Happy Mother’s day to all of you! I hope everyone enjoys the weekend with family and friends. We made a little something for all you moms. We hope you like it!
LAST CALL: This is the last call for scholastic book orders for this year. Our last order for this year will be placed on 5/15. Please be sure to get your orders in by the end of the day on Monday. All orders may be submitted online. Directions on how to do this are under the “Scholastic Reading Club” tab on our blog!
I have a few more DRA tests to complete to determine the children’s reading levels. All of the children, who I have tested so far, have been doing great! I am so proud of the growth every child has displayed this year! Thank you again, for all of your support with their learning and helping them to be ready for first grade!
Please continue to put your child on readingeggs.com at home and have them do a couple of lessons each night. This login for Reading Eggs is valid through next year! You will have access to your child’s account over the entire summer! Please utilize this amazing resource to help combat some “summer loss.” Summer loss is when children lose a little bit of the growth they had made throughout the school year because they are not using the skills. We all know the saying, “If you do not use it, you lose it.” Help your child keep up their reading skills throughout the summer by having them read books to you and by having them continue to complete lessons on readingeggs.com.

Agenda for the Week
Reading/Writing: We continue to learning about ocean animals. The children were assigned their ocean animals last week and this week I began helping the children research these animals in class. We will continue our research over the next few weeks and will be working on our blueprints (graphic organizers) as well as beginning our reports which will be in book form. Please do not send the project to school until June 2nd. We do not have any room in the class to store projects until the due date! In the past, some families have found cute crafts online (pinterest, youtube, etc), and other families have used wood, plaster, recycled materials and made 3D models of the ocean animal. It all depends on how much time you and your child would like to put into the project. The children will present their craft/model and report on their ocean animal to the class and we will be inviting all of you to come in and see the crafts/models and reports!
Please refer to the note that came home for more details!
Math: We took our -6 math quiz today. Today, I sent home the -7 flashcards for practice. We will take the -7 quiz on Friday, May 19th.
Science: The children are very interested in sharks, so we read several books and learned many facts about sharks this week. Ask your child: “Which Shark is the fastest shark?” (Mako Shark) Then ask: “How fast does it swim?” (42mph)
I suggested that the children might be able to ask while you are driving in the car to drive at 42 miles per hour to see how fast a Mako shark can swim! We also learned that a Great White Shark will lazily swim at 2 miles per hour through the ocean when it is not in pursuit of prey. Maybe you could drive the car at 2 miles per hour and show your child how slow the Great White Shark swims when it has nowhere to be!
We also learned that the length of a Megalodon shark was as long as TWO of our classrooms end-to-end!
We focused on our ocean unit and made some crafts to go along with the animals we learned about. This week the children were able to make lobsters! We painted the children’s hands and feet and used our fingers to paint the rest of the body of the lobster! They are drying through the weekend and we will finish these crafts on Monday!

Amar working hard on his lobster!

Lea getting her feet painted!

Maha getting her feet painted!

Noah and Zahrae are hard at work creating their lobsters!

Layan focusing hard on creating her lobster craft!

Someone had ticklish feet! Rayan getting his foot tickled… I mean, painted! He was all laughs while creating his lobster!
They also requested to make angler fish, so I created a fun craft for us to do in order for them to create an angler fish! They turned out great! Now I just have to find a place to put the lobsters and the angler fish! Our ocean (classroom) is getting pretty full!

Here are some other pictures from our ocean classroom:

Our lockers are displaying our sea shell, starfish, and crab crafts!

Our windows have been turned into under water scenes, displaying our sea shell, starfish, crab, and seahorse crafts!

Our classroom has been transformed into an ocean with all of our crafts hanging from the ceiling. We have jellyfish (which we made with our 5th grade buddies from Mrs. Niner’s class), sea turtles, clown fish, sharks, and octopus!

Here is our door! We turned it into a shark!!! We like to pretend that we are learning inside the shark’s belly and that we have been gobbled up by a hungry (megalodon, bull, or Great White — depending on who you ask) shark!
We all are having so much fun learning about ocean animals!
Housekeeping Items:
The class as a whole has been super talkative. It is making instruction more and more difficult on a daily basis. Please remind the children that the rules at school and in our classroom have not changed. With the warmer weather, we are all getting restless for summer!
Children need a snack each day! Please do not send candy as a snack. The children need a healthy snack each day such as fruit, crackers, cheese, yogurt, granola bars, etc. As a reminder, no juice is allowed in class for snack.
