Week of January 30th

Dear Snow Parents,

Snow Elementary is committed to fostering an inclusive environment for our students with and without disabilities. As part of our efforts to support students with disabilities we have developed a program to promote awareness.

Peer Pals is dedicated to building relationships between general education students and students with special needs.  This program allows general education students to develop empathy and understanding of differing abilities. It allows for students with special needs to build friendships with same age typically developing peers. Some students will be paired in social/academic activities with a peer pal.  Student participation is voluntary.

PTA Meeting Reminder!
Please join the PTA tonight at 5pm in the Media Center to discuss the changes to the Annual Snow Picnic (now carnival) that will be taking place in May this year. We’d like to get some feedback and share what we have in mind. We are also looking for volunteers to help us make this new Carnival a success! Then stay for our February PTA meeting at 6pm where we will go over many items and upcoming events such as Book Bingo, Book Fair, etc. Look forward to seeing everyone there! Thank you!

Week of January 9th

Hi to all!!

We had a great two days of practice in Chess Club.  The members still need to work on strategies.  We do have a new member which I would like to welcome to our Club. She is a 5th grader from Mr. D’s class.

Next week, I will be sending home field trip permission slips for our first tournament which will be coming up February 7th.  I need all parents to drive if we can not transport our players then we would have to forfeit our match which means a loss for us.  Please make sure you have given to Michelle our School Secretary a copy of your Registration of your car, a copy of your drivers license and proof of insurance.  I truly appreciate all the trouble you are going through to help me.  Thanks and have a great weekend.

Week of December 19th

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our Winter Break Party.  We had a lot of fun making pancakes.  I hope everyone has a safe and restful Winter Break.  I am looking forward to a wonderful 2017 with your child.  Please read the information below written by Mrs. Zechar our Art Teacher.  Again thank you for allowing us to work with a great group of students.

Hello, Snow School Community!!!   Our Lobby will soon become a “Wolf Den”.  Students will be making trees, rocks, etc., to enhance our space. We are looking for any artificial trees that might get thrown out after the holidays. Any tree- big, small, tiny, medium, fat, skinny, etc., is eligible. Please let us know if you have one or if someone you know does. Ms. Zechar can pick them up or you can drop them off at school. Questions? Please email Ms. Zechar at zecharj@dearbornschools.org or call school, 313-827-6250, and she will get back to you.   Spread the word.   Tons of thanks!!

Calling all shovelers!

Let it snow!!!

As part of Snow Elementary Leader In Me Program, we are asking you, our fabulous students, to reach out in our community to help others.  If you’d like to be a part of the Snow Shoveling Club, simply volunteer to shovel a neighbor’s, relatives or your very own driveway and sidewalk.  Please be sure to have a parent with you and get permission of the community member before shoveling.  You are giving back to the community, so please offer to do this free of cost.

Each time you shovel someone’s snow, color a square on the chart sent home.  Once you have helped 5 members in the community, please return the chart to Mrs. Grizzell for acknowledgement of your leadership and kindness.

Thank you!

Week of December 12th

I hope everyone enjoyed their snow day on monday.  We have been talking about how the African Americans celebrate their holiday Kwanzaa.  We also went to Life Town for the first time this school year.  It was fun for all and we loved eating pizza.  Thank you to all for allowing this wonderful experience occur.  Thank you for all who attended our field trip to life town.  We have a great time and everyone acted like ladies and gentlemen.  I was so proud of everyone.

Please read the following:

This month, our special education staff discussed with our students the importance of Person First Language. When we are communicating with and about people with disabilities, we should always use Person First Language. This form of language places emphasize on the person, NOT the disability.  All people have individualized goals, interests, and abilities, whether they have a disability or not. Person First Language allows us to look at these individual characteristics rather than the disability. An example of Person First Language is “child with autism” rather than “autistic child.” Raising awareness for this type of language will ensure that ALL students feel comfortable and valued at our school.
Stay warm and have a great weekend
