8th Grade Language Arts                       Mrs.  Corriveau   Room 42

*Course Overview:

This class will explore various composition styles and a broad range of literature and Informational Texts.  Course work will involve quizzes and tests, formal papers, analysis of literature, group work, presentations, class discussions, journals and projects.

*Grading Policy:

1.  Grades will be given using a weighted point system.  Homework will range from 10 to 25+ points depending on the assignment.  Tests and quizzes may range from 10 to 50+ points.  Presentation and group work grades will vary depending on the assignment.

80% of your grade will be summative (tests, quizzes, projects, formal papers, presentations).

20% of your grade will be formative (homework, participation, classwork).

The grading scale is as follows:

100%-99% = A+ 89%-88% = B+   79%-78% = C+   69%-68% = D+    59%-below = E

98%-93% = A     87%-83% = B     77%-73% = C     67%-63% = D

92%-90% = A-    82%-80% = B-   72%-70% = C-    62%-60% = D-

2.  There will be no rounding of grades.

3.  Late summative assignments will lose a letter grade for each day they are late.

 

*Retake Policy:

You may retake a summative assessment one time, if you meet the following requirements:

A.  you receive a score of 59% or lower

B.  you meet with me before/after school to request the retake and discuss your original score.

C. retakes must be scheduled before/after school and completed within 1 week of the return of the original assessment.

 

*Homework/late work:

Homework is not optional.  I expect every assignment to be done to the best of your ability.

A.  Homework is due as you walk through the door at the beginning of class.

B.  Late work will result in automatic half credit

C.  No late work will be accepted the last week of the card marking

 

*Classroom Procedures and Rules:

Procedures:

  1. Bellwork will be posted on the board daily.  As soon as you come to class, begin working on it.
  2. I only accept work done in blue or black ink.  Pencil is fine as well.
  3. Use the proper MLA heading on all papers.
  4. Stay in your seat until I dismiss you.

Rules:

  1. Keep your hands (and feet) to yourself.
  2. Raise your hand and wait to be called on before you begin speaking.
  3. Come prepared for class every day
  4. No gum, food or drinks.  Water is ok.

*SSR: 

SSR is an important component of this class.  The specific procedures and norms will be explained on a separate SSR instruction sheet

*Materials:

You must have the proper materials by _________________.  This will be one of the first grades in the grade book.

  • 1 1-11/2 inch binder with pockets.
  • 10 tab dividers.
  • Loose leaf paper.
  • Writing implements
  • Book cover
  • Pens/pencils/highlighters
  • 3 x 5 inch index cards (1 pkg)
  • Box of tissues
  • Colored pencils
  • Pencil pouch
  • Flash drive – would be very helpful
  • Composition Notebook
  • 1-2 pkgs. 3×3 Sticky Notes

*Attendance/Tardy Policy:

1.  I will follow the district attendance policy.

2. 3 tardies in one class, in the same card-marking, will result in a call home and a detention.

3.  You are responsible for getting all of your work when you are absent. You will have one day for each day you were absent.

        • No, I want them done online. Did you see the boxes on the right of each log on the list with check marks? It will not “say anything”, you’ll just have to click on the box to make a checkmark in it. According to my view, you have submitted number three, so go make the check mark and go on.

  1. I cant login on iLearn and i looked on my planner to see what my user and password and I tried to login and it didnt work i also tried to reset my password but i think my username is the problem.

    For the 4 articles to print can I copy and paste them on word and then print because I don’t know how to print the article from the website?

    Some of my articles don’t have a author. One of them is from a college. Should I just write the name of the college?
