No School for Hype 3/10/17

Good Morning,

Howe School remains without power today and will be closed.  As we are an extension of Howe, that includes the Hype students as well.  Transportation has been notified and will not run, but just in case, please do not put your son/daughter on a bus to school or drop them off.  There will not be anyone at Howe or Hype today.

Hope everyone is safe and warm!

Hello!

Just a quick note to let you know we did not have enough interest in the Detroit Tigers Game to schedule a trip!  We will try again in the future!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!  Looking forward to seeing our athletes at the Spaghetti Dinner on Sunday!

Hello!

I will be sending home a flyer today about an Educational Workshop that will be taking place at Jo Brighton on May 11, 2017.  It is called “Life Planning for a Child with Special Needs”.   It will specifically focus on planning for an adult family member with special needs.    Topics will include:

  • What will happen to my loved one when I am no longer here?
  • What is a Special needs Trust and what type should I create?
  • How does the ABLE Act work?
  • Why Wills and Trusts alone may not work
  • What are the government benefits and can and will they be enough?
  • What are my child’s future housing options?
  • How well do your child’s future caregivers know your Estate Plans?
  • Have you provided instructions for your child’s future advocate?
  • Is your child’s vital medical information, key resource providers, likes and dislikes, routines and interests and other critical information compiled in one location for future caregivers?

Also, the response for the Tiger’s Game has been a little less than we anticipated.  If we don’t get enough people to attend we will cancel the event.  We were hoping for a good turn out,  but we understand that the weather will be getting nicer and people start making plans to go away for the weekend, etc.  Please send your RSVP in by Friday so we know how to plan!  Thank you!

Also just a reminder, we are a Fragrance Free Classroom!  Some of our girls have started brining in perfume/body spray again.  We have several people who are allergic to fragrances and have severe reactions.  We reminded the students yesterday not to wear anything they have to “spray on”, but this also includes the antibacterial gel as they can be SO strong.  Thank you for your understanding!

February 28, 2017

It’s the last day of February!  Time is going to fly!  We are already working on the calendar through the end of the school year. Here are the updates:

Kerby’s Koney Island – Groups scheduled for Target in March will be going to Kerby’s Koney Island beginng March 7th and ending March 28th.  Menu’s will be sent home prior to their scheduled day.

SAVE THE DATE!  Our last “Weekend Activity” will be a Tiger’s Game on June 3rd.   Game time is 4:10 against Chicago White Sox.     This will be a “Family Day” and all family members are welcome!  (Students must be accompanied by at least one chaperone 18 years old or older, who is able to take full responsibility for the student.)  We need to know how many people are interested to know whether we can get group pricing or not.  Please fill out and return the R.S.V.P that comes home today so we have an estimate of how many to plan on.  (This in no way commits you to attending.)

Student Supplies – We’ve noticed since the break, students are missing pencils, colored pencils, glue sticks and scissors.  Please double check your student’s supplies and replenish if necessary.  Thank you!

February 17, 2017

We made it to another break!  Looks like great weather too!  This is always my favorite break because it’s not attached to any holiday,  just time off for some R&R!   Here’s what’s going on when we come back:

Planet Fitness – Students are now required to have their membership tag in order to attend Planet Fitness.  Most students keep them on a lanyard so they can wear them around their neck, with their locker key.  We are starting to create a traffic jam at the front desk because of forgotten membership tags.

March Dates:

March 3 – Sheet orders and payments due

March 15 – Late Start

March 15 – First Aid Presentation with Nurse Sharon

March 17 – DIA

March 31 – DIY Weekend activity assignments due (Coming home today!)

April 3-7 Spring Break

Enjoy!

February 10, 2017

Wishing everyone a great time at “A Night to Shine” tonight!   Please make sure you send us some photos so we can see what a great time you had, and how beautiful you all looked!

On Tuesday, (Valentine’s Day)  we will be purchasing lunch for the class from Kabob Inn.    We will be providing a Chicken Schwarma Sandwich and Fattoush for the class.  Please bring your own beverage. (School rules still apply – no pop) Students may also bring Valentines Day cards and/or candy if they wish – but it is optional.

