September 7th

Today we had a discussion of what a “Good Fit” book is and why it’s important that we are reading. The expectation is that all 6th graders are reading at home for 100 minutes total every week. This could mean 20 minutes every night for 5 nights, or any combination that works for your schedule. Making sure your book is a “good fit” is important so we can be challenged and grow as readers. If a book is too easy (below your Lexile range) then you won’t be expanding your vocabulary very much and will grow at a slower rate. If a book is too hard (above your Lexile range) then  you may feel frustrated because there are too many new vocabulary words and your comprehension will suffer, which could lead to a dislike of reading if this happens too often.  We will understand more about our Lexile ranges next week when we take the Reading NWEA.

We will be taking the Language and Reading NWEA next week. This will take most of the week so my blog posts will be short and mainly inform you about homework.

We received the All About Me One-Pager today. If you were absent or lost it, here it is:  All About Me One-Pager    This will be due Tuesday, September 11th by the end of class. We worked on it some today but will be able to work on it in class if you finish your NWEA test. Otherwise it is expected to be finished as homework.

Homework:

  • All About Me One-Pager – due Tuesday (September 11th)
  • Summer Learning Book talk is due September 27th! Be prepared to present with your finished book talk on this day!
  • Read Theory – 5 quizzes passed by September 14th

Summer Learning Expectation for all 6th graders:

Read 3-5 novels over the summer (no graphic novels). Be prepared to do a book talk when you arrive in the Fall! This won’t be due on the first day but if you would like to get a head start on the assignment I attached the directions and rubric!
