News from the Jungle

Happy Friday! This is my second week back and we are all happy to be back together again! The children have been so sweet to always ask about Stella and how she is doing!  We have had Playworks come into our room and teach us a few different games to help us have fun during our indoor recesses and give us activities to do during the school day when we need a little break! The children loved learning and playing these new games!

Agenda for the Week

Reading and Writing: We learned that sometimes two letters together make one sound. This week we practiced ar says R, like a pirate. See the video below and the pictures of the pirate hats we made in order to learn this letter/sound combination:

We worked on learning the -ot word family and focused on rhyming.

We reviewed nouns, verbs, and adjectives. We are trying to use these parts of speech to help us expand our sentences.

These are the videos we use in class to help the children understand nouns, adjectives, and verbs:

Here is a video which promotes letter recognition of uppercase and lowercase letters, as well as, letter sounds.

Please remember to watch the How-To videos which I have made to help your child at home with name practice, letter recognition, and letter sound acquisition.

If your child already has mastered these skills, feel free to watch the sight word video or reading comprehension video to help your child continue their academic growth.

Math: We reviewed how to find the area of an object by choosing different objects in the room to cover with unifix cubes. Here area  few pictures:

We continue to work on number bonds and focus on addition through story problems.

Many of the children are mixing up their teen numbers and writing and reading them backwards. For example, they call 14 the number 41. Please have your child watch the video below to help them learn that numbers in the teens begin with a one:

Below are 2D and 3D shape videos:

Social Studies: We are learning about maps. We will be working with our fourth grade buddies from Mrs. Izbicki’s class to create pretend neighborhoods by using community buildings and our own drawings to create giant maps!

Housekeeping Items:

Folders

Please make sure to empty the folder each night! It is very difficult and time consuming to locate homework or important notes when the folder is full of papers from the day before. Please be sure to send the folder to school each day. It is a big part of our arrival and dismissal routines and the folders help the children keep all of their papers organized.

Change of clothes

Please send in a change of clothes (pants, shirt, underwear, socks) in a gallon bag with their name clearly written on the baggie. My most frequent call home is to ask for parents to bring a change of clothes to school. Even the most disciplined children have accidents at school sometimes. We have so much fun during the day that sometimes the children do not want to stop to use the bathroom when needed. Not only do bathroom accidents happen, but sometimes the playground equipment is wet or the ground is muddy. Having a change of clothes at school makes it easy for me and for you to help your child feel clean and comfortable in the quickest way possible. We will leave the baggie of clothes in their locker at school.
