January 19, 2017

Hello!  A few things have come up  – so I thought I’d get the blog out a day early.

Lunches/Food – Students are doing great bringing in healthy lunches!  Keep up the great work!  Please do not send in extra snacks, or drinks such as coffee or hot chocolate, pop, etc.  While its easy to want to give “kids” everything they want, it’s better that they learn that there is a time and place for everything.  Hot Chocolate and other treats are for home.

Bank Accounts – Due to several absences, we had openings for our trip to Fairlane Mall today.   We were able to send three extra students who weren’t originally scheduled, because they each had a bank account here at school.  They were so excited!  Just an example of why students have bank accounts here at school.  If you would like to start one for your son/daughter, you can do so at any time.

Fairlane Mall – Students who attended Fairlane Mall unexpectedly today, will be bringing their lunch home, as they purchased lunch from the food court.  We placed their lunches from home in the refrigerator at Hype today, so they should be fine by the time they reach home.

Phone Calls to the Classroom – Please leave a message (text or voice mail is fine) if we don’t answer when you call.  We do not stop teaching to answer the phone.  We promise we will get back to you as soon as possible, however, when you call repeatedly without leaving a message, it is very disruptive to the classroom.  Also please note, we will not return calls unless you leave a message.  Thank you for your understanding.

Upcoming Dates:

January 27th – Half Day, dismissal at 11:00

February 4th – Weekend activity – TBD

January 9, 2016

Happy New Year!

It was good to see everyone’s smiling faces this morning!  I hope everyone enjoyed the break.  The students seem like they are ready to get back into the swing of things.  The Planet Fitness group rocked it this morning – we even received compliments from the staff about what a great job the students are doing!  It was awesome to hear that Tori went on her own over the break!  Way to go Tori!

This month the students will be responsible for completing their own weekend activity.  Information will be coming home this week (I’m shooting for today, but sometimes situations arise and I cant get to everything I had hoped to).  Students will have until the February activity – February 4th – to complete the January assignment.

Upcoming dates:

January 13 – DIA

January 16 – No School MLK

January 18 – Late Start

January 27 – 1/2 Day

UPDATE – Information is also coming home today regarding registering your son/daughter with the Dearborn Police and Fire Departments.  They have created a Special Needs 911 Registry for Dearborn residents with disabilities, chronic conditions or other special healthcare needs.  This allows First Responders to appropriately plan, prepare for and respond to the needs of the community.

Hello!

Just a few reminders this week:

  1.  Kerby’s Koney Island – Please bring your money and menu on Tuesday Dec 20th.  Some students have brought money in early, but we are not taking it until the day of the activity.
  2. Bowling – Please send $6 by Wednesday Dec 21st.  We will not likely be able to make change, so please send exact amount or we will consider it a tip!  (Kidding!)
  3. Late Start – Wednesday Dec 21
  4. Bowling Party – Friday Dec 23
  5. Mid-Winter Break Dec 26-Jan 6
  6. First Day Back – Jan 9

Changes to the Schedule

Since I was sick last week, and with the snow day on Monday, menu’s did not go out for for Kerby’s.  Therefore, both this weeks group, and next weeks group,  will go on Tuesday December 20th.    The following students will be going:  Yasmeen, Zeinab, Sarah, Hiba, Malak, Jamie, Mo, Wassim, Munasar and Fowzi.  Menu’s are going home today.  Please do not send any money in until the day of the activity.  Thank you!

Jan 9 – First Day Back!

Just a few reminders this week:

Tomorrow will be our second movie Friday in December.  Last week, we provided popcorn, this week, they are able to bring a small, bagged snack if they wish.   Chips, pretzels, etc.  Please no cupcakes, brownies, etc. as those things tend to make a bigger mess and we are not eating over tables.

Our bowling and pizza party on December 23rd will be $6 per student.  We had such a great fundraiser, we will be paying for the remainder with our profits.  Please send in money no later than December 21st.

Finally, please, please,  please,  make sure your sons and daughters are taking a shower, washing their clothes, wearing different clothes and wearing deodorant on a daily basis.  This is very important as they become adults.  Our room is very small, and it is apparent some students are not following the above guidelines.  We discuss it almost daily, but we need help from the parents as well.  Some students wear the same outfit 5 times a week, which is fine if it is being washed in between each wearing, but unfortunately, that’s not the case.  Sadly,  when visitors come into the room, they comment on the smell.  Please don’t let that be your son/daughter.

