Food Distribution this summer

For the second year in a row, Dearborn Public Schools plans to continue distributing free student meals over the summer vacation.

On Thursday, June 24, the district will start its summer meal distributions.  Families of students can pick up food for each of their children on Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Meals will be distributed at the district’s three traditional high schools – Dearborn, Edsel Ford and Fordson.  This student food distribution program will continue through August 12.

The district will also serve meals to elementary and middle school students participating in our free in-school summer programs.

Families picking up summer meals at the high school distribution sites will be offered either a three-day bag of food, if their child is attending the four-day-a-week summer program, or a seven-day bag of food for those not in the summer program.

Salina Intermediate will also distribute food on Thursdays as part of the summer meal program, but only three-day packs will be available at that location.  The Salina distribution will run from 12:30 to 2 p.m. each Thursday.

Food distribution is available for any student or child under 18 years of age. No ID is required, and the student does not need to attend that building or come with the adult picking up the food.

Dearborn Public Schools starts the new school year on Aug. 30 and currently plans to have students back in school for full days every day. That means once the new school year starts most kindergarten through 12th grade students will be able to receive breakfast and lunch at school.  At that time, the district will discontinue its broad weekly meal distribution program.

Dearborn Schools offers free lunch and breakfast to all its students through the Community Eligibility Provision under the National School Lunch Program.

For this school year, June 16 will be the last weekly food distribution at our 10 current locations.  The last day of school is June 18.  The following week, the summer meal distribution program starts, and distributions move to Thursdays at the three high school locations and Salina Intermediate.

Dearborn Public Schools began distributing free student meals just days after the pandemic forced schools to close in March 2020. Since then, the district has distributed more than 4 million free meals for students.

“We are glad to be able to provide food for our students and families, many of whom we know struggled financially even before the pandemic caused an upheaval in the economy,” said Superintendent Glenn Maleyko. “With the expected return of in-school learning next school year, we look forward to educating – and feeding – our students in our schools once again.”

Class Picnic Tuesday June 15!

As of 6/4/21 2:57p.m. Picnic Information

Today Group B received an informational paper on our class picnic. Group A will receive this paper on Monday. I have posted a picture in Class DoJo.   The school had to submit a very specific (covid safe) plan for approval to the district to allow for an end of the year picnic.  We were granted the approval!  We really want to follow the instructions to the tee to keep everyone safe.

Our class picnic will be Tuesday June 15th at 10:00a.m.  – 1:00 p.m.

Students should not bring lunches, books or backpacks on this day.

Group B will come into class at 9:30 like they always do on Tuesday.

Group A students should  be dropped off at the big playground.  We will be outside waiting for them to join us at 10:00 a.m.

The picnic will last until 1:00.  Parents are to pick up their child at 1:00.  If your child is in group B and you would like them to stay until 2:20, they are welcome to.

The $5 charge will help defray the cost of the pizza, snack water bottle, and hot dog lunch each child will receive.

Students are not allowed to wear open toed shoes.  We will be playing games on the playground and open toed shoes are not safe.  Also, if your child is used to wearing a hat, sunscreen, or sunglasses please feel free to let them wear those items to school if it is sunny out on that day.

Thank you.  If I hear anything else I will let you know.  Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  If I cannot answer them I will ask Mr. AbuRus!

NWEA

I’ve received a few questions about NWEA for the Spring. Last week we started practice NWEA. It’s called a screener. Students can ask me questions and I can help read or guide them to solve a question. Starting Monday may 17 we will start to take the official tests. If students go onto Edmentum daily it will help prepare them for the test. Thank you.

Update for Monday 4/26/21

Good Afternoon! I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful day.
Tomorrow for Benchmark we start a new book. It is the Buyers and Sellers book. For math we start a new unit also, It is module 4. These are the books students should have in their backpacks for the week. Please remember all students should be on zoom at 8:30a.m. Last Friday there were 5 students who did an outstanding job on Zoom in the morning. They were Naya, Hanine, Omar, Nagham, and Rawan. When I say they did an outstanding job I mean they were ready to learn and were activite participants! On Thursday and Friday I introduce a lesson on Zoom and we practice that skill. See everyone in the morning!
