Hangouts Meet by Google

Afternoon All,

As always, I hope everyone and their families are well!

Instead of an assignment for tomorrow (Friday, 3/27), I would like to meet with you guys by way of Hangouts Meet by Google.

I am thinking 1030hrs for 2/3rd and 1100hrs for 4/5th, allowing a half hour for each class. This way we can check in on one another, discuss past assignments, and upcoming assignments.

I know many of you are waking up a little later than normal (ME TOO); however, the above times work out best for me. I have to be at the PD in the afternoon, so the MEET has to be in the morning.

If you do not already have the application, it is simple to get. Go to the applications app on your phone, type in Hangouts Meet by Google, and download. Once downloaded, log-in using your district e-mail account. You can join the MEET by calling the number (audio only), entering the PIN code (audio / video), or Nickname sent to your district e-mail. Also, if you do not have phone access, you can access the MEET by computer (https://meet.google.com).

Send me an e-mail and let me know what you think. I am going to add the MEET information in GC.

Corrections & The Coronavirus

March 20th,

Let us conclude this week with the last component of the Criminal Justice System. You guessed it, Corrections. Much like the other two components, corrections is also suffering the impacts of the Coronavirus. Some county jails (including L.A. County) around the country are releasing prisoners as a way of adhering to “social distancing” and to create space to quarantine prisoners if an outbreak occurs. As of now, there are no known stories of county jails in Michigan releasing or planning to release prisoners in response to COVID-19. However, there is a petition circulating calling for Governor Whitmore to take executive action and commute the sentences of some inmates (elderly, sick, vulnerable etc).

Here is where your thinking caps go on! Should those who have committed crimes, just do their time, no matter what is going on in society? Should the seriousness of the offense be “a”or “the” determining factor in who is eligible for early release? In instances of early release, is the safety of the public placed in jeopardy? Does this type of crisis remind “us” how prisoners are the nation’s “forgotten citizens?” These are a few questions on the minds of many; maybe you guys can provide some answers!

Michigan Courts & The Coronavirus

March 19th,

Click on the link below and read the attached article. Upon completion, put yourselves in the minds of courthouse personnel (judges, magistrates, attorneys, court officers, clerks, jurors etc). With the concept of “social distancing” being the overarching recommendation from medical professionals, which types of cases (traffic hearings, misdemeanors, felonies) are the exception(s) to the rule for court to proceed.

Should the perspective of the accused (defendant) matter? Should the fact of them being in custody or not, effect their right to have a hearing in a timely fashion? Share your thoughts and opinions with a classmate or two.

Police & the Coronavirus

March 18th,

Click on the link below and read the attached article. Upon completion, put yourselves in the shoes of a citizen and in the boots of a police officer. Mentally evaluate both sides of the aisle. Once you are done with this I want you to engage someone (friend, family member, co-worker) in conversation about the article. Get their opinion and take the opposing argument or perspective (e.g., friend takes citizen’s perspective, you take officer’s). Put on your thinking caps!

For those of you reading this, reach out to your classmates, and direct them to this blog. Lastly, my preference in communicating with you all is through district e-mail. If you are not setup with your account, please do so, as that is how I will respond to any inquiries.
