I decided to push their Chapter 9-15 quiz until tomorrow to allow for more time to prepare. Today was considered a “catch up” day where they worked on previous assignments (such as the Figurative Language Hunt, Sensory Details Chart, and chapter questions) which will be due this week or next. Chapter 8-15 questions will be graded tomorrow during the quiz.

We also read chapter 16 and predicted what we think will happen next since we are so close to the end of the book.

This week we have read Chapters 1-3 of The Giver and had small group and whole class discussions about the novel’s community and how it differs so much from our own. We are tracking vocabulary words they use and what they mean in our society as well as jobs the characters have and what they align with in our society. The students are generating thoughtful questions during these discussions and I can’t wait to dig deeper into this novel with them!

Due to the fact that many 6th graders are not finished with their Language Arts MSTEP, we had to continue testing today. Those that finished their test yesterday will go to Mrs. Bailey’s language arts class to continue with The Prince and the Pauper play.   If the entire testing room finished their assessment, we joined the students in her room for the remaining time left.

May 12th Field Trip Information

On May 12th, we are going to see Beauty and the Beast with the entire 6th grade, followed by lunch at the Fairlane Mall food court.  This field trip is part of our language arts folktales curriculum and a written response will be collected as a summative grade once we return. Any student that chose not to participate in the field trip (excused absences included) must still fulfill this grade requirement by reading the Beauty and the Beast folktale and writing up a C.E.R. response citing textual evidence to support the given prompt. We are encouraging all students to participate in this field trip but understand that not all students show interest or are able to attend. To be fair to all students, the written response is a requirement for everyone.
