Good Morning!

We do not have access to our phone this morning.  If you need to reach us, please email Ms. Cote (I am out of the building today) at cotem@dearbornschools.org  She will leave her email up all day and will see anything that comes in.   In an extreme emergency you can call the Hype main number, but please reserve that for true emergencies.  (Picking a student up early, requesting a meeting, etc, are not considered emergencies).

Thank you!

Wayne County Regional Enhancement Education Millage Proposal

School districts in Wayne County have placed a proposal on the November 8th ballot to provide added funding for our schools. It is the “Regional Enhancement Millage Proposal.”

If approved by the entire county, the 2 mil proposal will generate approximately $6.2 million from Dearborn but the District will receive $7.8 million in additional funding for our schools.  Money would go to local schools starting this year and the millage expires after six years.  Continue reading

Don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour Sunday night to get your extra hour of sleep.  I know I need it!!!  🙂

We have been working on sheet orders this week.   A few of you had really large orders (amazing!) and those will be shipped directly to your house.   Everything else will be sent home with the students when they arrive.  They should be in at the end of next week or the beginning of the following week.  Thank you again for your support.

Conferences:  We have to do conferences a little differently at Hype, as we do not have the use of the room after 3 p.m.   Notes will be going home on today whether a conference is required and how to schedule a conference with us if you would like one.  Conferences will be Nov 10, 16 and 17 during school hours.  If a conference is requested, or you would like a conference, please be sure to return the form by Monday, November 7th.  Thank you.

Students have been doing an excellent job brining healthy lunches – however we’ve noticed they’re not being kept cold.  Even with a thermal lunch tote, students need an ice pack to make sure their food stays at a safe temperature.  We’ve had a few lunches with warm yogurt, leftovers, meat, etc. which could cause the student(s) to become ill.  Perishable foods (dairy, meat, cheese, milk, cooked leftovers, pizza, hot dogs, lunch meat – etc.) can only be kept out for 2 hours before they can spoil…student lunches are kept out a minimum of 4 hours before they eat.  If your son/daughter needs a thermal lunch bag or ice pack, that will be our focus at Target for the next few weeks :

Other Dates to Remember in November:

Nov 8 – No School

Nov 18 – DIA

Nov 19 – Zap Zone Weekend Activity

Nov 23 – Conference Release Day

Nov 24-25 – Thanksgiving Break

Healthy Lunch Winners!

October Healthy Lunch Winners are Nejwa Elghoul and Ali Salman.  Our most improved lunch award goes to Malak Zahr!   Congratulations and keep up the great work!! We are so proud of you!   Beginning in November (tomorrow) students will receive credit for up to two fruits and up to two vegetables each, but not more.  This will keep someone from running away with the lead because they brought 5 bananas every day.    LOL!   A student who brings a healthy entrée, a fruit, a vegetable, and water, should receive 4 points a day.  If they don’t bring additional juices or  snacks – they receive 2 bonus points. That equals about 80-120 points for the month.  The following is a break down of our class:

24%  received 100 points or more

14% received 80-90 points

33% received 50-60 points

29% received fewer than 50 points (range was between 29-47)

Corresponding with that – almost all of our students lost a few pounds this month.  We are so proud of them.  When it comes to weight loss, 80% of it is food choices and 20% of it is exercise.  We are seeing results from students healthy choices!  I should also note, most students who didn’t lose, maintained their weight.  AWESOME WORK!!!!

November Goal – only one food in  the “o point” category.  This might mean choosing between chips and a dessert.  We discussed this with the students and they are all up for the challenge.  The idea is not to eliminate their favorite treats – but learn how to manage them so they are eating them in moderation.  They are doing such a great job, we would love to see more students move into the 80-90 point range!!!!

On that note – have a safe and fun Halloweeen!

October 28, 2016

It’s unbelievable to us that Monday will be Halloween and we will have made it through another month.  Time is flying and we are having fun!   Since my very first year of teaching, 19 years ago, I’ve always felt that Halloween was the time of  year when we were finally settled, routines established, and we were in the groove of things!  It is a good feeling!

I have received all of the sheet orders, and will be going though and working on that over the weekend.   I will place the order next week, once everything is checked, double checked and balanced.  They will arrive before Thanksgiving.  Thank you so much for your support.  We received more classroom support than ever before and it means a lot.  We can do so much with and for the students with the profits from this fundraiser – so THANK YOU!!!

One reminder about fragrances, please have students refrain from strong colognes, perfumes and lotions in the classroom, including hand sanitizers.    We would like to be a fragrance free room as we do have several aversions to fragrances.  I personally get migraines with any strong fragrance, particularly florals.  It makes it pretty hard to teach when you’re fighting a headache like that.  Thank you so much for your cooperation.

Also  – we will be going to all of our regularly scheduled job sites and community sites on Monday – no costumes!

Upcoming Dates:

Nov 4th – half day

Nov 8th – half day

Nov 18 – DIA

Thanksgiving Break – Nov 23-27

Homework Assignment

All students will be coming home with a short homework assignment tonight.  In their backpacks, should be instructions on proper hand-washing techniques.  This is important as we are preparing food here at Hype, and also completing the ServSafe Certification.  Please have students practice washing their hands following the instructions they bring home.

Also, those students currently in the cooking group – Sarah, Sabrina, Nejwa, Hiba, Ali J, Munasar, Fowzi, and Yaser  – have a cooking lab assignment due Monday.  The assignment was sent home last week, if you need another copy please be sure to request one by tomorrow.

Thank you!

October 21, 2016

Just a few announcements:

Weekend Movie information is being sent home today with the students who RSVP’d to the activity, please look for it in your son/daughter’s back pack.    We are looking forward to a great time!

Ms. Cote is sending a cooking homework assignment home today and is due next Friday.

Please remember to make an appointment if you need to meet with us.  It’s always nice to see friendly faces, but we have more students, with more needs,  and don’t have as much time available as we did last year.   It’s a “good” busy,  we just don’t have much unscheduled time.  Likewise, we will always return calls and/or texts the same day, it just might not be as quickly as before.  Thank you for your patience and understanding!

Have a great weekend!

Weekend Activity – Update

For those of those attending the movie this Saturday, it will be at Fairlane AMC rather than Southland Cinemark.  Southland is no longer showing the movie.   We will try to make it to Southland later this year!

Details will be sent home tomorrow!