We are having our second sheet fundraiser this month!  We’ve had many requests for sheets and we are able to do so much for our class with the profits.  An order form will be coming home on Monday.  Please use one order form for each customer so that we can keep everything organized.  If you need copies we will be happy to provide them if you let us know.

As a reminder, next week is our last week of school before the mid-winter break!  School will be closed Feb 20-24!

Have a great weekend!

February 2, 2017

Hello!

Information is coming home today about our Weekend Activity scheduled for Saturday, February 4th.  We will be going to see “Monster Trucks” at Southland Cinemark Theaters.  Please RSVP by tomorrow, so we can plan accordingly.  (Sorry we could’t get details to you sooner, but the theaters do not release their movie times until later in the week).  Students will be on their own again in March.

Electronics – students have always been welcome to bring phones/ipads/ipods, etc. to class as long as they are using them at the appropriate times.  They are doing a great job with that – however, we’ve had an issue with charging phones during class time.  We haven been tripping over the cords, phones are crashing to the floor, students are preoccupied with where their device is, etc.  We have decided that while electronics are still permitted, charging them during school hours is not.  Students should come to school with their electronics fully charged to last them throughout the day.  If they aren’t staying charged throughout the day, they are using them too much!

Valentines Day Update – Recently, we learned that the students are receiving nothing but praises from Burlington Coat Factory, The Henry and Planet Fitness.  We are so proud of them!  To celebrate this great news, we will be providing lunch on Valentines Day!  Details will follow at a later date.

Also noteworthy, we had a record number of students qualify for the Healthy Lunch and Walking Club prize drawings in January.  Those that qualified for the Healthy Lunch Program with 52 points or higher were:  Sabrina, Fowzi, Nejwa, Tori, Sarah, Mo, Hiba, Susie, Ahlam, and Ali S.   (Tori was the winner)    Those that qualified for the Walking Club Prize with 136 laps or more were:  Sarah, Ahlam, Malak, Sabrina, Susie, Hiba, Hadi, Ali J., and Tori (Ahlam was the winner!) Congratulations, and keep up the great work!  We are so proud of you all!!!   We are currently putting together some ideas and samples of the types of things students are bringing for lunch to give ideas to those of you who need them!  Stay tuned!

Finally,  Ms. Sue, one of our classroom parapro’s, has taken a position at another building and will not be returning to our class.  We anticipate welcoming a new parprofessional in the near future.

January 30, 2017

Hello!  A few things have come up this week so here’s an extra edition of the blog!

Valentines Day – We do not typically have a party – but a few students have asked whether they can bring something in to pass around to the class.  We will give the students time at the end of the day to pass out cards and/or goodies if they choose.   While we try to keep everything age appropriate – we are not party poopers either!  🙂

Fairlane Mall – Due to transportation changes last week – one group missed out on Fairlane Mall.  That group may attend this week along  with the scheduled group if they would like.  Students who missed were Fowzi, Ali J., Yaser and Andrew.  Scheduled this week:  Tori, Ahlam, Nejwa, Susie and Sabrina.

Politics – Politics are a sensitive issue, especially lately.  We do not talk about politics during the school day at all.  However, we’ve had a few students very upset about current issues. Please encourage your son/daughter to keep talk of politics at home.   If you know your son/daughter is easily angered or upset by these topics, please try to keep your conversations out of ear shot of the students so that it does not affect them at school.  Sometimes the students don’t even understand what is going on but they will mirror their parents emotions that are witnessed at home.  Thank you.

January 27, 2017

Hello!  We hope everyone is enjoying their afternoon off!  We wanted to clarify that we will have a full day of school on Monday, January 30th.   Our program is unique in that we are post-secondary, but we follow the elementary calendar.   We will not have transportation to job sites and CBI sites on Monday since the buses will be in use to take those that do have a half day home.

We are excited to hear of all the plans the students have with their friends this weekend, and so proud of the students who have already participated in a weekend activity with a friend.  Next month we will go to the movies (details are still being worked out) and they will be on their own for March.  Everyone is doing a great job!!!   The activities can be as simple or elaborate as you want.  Sometimes the best times are just hanging out at a friends house!

February Dates:

February 4 – Weekend Activity – Movie – TBD

February 15 – Late Start

February 20-24 – Mid-Winter Break

Announcement 1/24/17
