Sept 30

Welcome to my blog.  Already it’s been more than 2 weeks and by now I expect students to arrive in class on time and prepared with all their supplies necessary for the class. They should be using a folder with pockets for math and science where they are to keep their homework, tests and any other worksheets we’ve been working on.  I have extra folders if they ask.  They should also have an interactive notebook, a pencil case or box with pencils, glue, markers or colored pencils, and a sharpener.  Students will not be allowed to go to their lockers to retrieve items.

Field trip information.   We will be going to Greenfield Village on November 28th with the whole 7th grade.  We are hoping to get a number of parents to help chaperone. (Chaperones are free)  greenfield-village-permission-slip-1 greenfield-village-permission-slip-2   Money and slips are due Oct 7th.  If you plan to chaperone, please go to the office at Woodworth to fill out the proper papers. It takes about 7-10 for the approval to go through, so please don’t wait too long.  Then you’re good for the whole year!!!

SCIENCE:   Students received their Matter Science Books.  We begin the year with learning about the scientific method and how to set up an experiment.  In class we will do some activities that will have students making qualitative and quantitative observations and we’ll read about experiments and how to set them use using control factors and variables.

The ISN should have:

Title page with your name, Ms. Dowgiallo’s name, rom 224, 7th grade and your number.

Table of Contents pages numbered to 100

Book is number 1A, 1B,    2A, 2B …… to the end of the book.

Pg 1A/1B are vocabulary words on foldables.    Scientific method, experiment, variable, analyze, data, theory, hypothesis, qualitative, quantitative, results, observation, inference

pg 2A is the “Boy in the Water” worksheet and your justifications are on pg 2B

Pg 3A is your WS of observations and you wrote down a logical inference.

In the back of the ISN, students wrote down the expectations about the biweekly science articles where they answer questions and complete a 3,2,1.  When the assignment is given out, the due date is announce then, which I will give students 2 weeks to complete. These are interesting articles about science topics to help students gain some background knowledge about our world around us.  It will help improve their reading and writing skills along with learning new vocabulary words.  Maybe they’ll learn about a scientist or area of science that they didn’t know existed and they’ll want to research and find out more.  Maybe someone in my class will be the next famous NASA scientist, archeologist, microbiologist  or paleontologist.  The sky is the limit!

Students also do a daily bellwork which I collect every week.  They copy the question from the board and answer the question using 3-5 complete sentences.  Then we discuss it.  They are allowed, and encouraged, to add to their answer so that it is complete and correct before I collect it on Friday.

MATH:

We are working on 2 concepts.  The first is in our Numeracy Unit and the other Equations.   Besides the initial preparedness of our ISNs, like table of contents, title page, numbering pages, we’ve also begun filling out ISN.  Page 1A and 1B is the Common Core Standards.  2A and 2B is our number line with notes about absolute value.  (QUIZ for this will be on Monday Oct 3rd).  On 3A and B we started discovering integer patterns using double colored chips.  This week coming up we will be learning the rules for add and subtracting intergers using chips and numberline.

Besides working with integers, we have begun our unit on Pre-algebra starting with translating words into algebraic expressions and equations.  This is the homework sheet that is due on Oct 3  oct-3-translating-expressions

Bellwork is done on a daily basis and there will be a weekly quiz on the concepts learned.  They have already taken 2 quizzes (check parent/student connect) and they will have another on on Monday Oct 3 about rounding decimals.

STUDENTS KNOW HOW TO REDO A TEST.  The procedure I use is in the last page of their ISN.  Ask them about their quizzes and what they plan to do to retake it.   I want everyone to do well in math class. I encourage them to come in for help any morning.  I am usually here before 7:00.  I also stay afterschool, but when November rolls around, after school will not be an option because Academic Games begins and I am the coach for Woodworth.

Students and Parents, feel free to contact me anytime..I plan to have a GREAT year!!!
