News From the Jungle

Please be sure to put your child on reading eggs and math seeds each night. It can be for just 10 minutes per night, but it will greatly improve their reading, writing, and math. You could do 10 minutes of reading eggs on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Then do 10 minutes of math seeds on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday or Sunday. Feel free to do more than 10 minutes if your schedule allows! These programs really are beneficial for the growth and development of your child!

If you misplaced your child’s login and need the information again, please email me at dimitrm@dearbornschools.org

Agenda for the Week

Reading and Writing:  We worked on recognizing and writing the letter G and the letter T. We learned the sound of each letter and practiced identifying objects that begin with each letter sound. Please continue to help your child correctly hold a pencil and form each letter.

We completed a retelling of The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything. The children loved this story and were able to sequence the events which took place. Ask your child to retell this story to you, using the sequence map they brought home on Wednesday.

We worked on our writing this week and focused on beginning the sentence with an uppercase (capital letter), having finger spaces between words, and ending the sentence with a period. We have also been working to identify periods, question marks, and exclamation marks (excited mark) while reading. Here is a fun video about parts of a sentence:

I began teaching the children about verbs this week. We practiced all week long. The children learned that an verb is an action word. We completed several worksheets and practiced identifying verbs within sentences. Here is the verb video we use to help support our learning:

We also reviewed that an adjective is a describing word. Here is our adjective video:

We also reviewed that a noun is a person, place, thing, or animal. Here is our noun video:

The link to  create name tracers is also great for creating sight word tracers for your child.

If you would like to create tracing pages for your child, visit the website below:

https://www.handwritingworksheets.com/flash/printdots/singleword/index.html

Directions: Scroll down until you see a gray rectangle which says, “Step 1: Enter student name, then type your child’s name in the first box and the second one which says, “word” OR type in sight words. Choose the size you would like, size 2 or size 3 are best. Then click print.

Here are some videos we use in class to help with letter recognition and letter sound identification:

Math: We practiced recognizing, writing and representing numbers 15 and 16. We continued working with 2D and 3D shapes. We will do a quick assessment next week on these shapes where the students will have to cut and sort 2D and 3D shapes.

We have been working on subitizing. This is the ability to recognize a number or quantity at first sight. It might be fingers, tally marks, dots in a ten frame, or different objects to represent a number. Here are a few videos we use in class:

We also practiced counting by 5’s we have been working on this little by little when we make tally marks on our morning work and during math workshop. Below find a video to help your child learn how to count by 5’s:

Here are a few videos we use in class:

Science: We did a little experiment with push and pull. The children enjoyed making predictions about things we push and pull and how fast a toy car could go on a flat service, smooth elevated surface, and bumpy surfaces. We also used a pendulum and “pulled” it to set it in motion and discovered different objects it could knock over. The children also participated in a simple magnet experiment. These hands on activities were a big hit!

Social Studies: We continue learning how to be a good friend and student. We review our rules and procedures daily. We are wrapping up our citizenship unit and will be moving on to needs and wants.

We are still working hard at trying to win the lunchroom challenge. The children must stay in their seat, raise their hand if they need help, and clean up after themselves. After talking with the lunch moms, they said our group is struggling with cleaning up after themselves. Please reinforce this skill at home and help them become independent with cleaning up their own messes!

Thank you PTA for our lovely pumpkins!

Housekeeping Items:

I know these items have been repeated for a few weeks, but I still need your help in implementing the items below:

Change of Clothes

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE send in a change of clothes for your child. We will keep it in their locker and then if they have a bathroom accident or fall in mud or get wet from the playground, they will have clothes they can change into and we can take care of all that right here at school without having to disturb you at home or at work. Put an extra change of clothes (pants, underwear, shirt, socks, and maybe even an extra pair of shoes) in a bag, labeled with their name on it.

Snack Time

**** Due to a peanut allergy in our room, please do not send in any snacks that contain nuts.*****

Folders

Please make sure to empty the green folders each night! It is very difficult and time consuming to locate homework or important notes when the folder is full of papers from the day before. Remember to initial the communication log and feel free to add any notes to me!

PBIS Bingo

Dear Families,

On Tuesday, October 24 we will be having a PBIS celebration to recognize your child’s positive behavior. This month’s celebration will be BINGO. The entire building will be playing BINGO in our classrooms at the same time!  The top three winners of each game will receive a small prize, but the celebration is about participating in a fun activity as a building.