Thank you!

December 1st, 2016

Who’s counting down to the break?  WE ARE!  Only sixteen school days left until we are out for winter break!  While we are all excited, this is also the time of year when staff and students start getting sick.  There does seem to be a bug going around the room.  This is just a friendly reminder to keep students home when they are not feeling well, and that they must stay home 24 hours after the last signs of vomiting, diarrhea or a fever.

Tomorrow, and for the next two Friday’s after, students may bring in ONE Christmas movie and students will vote on which one they want to watch in the afternoon.  This is just something special we like to do during this time of year as lessons are wrapping up and we hold off introducing new curriculum until after the break.  It’s also a nice reward for students who work so hard during the week.  The movie dates will be:  Dec 2, Dec 9, and Dec 16

On December 23, we will be going bowling and having a pizza party at Ford Lanes.  Cost is typically around $10 per person which includes two pieces of pizza, pop, shoes, and two games of bowling.  It is a great time that we always enjoy!  When I made the reservation, they were not able to give me a price because their field trip forms were missing.  Once the price is confirmed I will put the information on the blog.

One more thing!  Back to cold and flu season, if each student could bring in a box of kleenex to be shared with the room that would be very helpful.  We do not have a supply here at Hype other than the paper towel in the restroom which is not very soft!  We do get some tissue from Howe, but it is paper thin and we are going through it like you wouldn’t believe.  Thank you in advance!

Have a great weekend!

Reminders ~ Nov 29, 2016

Just a few reminders as we get used to being back in school again after the nice Thanksgiving Break ~

  1.  Kerby’s Koney Island – Menu’s will come home prior to the students attending so that you can plan and budget.  Some students are only bringing in $5 which isn’t quite enough to cover their meal and a tip.  We will walk to 5 Below afterwards so if the students would like to bring extra spending money they can.  Please do not send money in until the day they are scheduled to go, as marked in their planner.
  2.   Dress Code – When students are scheduled to work, they must wear work appropriate clothes.  Exercise clothes are not appropriate unless they are going to Planet Fitness, in which case, they must still bring the appropriate clothes to change into after they are done working out.  Work appropriate clothes:  jeans, khakis, dress with leggings, shirt with collar or a clean, neat t-shirt, and closed toed shoes.  Clothes that are not appropriate for work:  spandex leggings for working out, shorts, tank tops, clothes with excessive stains, sandals, flip flops or high heels.   Thank you for your support and understanding!

We had a great time at the DIA today!  Hope you are enjoying seeing pictures of our activities on our Facebook Page.  If you have not seen them, be sure to check them out.  Please note:  Students do not need spending money for the DIA.  We do not go to the gift shop and we cannot purchase items from the café – the students just don’t have enough time to consume them.  They end up having to throw away whatever they’ve purchased because they cannot carry food/drinks through the museum.  It’s much easier if students do not take money to spend.

Tomorrow is our second weekend activity at Zap Zone.  We are looking forward to a great time!  Reminders were sent home yesterday with the students who R.S.V.P’d.   Due to the busy time of year and scheduling conflicts, there will not be an activity in December.  Beginning in  January, students will plan their own activity every other month.  (January, March, May).  More  information will be provided closer to the Christmas break.

Please remember we have a short week next week – Monday and Tuesday only!

Have a great weekend!

Happy Veteran’s Day!  Thank you to those of you who have served in the military, past, present and even future!

Next week we return to our regular routine and we will have our 2nd Weekend Activity.  We will be going to Zap Zone in Taylor.  The students may choose Glow Golf OR Laser Tag, (I learned last year that there is not enough time to do both because Glow Golf takes a loooong time!).  The students will also be able to play video games if they wish.  We will be having pizza and pop, and there is an optional salad bar as well.  It’s a really good salad bar too!  🙂   There will be a “survey” coming home today to help us plan.  Please disregard that it says “Weekend Activity #4” at the top.   I used the same form from last year and missed changing the activity number.  At any rate, please send those back by Monday, November 14th.  Please note:   If you son/daughter experiences seizures caused by flashing lights, loud sounds and/or commotion, this may be an activity you wish to skip.  Please use your best judgement.

Nov 18 – DIA Fieldtrip

Nov 23 – No school – Conference Release Day

Nov 24-25 – No School – Thanksgiving Break
