning that is provided by the district.  Items related to specific students or a specific grade level will be addressed at the school level in coordination with the direction taken by central office leadership. Principals and teachers will provide that information as it becomes available.

We understand that this order has created many more questions, especially for our seniors. We will continue to have discussions with regard to how we will honor our graduation class of 2020. I have a meeting scheduled with the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council on Friday and this will be part of the discussion. In addition, the Board of Education will provide direction and will appoint a committee to acquire student, parent, and community input.

We were hopeful that students would be able to return to the classroom, at least for a short time, to bring closure to the school year. Unfortunately, the number of COVID-19 cases is predicted to increase over the next few weeks which has eliminated that option in accordance with the Governor’s order. We will continue to be optimistic for the future while we make plans that address the realistic conditions we are currently facing.

Our state is still under a mandatory Shelter in Place order by the Governor. This means that in order to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus, and support the efforts of those who are on the front lines dealing with this serious situation, we must all do our part and remain in our homes. Our short-term sacrifices now will help to prevent an even longer shut down later; “Stay Home Stay Safe”.

I have witnessed the great work by our staff, parents, students, and community members as we deal with the COVID-19 crisis.  I want to especially thank our outstanding Teachers and Administrators for the great work they are doing to support our students. In addition, I want to recognize the heroic effort of our Food Service staff, the PTA volunteers, and Operations staff for the distribution of thousands of meals over the past several weeks. We are a strong and resourceful community and I am so very proud to see how we have come together to support each other through this very difficult time.  I want to close by saying that we all need to remain hopeful and know that we will get through this. Take care of your family and take care of yourself.

Please be safe and stay healthy,

Glenn Maleyko, Ph.D.

Superintendent

Sunday Update

For the families on Instagram there is a site with celebrities reading books for kids. It’s kind of like storyline online but much more casual. I thought it was great and wanted to share it with you.

Instagram – #Savewithstories

I hope everyone is doing well as we go into week 3 of online learning. Thank you for all of your support. I have been commenting on students writing in Google Classroom but I think I was supposed to return the doc in order for students to see what I wrote! This has all been a big learning experience for all of us. I also realized today that some students had done their work but because they never “turned in” I didn’t know it was completed. Again, we are all learning as we go.

This week will be formatted like the last two. Respond to two google classroom assignments a day (a picture emailed to me or imbedded in the google doc is fine), and spend around 20 minutes a day on Edmentum Math or Zearn.

I really encourage families to limit screen time everyday. Up to 30 minutes doing school work and no more than an hour for pleasure. Screen time includes phone, tablet, laptop, desktop, video games, and television.

Thank you and I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy!

Dearborn Schools offering free breakfast and lunch pickup for students at six sites

Dearborn
Public Schools is offering free pickup lunch and breakfast for students while
school is closed for the mandatory shut down over the next three weeks.

Families
will be able to stop in and pick up a bag with both breakfast and lunch for
each child in the family.  Pickups will
run daily from 10 a.m. to noon starting tomorrowMarch 17 at Fordson, Edsel
Ford and Dearborn high schools, McCollough-Unis, Salina Intermediate, and
Woodworth Middle School.

Signage
at each site will direct parents and students where to enter the building. Food
will be near entrances to minimize the amount of time community members spend
in the facilities.

Please
note, meals are available to anyone age 18 and younger.  Students do not need to be present, and the
Dearborn School student does not need to attend at that building.  A designated person can collect meals for
multiple children.  Meals for Saturday
and Sunday can be picked up on Friday.

The
program will allow the District’s 20,700 students to continue to have access to
healthy food.  Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last
week ordered all Michigan schools closed from March 16 through April 3 to slow
the spread of novel coronavirus and cases of COVID-19.  Dearborn Schools is scheduled for spring
break April 6 to 10, so school will not resume in the District until April 13.

The
grab-and-go meals will be served at least through April 3.

Superintendent
Glenn Maleyko praised the District’s food service team for quickly implementing
this drastic change in service to meet the needs of families.

“We
appreciate the patience of our families and community as we all try to adjust
to this sudden change from closing schools,” Dr. Maleyko said.  “More than three quarters of our students
qualify for free or reduced priced school meals.  We realize this food is important to our
families, many of whom may be facing additional financial hardships from the
sudden economic changes related to COVID-19.”

Check the Dearborn Public Schools website at http://www.dearbornschools.org for any updates or changes to the meal program or for other issues regarding the school closure.
