News from the Jungle

A word about spelling tests:

Thank you so much for all of your hard work this year with the children at home and helping them to learn their spelling words. This group of children has consistently done really well on their tests throughout the last several months. I have noticed a few words that the children as a whole group are struggling with and wanted to note it for all of you in order to reinforce this skill at home as well. The spelling words the children have recently been struggling with are as follows: of, have, with, was, from

NWEA testing will begin next week. We will start with reading and then move on to math the following week. Please make sure you are getting the children to bed early in order for them to be well rested for this assessment.

Agenda for the Week

Reading/Writing:  We are back to informational writing and linking our science, reading, and writing together to complete reports about ocean animals. First, we began learning about the different ocean zones and which animals live in each zone. We will be learning about sharks, fish, dolphins, crabs, sea horses, and sea turtles. We will read articles about the animals and write reports about them as well as complete many crafts. We will use our crafts to turn our classroom into an ocean!

We created a bulletin board with our pictures of the children scuba diving and each child wrote about which ocean animal they would like to be and why!

Math: We took our -3 math quiz today. Today, I sent home the -4 flashcards for practice. We will take the -4 quiz on Friday, April 28th.

This week in math we focused on telling time. We learned to tell time on the hour and half hour, even though we did practice counting by 5’s around the clock to total 60 minutes in one hour. We also discussed there being 60 seconds in 1 minute. The children practiced labeling clocks, learned the difference between analog and digital clocks, as well as created their own wrist watches!

Here are a few videos we watched on telling time:

Science: We talked about earth day and ways we can help the earth by recycling, reusing, and reducing. We had a great assembly today about how we can “Think Green!”

Social Studies: We are still learning about maps. We reviewed compasses. Tying in our ocean theme, we looked a globe this week and discussed the difference between the green parts and the blue parts. The children were amazed to learn that the earth is mostly covered in water! The children learned a few facts about oceans from our ocean unit: 1)There are 5 oceans in the world 2) The largest ocean is the pacific ocean

Housekeeping Items:

Children need a snack each day! Please do not send candy as a snack. The children need a healthy snack each day such as fruit, crackers, cheese, yogurt, granola bars, etc.  As a reminder, no juice is allowed in class for snack.
