2.) Students work on Middle Ages Review Sheet for tomorrow’s TEST & ask questions about the content as needed.

  • Kings gave land to lords in exchange for military service & loyalty. Fiefs are the land grants given to lords. Knights served & protected lords.
  • Use your Bubble Map to explain the life of a peasant. What did they do? What was it like? Was it easy? Details help!
  • Better farming technology + better weather = more agricultural productivity
  • Christians: fighting for Jesus/God to get the Holy Land; Muslims: defending the Holy Land that was already theirs.
  • tension between Christians and Muslims
  • Use your notes on The Age of Chivalry! Age 7 started training, age 14 squire serving other knights, age 21 full knight; answer ALL of the questions

Classwork for 11-12-18

1.) Bell Work for 11-12-18:

What did each side believe they were fighting for during the Crusades?

Explain in your own words.

Answer:

  • Christians: believed they were fighting the Crusades in the name of Jesus to take back the place of his birth from infidels
  • Muslims: believed they were defending land that was theirs. From their perspective, Christians were brutal invaders.

2.) Took notes on (some of) the causes & effects of the Crusades.

Causes:

  • Muslim Turks take control over the Holy Land of Jerusalem in 1071 CE
  • Muslim Turks threaten Constantinople & the Byzantine Empire in 1090s
  • Byzantine Emperor asks Catholic Pope in Rome for help

Effects:

  • Trade between Europe & Asia increases; medicine, knowledge, spices, silk, etc…
  • Feudalism weakens
  • Kings become more powerful through the control of large numbers of knights
  • Tensions between Christian, Muslims, & Jews grew
  • Pope’s power declines & religious intolerance grows; Church takes the blame

1.) Bell Work for 11-09-18:

  • Begin reading your SAT SLOT booklet article “Saladin and the Crusaders Fight Over Jerusalem”.
  • Read with the purpose of identifying words you do not know in order to define them.
  • Locate & underline the author’s claim in the article.

2.) Discuss the SAT SLOT article vocabulary & read through article as a class.

Words we identified as a class to definte:

  • Saladin: sultan (king) of Egypt & Syria
  • negotiated: obtain or bring about by discussion
  • graciously: in a courteous, kind, and pleasant manner
  • crucified: criticize someone relentlessly; nail someone to a cross to die (like Jesus)
  • Crusade: Christians fighting with Muslims over the Holy Land

Answer these questions while watching the video:

  • What were some of the reasons for the First Crusade?
  • What were some of the outcomes of the First Crusade?
  • What are the lasting outcomes and impact of the Crusades on both Europe and the Middle East?
