Agenda for the Week

Reading/Writing:  We continue to watch videos and read lots of books about ocean animals. The children love learning new facts about ocean animals. We are reading articles and answering questions about key details in the text. This week the children were assigned a specific ocean animal to learn about. I will help them in class to research this animal and write a report about it. I sent a note home today with the animal each child is researching and I am asking that you help them create that animal at home! Please do not send the project to school until June 2nd. We do not have any room in the class to store projects until the due date! In the past, some families have found cute crafts online (pinterest, youtube, etc), and other families have used wood, plaster, recycled materials and made 3D models of the ocean animal. It all depends on how much time you and your child would like to put into the project. The children will present their craft/model and report on their ocean animal to the class and we will be inviting all of you to come in to see the crafts/models and reports!

Please refer to the note that came home for more details!

Math: We took our -5 math quiz today. Today, I sent home the -6 flashcards for practice. We will take the -6 quiz on Friday, May 12th.

Science: We continue to learn about how we can better take care of the earth as the children are excited about this topic and keep asking more questions about how we can reuse items, recycle, and reduce!

We also focused on our ocean unit and made some crafts to go along with the animals we learned about. This week the children made starfish, sea shells, clown fish, sharks, and jellyfish! We were busy this week!

Housekeeping Items:

The class as a whole has been super talkative. It is making instruction more and more difficult on a daily basis. Please remind the children that the rules at school and in our classroom have not changed. With the warmer weather, we are all getting restless for summer!

Children need a snack each day! Please do not send candy as a snack. The children need a healthy snack each day such as fruit, crackers, cheese, yogurt, granola bars, etc.  As a reminder, no juice is allowed in class for snack.

News from the Jungle

NWEA testing is under way. Almost all of the children have been tested on reading. Today we began the math test. We will continue this portion of the test next week.

Next week I will also begin DRA testing the children. This test is used to determine the children’s reading levels.

Please continue to put your child on readingeggs.com at home and have them do a couple of lessons each night.  This can count on the reading log in the homework for some of the nightly reading!

The end of the year is quickly approaching! Please take a look and make note of the upcoming events for May and June! The PTA calendar with most of these events listed came home this week in your child’s green folder.

Math: We took our -4 math quiz today. Today, I sent home the -5 flashcards for practice. We will take the -5 quiz on Friday, May 5th.

This week in math we reviewed for the NWEA test.

Science: We talked more about earth day and ways we can help the earth by recycling, reusing, and reducing.

We also focused on our ocean unit and made some crafts to go along with the animals we learned about. This week the children made sea turtles, seahorses, and crabs.

Here is a picture of our paper plate sea turtles, paper plate seahorses, and hand print crabs!

Social Studies: We continued to look at the globe and talk about the oceans. We talked about where each of us has family living or where we may be originally from around the world. While learning about certain ocean animals this week, we learned which oceans they live in and we looked at the glob to reinforce where these animals are in the world.

Ocean Fun and Homework Packet

We have been so busy with our ocean unit, that the homework got lost under a stack of crafts! The homework packet will come home today. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Here are just a few pictures of some of the things we have been doing already this week:

The children were wondering about how waves are formed, so we got a big tub of water and we all took turns trying to make waves with the wind from our mouths!

We also have been busy learning about how to keep the ocean clean and why that is important. We have learned about the ocean habitat and which animals live in the ocean. We have learned new ocean vocabulary. We have made graphs about which of us have swam in the ocean before and about what ocean animal is our favorite. We have read articles and highlighted the important information, as well as watched videos to help us build our background knowledge.

We also have spent a lot of time learning all about the ocean zones and which ocean animals live in each zone. We completed a R.A.N strategy (Reading and Analyzing Non-Fiction Text) and a craft about the ocean zones.

As you can see, we have been very busy!

Scholastic Book Order

Any orders for April for our scholastic book club are due tomorrow by the end of the school day. I will submit the order at the end of the day tomorrow and the books should arrive at Haigh the following Tuesday.

Thank you for your support in fostering a love of reading in the children this year!

We will have ONE more book order in May and that will conclude our orders with Scholastic for the year.

A word about spelling tests:

Thank you so much for all of your hard work this year with the children at home and helping them to learn their spelling words. This group of children has consistently done really well on their tests throughout the last several months. The spelling words the children have recently been struggling with are as follows: of, have, with, was, from

NWEA testing will begin next week. We will start with reading and then move on to math the following week. Please make sure you are getting the children to bed early in order for them to be well rested for this assessment.

PBIS CELEBRATION!

Dear Families,

On March 29 we will be having a PBIS celebration to recognize your child’s positive behavior. This month’s celebration theme will be GAMES! Your child may bring board games to school.

Please label everything with your name. This celebration is an opportunity for students to have fun and play games with each other. However, if you are concerned about an item being shared with other students we recommend that it stays at home.

Thank you,

Haigh PBIS Committee

Next week, we will use these blueprints to help us complete our own books about camping. The children will be the author and the illustrator of their books! They will create the cover, title, write a introduction, tell the events as they happened (in order), and conclude the story. I am so excited to see how the children’s stories will turn out!
