March Reader – Nate’s Mom

Nate’s mom came in this morning and read “Miss Maple” and “And Then It’s Spring.” Nate surveyed the class after his mom was done reading and the class equally enjoyed both books! Thank you so much for coming in this morning to read to us!

March Reader – Payton’s mom

Payton’s mom read “Dragon’s Love Tacos” and “Max at Night.” The children enjoyed hearing both stories. They especially thought it was funny when the Dragon ate a spicy taco and breathed fire and burned down his house.

March Reader – Amar’s mom

Amar’s  mom read a silly story called “There’s a Giraffe in My Soup.” The children loved this story! Thank you for coming in to read to the class!

March Reader – Maha’s Mom

Today Maha’s mom came in and read to the class. The children were great listeners! They answered many comprehension questions throughout the reading. They even got to answer the question, “Do you think mermaids are real?” Their answers were mixed! 🙂 We spoke at length about how they might know mermaids are real or not and what evidence they have to prove their answers.

Thank you for coming in to read to us today!

Agenda for the Week

Reading/Writing:  We are still working on narrative writing. The children know that narrative writing is to tell a story and to entertain the reader. The children are learning about camping and practicing using transition words (first, next, then, last) to sequence events that happen when one goes camping.  We began using all of the information that we have brainstormed to complete our writing blueprint (graphic organizer). Next week, we will use these blueprints to help us complete our own books about camping. The children will be the author and the illustrator of their books! They will create the cover, title, write a introduction, tell the events as they happened (in order), and conclude the story. I am so excited to see how the children’s stories will turn out!

Spelling words for next week will be in the homework packet coming home on Monday.

Math: We took our +9 math quiz on Monday due to school being closed last week. We took it just to see how we could do and most of the children did a wonderful job! Friday, we completed our +10 math quiz. Yesterday, I sent home the -0 flashcards for practice. We will take the -0 quiz on Friday, March 24th.

This week continued learning about comparing numbers using the greater than, less than, and equal to symbols. We also focused more on subtraction and different ways to decompose numbers. We practiced drawing the biggest number with circles and then crossing off the number of circles being “taken away.” We also reviewed using a number line to subtract. We started practicing putting the biggest number in our head and the small number on our hands, then counting down to find the answer. Example: 7 – 4 =? “I have 7 in my head and 4 on my hands (hold up 4 fingers). Touch your head and say 7, then put down one finger at a time while counting down (backwards), 6, 5, 4, 3. Three is the answer.

Please continue to practice counting by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s to 100 with your child at home. Also practice counting to 30 by 2’s (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20…..).  Other activities you can practice at home are using tally marks to count objects, identifying 2D/3D shapes around the house of community, and really making sure your child has good one-to-one correspondence when counting (this means that they touch each object as they are counting and count all objects correctly).

Science: We are still learning about the basic needs of living things. This week we began comparing living and nonliving things. The children completed a book about living and nonliving things where the children had to complete the words of each thing that was living or nonliving by cutting out the letters and listening to the sounds they heard in the word.

Social Studies: We began discussing maps. We talked about the shape of Michigan and located where we live on our hands! The children observed that our state looks like a mitten. We reviewed the name of our country and what the flag looks like. We will continue talking about maps and globes and complete activities to reinforce this topic.

Housekeeping Items:

Children need a snack each day! Please do not send candy as a snack. The children need a healthy snack each day such as fruit, crackers, cheese, yogurt, granola bars, etc.  As a reminder, no juice is allowed in class for snack.

March Readers – Shannon Peterson and the Dearborn High Football Team

Today we had a special treat! Shannon Peterson, the Executive Director of Student Achievement for Dearborn Schools came to read to us today. She read a Dr. Seuss story to the children! The Dearborn High football team also came in to read to us today! The football players read a story about St. Patrick’s day to the children, but the children were more excited just to ask the football players questions about football, high school, and leprechauns!

Here are pictures from our visitors today:

March Reader – Gavin’s Dad

Gavin’s dad came in to read to the children today. He brought in two books, “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover” and “The Night Before St. Patrick’s Day.” He passed out special glasses to help the children to be able to see the leprechaun in the book! The children also got some of the leprechaun’s gold coins at the end of the story!

Thank you for reading to us today and bringing in those special items for the children!

Kindergarten Round-Up

March Reader – Nate’s Dad

Nate’s dad came in yesterday to read to the class. The class was excited to have their first dad reading to them! The book that was read was called, “As an Oak Tree Grows.” The children were all very excited to see how much the tree grew on each page. They were very curious about how big oak trees can grow in real life.

Thank you for you reading to the class!
