PBIS Turkey Bowling

Dear families,

Our November PBIS celebration is almost here and we are celebrating with a few games of TURKEY BOWLING! The party will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 29th. Students will be bowling with a rubber bowling ball to try and knock down three “turkey pins”. They will also be challenged by trying to knock the pins over while bowling backwards, hopping on one foot, blindfolded, and other fun and silly tricks.

Students will participate in this event if they have demonstrated positive behavior throughout the month of November and have less than 8 card flips.

Thanks for your support,

The PBIS team

**In the spirit of the holidays and to keep our turkey theme, 5 turkeys will be donated to the Salvation Army Food Bank in Dearborn Heights funded by the Haigh Spirit committee.

Agenda for the Week

Reading and Writing: Please continue to work with your child on our sight words. I tested list two today. The children are having fun learning these words in class and love playing our game of “bubble” to help them learn the words. List three will be the next list that is assessed on December 8th. Please review these words as well as the words on list one and two with your child.

Only a few more weeks of letters!!!! We worked on recognizing and writing the letter J and the letter Q. We learned the sound of each letter and practiced identifying objects that begin with each letter sound. Please continue to help your child correctly hold a pencil and form each letter.

This week we completed a R.A.N strategy about weather and wrote about what we would wear if it were raining outside, why we like windy weather, why we like cloudy weather, and why we like stormy weather. The children are having fun learning about the different types of weather and learning how to write about their opinions.

Math: We continued learning about simple addition and practiced tally marks some more. We used unifix cubes to find all the different ways to make the number 5. We learned the model, part, part, whole. We also learned the words sum, set, group, plus sign, equals sign. The children are excited about learning a “big kid” skill of adding numbers together.

Please practice counting to 100 by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s with your child. Also, help them to recognize these numbers by sight.

We continue working on subitizing. This is the ability to recognize a number or quantity at first sight. It might be fingers, tally marks, dots in a ten frame, or different objects to represent a number.

Here are a few videos we use in class:

Science: We continued our unit about weather. The children have tracked the weather and made observations each day. We talked about cloudy, rainy, stormy, windy, and sunny weather so far! The children will have the opportunity next week to participate in some fun science experiments about weather.

Social Studies: We continued talking about needs and wants this week. We had a discussion about how we can be thankful for both the things we have which we need and to be grateful for all the things which we have that are simply wants. The children are doing great identifying which items are a need and which are a want. We made a paper craft of a dinner place setting of all the things we are thankful for in our lives.

Housekeeping Items:

Change of Clothes

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE send in a change of clothes for your child. We will keep it in their locker and then if they have a bathroom accident or fall in mud or get wet from the playground, they will have clothes they can change into and we can take care of all that right here at school without having to disturb you at home or at work. Put an extra change of clothes (pants, underwear, shirt, socks, and maybe even an extra pair of shoes) in a bag, labeled with their name on it.

Snack Time

**** Due to a peanut allergy in our room, please do not send in any snacks that contain nuts.*****

Folders

Please make sure to empty the green folders each night! It is very difficult and time consuming to locate homework or important notes when the folder is full of papers from the day before. Remember to initial the communication log and feel free to add any notes to me!

Sight Word Test – List Two

It took me the entire day to complete testing with each student. The children are able to read more words each day! Thank you for working with the children at home and helping them become successful readers! I still need to record the testing results and make copies of their work. I will send home their progress on Monday. Sorry for the delay.

Reminder – Late Start

Just a quick reminder –

Tomorrow is late start. Arrival is at 9:35am. See you then!

Agenda for the Week

Reading and Writing: Please continue to work with your child on our sight words. List two will be the next list that is assessed on November 16. Please review these words as well as the words on list one with your child.

We worked on recognizing and writing the letter I and the letter R. We learned the sound of each letter and practiced identifying objects that begin with each letter sound. Please continue to help your child correctly hold a pencil and form each letter.

We continue to work on our writing and are practicing stretching out words. I tell the children to pretend they are holding an imaginary rubber band. Next they pull the rubber band while they slowly say the word. This allows the children to listen and hear more sounds. Next, they write down the sounds they hear in the word. This is called inventive spelling.

Here is a fun video about parts of a sentence:

This week for writing we worked on narrative writing and learned that narrative writing tells a story. We also began learning about opinion writing and learned that an opinion is something we think or feel. The children wrote about which fruit they would take on a picnic – watermelon or grapes.

The children are really getting good at identifying nouns, verbs, and adjectives in a sentence.

Math: We practiced recognizing, writing and representing numbers 19 and 20. We began learning about simple addition and practiced tally marks. I also assessed the children on counting and recognizing numbers.