Thank you,

Haigh PBIS Committee

News From the Jungle

Agenda for the Week

Reading and Writing:  We worked on recognizing and writing the letter F and the letter U. We learned the sound of each letter and practiced identifying objects that begin with each letter sound. Please continue to help your child correctly hold a pencil and form each letter.

We completed a R.A.N strategy on bats. The children were read books about bats and we pulled out the key details and information to complete our “Can, Have, Are” paper and to complete our learning about what we thought we knew about bats and new facts we learned along the way. The children labeled a bat and also asked friends if they like bats (yes or no) and then graphed it. The children also worked on comparing with tally marks and graphing and asked 10 friends which they liked best, spiders or bats. Here is pictures of our completed work hanging in the hallway:

I began teaching the children about adjectives this week. We practiced all week long. The children learned that an adjective is a describing word. We completed several worksheets and practiced identifying adjectives within sentences. Here is the adjective video we use to help support our learning:

Math: We practiced recognizing, writing and representing numbers 13 and 14. We continue talking about shapes and began learning about 3D shapes.

This week we completed a CER (claim, evidence, reasoning) about “How many dinosaurs are in lake?” There was a picture of dinosaur feet under water. The children had to think about how many legs belong to a dinosaur. Then they had to try to figure out how many dinosaurs were in the lake. This was a great way to get us counting and get the kids talking to each other about math.

We continue talking about place value through counting the days of the year and learning that numbers in the teens start with a one.

Here are a few videos we use in class:

Science: We began talking about push and pull. We also wrapped up talking about different body parts and participated in skeleton centers. The children traced their bodies and added in the bones, labeled a skeleton, completed a dot-to-dot skeleton from numbers 1 – 29, made bones with play-doh, sorted and graphed Bag of Bones Cheetos, and made a skeleton craft with q-tips. The q-tip skeletons are still drying and will come home on Monday. The children had so much fun with these activities! Enjoy the pictures below:

Thank you to all of the parents that came to help with our skeleton centers. We could not have had a successful rotation without you! If you are interested in helping with projects, crafts, and parties in the future, please email me at dimitrm@dearbornschools.org

Scholastic Book Orders due Tomorrow and Recommendations on Good Fit Books for your Child

Please make sure to get your book orders in tomorrow, so that I can place the order for everyone.

A few parents inquired about good books for beginning readers and to promote sight word acquisition. I have made several recommendations on the Scholastic website. You can see all of the books I suggested on their website under the “recommendations to students” tab.

The following are great books to try with your child to help grow their reading skills (these are just a few examples of the books I suggested on the Scholastic website):

Bob Books –

BOB Books®: Sight Words First Grade Box Set

BOB Books® First Stories Box Set

Phonics book sets – which come in all the latest popular characters from Lego, Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and much more.

Batman Phonics Fun! Box Set

Pete the Cat Phonics Box Set

Disney Learning: Frozen Phonics Box Set

These box sets are a great way to introduce your child to the world of reading and offer them books at their own reading level!

Agenda for the Week

Reading and Writing:  We worked on recognizing and writing the letter E and the letter V. We learned the sound of each letter and practiced identifying objects that begin with each letter sound. Please continue to help your child correctly hold a pencil and form each letter.

Math: We practiced recognizing, writing and representing numbers 11 and 12. We continue talking about shapes and began learning about 3D shapes. The children had the opportunity to play the interactive game on the Promethean board  that we learned last week.  We discussed different patterns such as AB, AABB, AAB. ABB, ABC pattern sequences. We will continue to work more with patterns and 2D/3D shapes over the next few weeks.

We continue talking about place value through counting the days of the year and learning that numbers in the teens start with a one.

Here are a few videos we use in class:

Science: We began talking about body parts. Later this month the children will be able to experience our “skeleton centers.” The children will take part in many activities to help them learn about the parts of the body.

Social Studies: We continue to discuss and model being a good friend and what it looks like to follow the rules. Students have been earning “hoots.” Hoots are given out when children are being good friends, following directions, etc. The hoot raffle takes place each Monday and the name drawn from the class bucket, gets to choose a prize! We have struggled through the lunchroom challenge and have been receiving triangles. Triangles mean that the students did not follow directions. In order to get on O (positive behavior) and win the lunchroom challenge the children must clean up after themselves, stay in their seat and raise their hand if they need help, as well as use an indoor voice. Please help your child to be successful during lunch time by reinforcing these items and by teaching them how to clean up after themselves. Thank you! We are trying to win the prizes!