Science: We began our unit about weather. The children are learning about different types of weather this month. We will focus on sun, rain, and clouds. We talked about windy weather this week. The children were able to participate in a hands-on activity with our fourth grade buddies where they created boats and then used straws to blow “create wind power” to move the boats through the water. The children raced their boats against each other. It was a very fun activity. We created brackets and raced against each other. The student winner then got to race the boat that Mrs. Izbicki and I made together. The teachers beat out the student boat! It was a great experience for everyone! Here are a few pictures:

Social Studies: We began talking about needs and wants this week. We had a discussion about the difference between these two words. Next week we will continue to learn about different items that we need and items that we want by doing a cut and glue activity, as well as through classroom discussions.

Housekeeping Items:

Field Trip Money

It was difficult collecting the money for the Field trip this time around. A few reminders moving forward:

  1. Field Trip money is due ON the due date.
  2. Money needs to be in an envelope or baggie LABELED with your child’s name. Sometimes the children hold their folders upside down and items fall out. If they are not labeled, we do not know to whom the items belong.
  3. Permission slip and money need to be turned in together and on time. I had money turned in with no permission slip or vice versa. It is difficult and time consuming to track down all of these items.
  4. EXACT CASH is always requested. We will not accept any checks and we will not provide change.
  5. Please make sure to read the field trip information and attached note regarding any special instructions, chaperone details, etc.

Thank in advance for reading and following the field trip guidelines!

Sight Word Lists

Here are our sight words for the year. Please make sure to practice all of the lists. We already assessed the children on List One on November 3rd. We will assess the children on List Two on November 16th. On this date, if there are any words from List One that they did not know, we will go over that list as well. Please continue practicing these words with your child at home.

List Three will be assessed on December 8th. On this date, we will review any unknown words from List One and List Two.

There are lots of fun ways to teach sight words. Many ideas are on pinterest or can be searched in google “Fun ways to teach sight words.”

Scholastic Book Order

Just a reminder —

Our classroom Scholastic Book order is due on Monday, November 13th. This due date will allow for the books to be delivered before we leave for Thanksgiving break.

Be sure to check out the “recommended book list” that I created for the class. This is full of great box sets for beginning reading, early phonics, and more!

Thank you for your support with growing a love for reading in our classroom and at home!

News From the Jungle

Please be sure to put your child on reading eggs and math seeds each night. It can be for just 10 minutes per night, but it will greatly improve their reading, writing, and math. You could do 10 minutes of reading eggs on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Then do 10 minutes of math seeds on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday or Sunday. Feel free to do more than 10 minutes if your schedule allows! These programs really are beneficial for the growth and development of your child!

If you misplaced your child’s login and need the information again, please email me at dimitrm@dearbornschools.org

Today a poster came home with our first Star Student! Each week I will send a poster home with a different child on Friday. The poster is to be completed over the weekend and sent back to school on Monday. We will learn about the Star Student throughout the week and then write a book about that child on Friday. This is a special time for the children. Every child will have the opportunity to be the Star Student!

There is a lot going on next week. Please take a look below to make sure you are aware of all the due dates and no school days for next week.

Agenda for the Week

Reading and Writing:  I assessed the children on sight word list one. Please continue to work with your child on these words. A list of these words came home in their folder with a check mark next to the words they were able to read and highlighted if they could not read the word. List two will be the next list that is assessed on November 16. Please review these words as well as the words on list one with your child.

We worked on recognizing and writing the letter H and the letter S. We learned the sound of each letter and practiced identifying objects that begin with each letter sound. Please continue to help your child correctly hold a pencil and form each letter.

We continue to work on our writing and reviewed that the beginning of a sentence starts with an uppercase (capital letter), there are finger spaces between words, and we end the sentence with a period. We have also been working to identify periods, question marks, and exclamation marks (excited mark) while reading. Here is a fun video about parts of a sentence:

We reviewed nouns, verbs, and adjectives.

The link to  create name tracers is also great for creating sight word tracers for your child.

If you would like to create tracing pages for your child, visit the website below:

https://www.handwritingworksheets.com/flash/printdots/singleword/index.html

Directions: Scroll down until you see a gray rectangle which says, “Step 1: Enter student name, then type your child’s name in the first box and the second one which says, “word” OR type in sight words. Choose the size you would like, size 2 or size 3 are best. Then click print.

Math: We practiced recognizing, writing and representing numbers 17 and 18. We continued working with 2D and 3D shapes. We are still working on counting by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s. Please practice these skills with your children at home and use the videos below to support their learning.

We continue working on subitizing. This is the ability to recognize a number or quantity at first sight. It might be fingers, tally marks, dots in a ten frame, or different objects to represent a number. Here are a few videos we use in class:

Science: We began our unit about weather. The children are learning about different types of weather this month. We will focus on sun, rain, and clouds. We talked about how to dress for different kinds of weather and learned lots of weather words. We will be learning about weather for the next few months and the children will have the opportunity to do some hands-on experiments!

Social Studies: We are moving into our needs and wants unit. The children talked with one another about items they think are things they need and items they think are wants. We will continue talking more about this topic and participate in different activities next week.

The children had a great day on Halloween. Our party was a big success and the parade was so much fun! Here are a few pictures to enjoy from the day:
